Potholes

Ok, genuine question. Why are the roads in such stty conditions? I know the ice gets in cracks expands blah blah. But do other countries with same/worse weather have this issue or is it just us?


I ask because I've noticed these last few days that my route to work has now become an absolute minefield as if it wasn't bad enough already, and on my way to my gf's there's a pothole of ~a foot deep on a fairly recently surfaced piece of road (within a few months)
