I have bought an early 3.6 997.1 with 190k miles on it 3 month ago.
It was the cheapest running and manual 997 pretty much on the entire internet (europe and north america).
It had a new engine installed by Porsche with the latest IMS design 90k miles ago. Every suspension part has been redone at least once, along with many other parts. Inches thick staples of recipes proving the work carried out.

Almost 4k miles and an oil inspection later, it drives superbly. It has not lost one drop of oil in those 4k miles.
I have driven younger (997), much more expensive 60k miles cars (996 and 997) that felt much more worn out.
I'm not afraid once resale time comes (if ever), because although 90% of buyers won't even look at it due to mileage, I know there are similar minded people out there.

ppbb's planned maintenance schedule based on lifed components is pretty extensive and instructive. A one-off though.
Neither am I, not sure where you drew that from my comments. My point is, a high mileage car may be less 'baggy' than a low mileage one, it's about how it has been driven and looked after.

It's foolish to not buy an old 911 on condition. Mileage is a small part of that.

I have a car for sale at the moment- 180,000 miles. It's the second best example of its type in the U.K.- the best example lives in a heated garage and drives to shows and back. Mine is parked outside on the drive.

Not a single phone call or email- which I suspect is due to the miles.

Price is high, but less than I spent on the engine alone, which has been fully built, new turbo, injectors, manifold, rods, piston rings, valves, valve job etc etc.

Mileage in the U.K. Is put ahead of condition by the vast majority.

I think we agree, almost... I think mileage is fairly significant when it's at the extremes though, and going back to the car cited, we don't really have any idea what condition it's in, apart from it had a Hartech rebuild. My very small sample (2 cars) is a bit too small to be representative smile

I'm not averse to high mileage cars - my DD is on 160k & my track car is now on 237k...it was cheap, very cheap (almost a set of KWv3 shocks with a free car smile ) so i thought it was worth a punt & I was fascinated to see if i could make it work. Over the past 4 years.a lot of the original components have needed replacing as they have failed OK it's been used hard but nonetheless things have a finite life.

Indeed - just like a lot of people read The Sun... Both are idiotic.

Thankfully, the educated ones then get a decent deal.

Worst car I ever bought was a 928 in 2009. It had just 62k miles on it and came with a fully stamped book.

Within the first 12 months the steering rack failed, followed by the clutch, followed by the head gaskets, then the gearbox required a rebuild. Added to this were multiple electrical components failing, culminating in the need for a new ECU unit. It was hardly ever on the road in my ownership and I couldn't wait to see the back of it.

In my experience of this, and other cars I have owned, the sixty to eighty thousand miles bracket can be very risky. Cars in this bracket command a strong price but are at a point when some of the major components are about to expire. Whereas a car that has been maintained through this period and into the 90k+ bracket would have had most of these components replaced.

And this cycle is repeated.

Agree 100%, its also why the sweet spot for me is cars with around 20k miles on them that are about 7 years old, maximises depreciation against wear and tear and overall condition. Bought a couple of our hatchback runarounds like that, only needed fuel tyres and services on both. Got burned by my Megane R26, wonderful drivers car but spent £3.5k on the thing over 2 years, you can guess how many miles she had when I bought her, you guessed right, 63k.

60k is the first cycle for sure but you can never be guaranteed when the next cycles have worked through and to what extent they have been completed. Sometimes you can get lucky and buy a car that someone else spent a lot on, got fed up and moved on hoping you don't get a lemon. Bizarrely my P38 Range Rover was such a car, a vehicle with a terrible rep but I have taken her 7 years later onto 170k largely trouble free miles, the previous owner spent £3k over 18 months on repairs, got fed up and traded her in for a Vectra! I wonder how you're 928 turned out for the next owner?

Of course the problem we have here is the ideal buying logic could just about be applied to Gen II Cayman/Box but can't work any more for the 996 due to age hence the debate.
