I bought my 1st car in the summer 1996 (a lovely 1985 C plated Fiesta) and remember paying around 75 pence per litre for petrol.

That's my baseline, I cannot remember it being cheaper than that.

How cheap was it for you?

Circa 48p a gallon!
A gallon being 4.5 litres, you paid 10.5 pence/ litre? When was that?

Pump prices are certainly heading north, but adjusted for inflation and other factors, is fuel cheaper, similarly priced or more expensive than in the past?

I also passed my test in 1996 and bought my first car. Petrol was 55.9 a litre then so 75p a litre is wrong for that year. Take a look at this: http://www.ukpia.com/files/pdf/unleaded-95-petrol-...
You're probably right mate. I have a st memory. It was probably circa 57p/ ltr that I paid, rather than 75p.

I would love to see the litres increasing faster than the pounds again, do you think we'll ever see those days again?
Nothing would please me more. Cannot see it happening though. Inflation only seems to go in one direction. The wrong direction.
