Right 9 points now, what can I get to help me drive legally?
Discussion
I picked up 6 points for failing to supply driver identity, phoned, wrote, explained, got pictures, not clear who was driving, went to court and got tied up in the minutia of detail, tried to fight it, lost, 6 points, fair enough.
a month ago driving new car down to dorset, about to get on motorway get stung by police speed trap just before the speed limit change, 1 mph over being offered speed awareness course, bang 3 points, my fault, fair enough.
Now I have 2 years of infraction free driving and want to get something to help me not now but in 18 months when I will end up relaxing as opposed to the scared like a rabbit look I have now, and can't afford to make a mistake.
I would like something that monitors my speed and warns me when I am above the speed limit, I have been looking at road angels but not sure if they don;t just tell you when your over the limit near a camera ( essentially what my sat nav does ). I would like something that keeps me in check all the time. Can I buy something or add some software for my garmin 205 ?
One final question does a failing to supply driver details ( ms90 ) points start from the conviction or when the offence occurred? ( there is a 8 months difference between them) ?
Cheers

Yeap brain, yeap self control, nope I don;t believe I won;t go over the speed limit in the next 2 years, doubt many people can say different. Dont get me wrong, i am not looking for soemthign to help me rant to c0ck off my car, just help me not to go over the speedlimti at all. I was driving a 2.0 auto omega estate and have now moved to a 1.8 vectra, not exactly speed merchants !
Difference with me is I will lose my license if I do it now, most others won;t so would like to have something else as well.
I do have cruise but not that helpful on short 30mph roads, loads near me that are dual carridgeways
Edited to add, I am 31, have had a clean license since I was 17, all points are my fault but that is the scarey thing, I wasn't trying to speed or rag the car, so need to be very careful and want to be proactive

I mentioned this on here before, but get a tomtom go LIVE or a road angel. They update on the move and usualy tell you about fixed and VAN cameras. the van or mobile cameras are updated by the community of users who can press a button when they see an active one and this broadcasts to all users in the area for 2 hours.
I had 9 points in 2005, I have now been conviction free for 5 years.
The downside is that you have to pay a subscription and you can't guarantee that it will catch all mobiles especialy on minor B roads.
PS I dont work for road angel or tomtom, just a high mileage driver trying to earn a crust.
Cheers grgrgray, does it tell you if you over the limit on any road or just ones with cameras on it ? I don;t want to speed anywhere not just round cameras.I had 9 points in 2005, I have now been conviction free for 5 years.

Do you have a local IAM group?
With 9 points you don't just need to be careful, you need to be mother theresa personified behind the wheel. Whilst a gadget might help "remind" you of the speed limit, always handy, I would suggest (and I'm not trying to be rude or get your back up here) that if you've been caught twice (and tried to 'play the game' once and lost out) that there may be something in your manner of driving that needs adjustment.
It could be something as simple as observation - Seeing the limits and sticking to them. Seeing cameras/coppers is equally as important.
It could be impatience or frustration. I doubt there's a driver in the country who doesn't speed ever, and simply saying "I'm not going to exceed the speed limit for two years" is all very well, but practically impossible if you don't arm yourself with the skills to stick to it.
After all, can you guarantee that you WON'T wake up 30 mins late for work one morning when your boss is already pissed off with you, and just press on that little bit to get there ASAP?
If you're in the south east and willing to travel, I'd be happy to "have a look" at your driving tosee where your energies may be best spent (NOTE -I am NOT an instructor/assessor, but I am a police driver and I've helped a few younger memebers of my family sort their driving out before they killed themselves) but I would recommend some programme of "advanced" driving tuition to address the heart of the problem, not the symptoms.
No not annoyed at all buddy, appreciate it, I am in Uxbridge in west london. I am fully aware that I am the problem and I was thinking a noisy beeping machine to tell me when i am over the speed limit would help along with me trying as hard as I can. With 9 points you don't just need to be careful, you need to be mother theresa personified behind the wheel. Sorry, but if you can't take any notice of your speedo, due to lack of self control, what makes you think you can take any notice of a gizmo on the dash?
No need to be sorry. I can't see my speedo when i am looking at the road, I don;t have a heads up display. I now drive with my head down alot checking and double checking, I can;t risk it.
When you come to a speed camera do you look at the speedo and not at the road to check you speed even for a split second ? Thats what I have to do literally all the time I am driving, i can't slip up once not even for a short amount of time for the next 2 years.
I figured a noisy audio signal of the speed limit along with better more considered driving would help me drive heads up, safely and stay in the speed limit.
LOL, I had a auto now have a slow box, it isn't the acceleration I am scared of ( I have ridden motorbikes for years, none of the points are for bikes )it is that drive down a 30mph road that opens up to a 50mph, it starts widening, you thinking of something else check your speed, your needle is just over the thirty but still there, carry on, slight downhill slope, your in a high gear for the long road, and before you know it your doing 36, very easily done and easy to correct but I can't/ don;t want to go over.

It highlights your speed in red if your over the limit for the road. also keeps you under the average speed cams on motorways, roadworks etc..The speed limits are based on the maps and are sometimes out of date but mainly accurate.
So it knows the speed limit on all roads, not just ones with cameras ?Can you get it to make a sound/alarm if you're over the limit ?
What model do you have gary ?
Cheers bud

What an embarrassing thread. "I can't drive so is there a device that can do it for me?" Yes, it's called a bus.
Only a matter of time before Tampon gets banned, so that'll be one less crap driver on the road. \0/
Ironic we are all members of a site where speed matters !
I will lay 50 quid cash that both of you would go over the speed limit by 10% once on a journey of 45 mins, even trying. If you would like to earn it give me a shout.
Edited to add smilies

I have to say that the suggestions of anything vaguely "classic" are heading in the right direction in my opinion. Not only do older cars tend to have a fecking huge speedo in plain view but the lack of a 5th or even 4th gear means you're really sensitive to the speed you're doing. An old Moggie can be plenty reliable enough too and they are comfortable. Get used to being part of the traffic with everyone sailing by, no tooting just people overtaking, sometimes even with a smile
You'll blend in to the scenery as far as the fuzz are concerned. You'll find it's much harder to speed by mistake because it takes an age to build up to even 30 mph and as a bonus your insurance shouldn't be crippling, even with 9 points...
Think classic car, you know it makes sense
I have to drive to the south of france and paris a few times this year so bought the vectra as it sits nice and quiet on the motorway and has cruise and was cheapy cheap, a oldie just isn't going to cut it for 600 miles in a day with 40 mpg to boot. You'll blend in to the scenery as far as the fuzz are concerned. Yeah the gear selected is what did me, I was in fifth trying to save that bloody expensive fuel, and it just crept up, you don;t hear the change in speed nor feel it in that gear. One of the things I am now doing holding a lower gear.

e36 bmw with obc?
Has the option to set it so it beeps when over a limit set by you or alternatively an audi a3,which again you can set the dash computer limit to beep/flash up over a preset limit.
I think you set the limit for one road at a time ( normally the motorway ) with that system( I might be wrong ), trying to find something for a 100 quid or so rather than a new car.Has the option to set it so it beeps when over a limit set by you or alternatively an audi a3,which again you can set the dash computer limit to beep/flash up over a preset limit.
Had some good news, the original 6 points runs out next july so not as long as i thought it was, will be spending a couple of months out of the country so looks like it is down to 13 months of driving miss daisy.

Just pass on any further speeding tickets onto the other half/brother/etc and if stopped for something giving points, give someone elses details (having made sure they are a named driver to make it plausible, maybe even some fake ID). If the worst comes to the worst, at least you'll be banged up instead of disqualified.
Ahhhh, the old go big or go home life mantra.I like it, but don;t think the future wife is going to feel that happy about it.

Just get an underpowered crap box then. Fiat Uno with a FIRE engine, or a Pug 106 diesel thing etc. Yea it won't be the most luxurious ride, but if it's gonna save my licence it would be my choice. Speed detection technology isn't guaranteed (especially as it's easy to ignore), but a crap box will solve your lead foot problem.
Relying on a machine is as much use a relying on a electronic device, I personally need to not go over.Bear in mind both cases I got points for were both under 40mph, I don;t speed on the motorway, I cruise at 70mph, one road was 2 miles long and I got pinged 300metres before a limit increase to 60 and one was in the country coming out of a nsl and slowing down, just not fast enough, I would have done the same thing in a uno, I wasn't ragging it. That is the bit that worries me, i really don;t think I have a lead foot, I ride motorbikes, scooters, vans and trucks, I drive around the speed limit like most, checking, as long as the needle was nearer to the 30 than the 40 I was happy, but I have been caught twice, one time I messed up with the court procedures and got slapped with a extra 3 points. With out that I would feel fine carrying 6 points, down to 3 in about a year, but I have it and now worried I will get stung again, so now have to drive with the needle under the 30 for a year. I need to change my driving and want something to aid me.
At least the road angel thing will warn me if I creep above the uno/106 won;t do anything but be a uncomfortable with just as much chance of doing what I have done before

Done. Let me know how I can prove this (at no expense to me) and I'll undertake five of those journeys every day and bill you monthly. If I exceed the speed limit, which I do on most journeys (intentionally) then I'm observant and make sure I don't get caught, or crash. In half a million miles I've been caught once, and that was after doing 135 in a 60 which wasn't something that crept up on me (although the cop car was, I had to slow down to let him catch up).
Ahh so you exceed the limit but your special because you ment to? I didn't crash, didn't get done for dangerous driving, and you got caught doing 135 in a 60, 75mph over the limit ? well I've got 9 points you been banned and you ripping me for being a bad driver ? unless you going to tell us you didn't get banned or convicted for dangerous driving ( 36 mph over the limit and it is a auto ban from 1mth to 12mth, infact I think that speed they would have locked you up, many cases of people being spent to jail from 4 weeks to 3 months for 130+)I am serious, you want £50 we can go in your car I will pay the petrol so your "not out of pocket" and I will watch gps with your speed, you make it 45 mins never going 10% over the speed limit once I will hand over £50, you do, you owe me £50.
You have to agree to being filmed though so we can post up what actually happened this could be a cracking story for Black Tie and Pie.

Wrong again monkey boy!
I'm a truck-driver, my licence is vocational therefore no licence = no job, no car & no house.
Wrong again ? what was I wrong about the first time ? let alone the second time ?I'm a truck-driver, my licence is vocational therefore no licence = no job, no car & no house.
Think you should re-read what I said, think you might be confusing me with someone else.

Just try and look at your surroundings more.
I drive my cars fast, they are quite fast cars. I have little regard for speed limits prefering to drive to the conditions, except 30's which I obay to a good degree (try to keep under 35 even when surrounding say more would be safe).
I got caught speeding when I was 17 a few weeks after passing my test in the early 90's, its been the only time - it taught me to keep my eyes peeled.
