If engines are used hard to 9,000 rpm and not re-built they all can go wrong ( had a flaming blow up or two with Mezger engines ) ...
This is why race engines are hour limited ...

The unstressed boggo engined GT4, and at close to half the price, is quite a draw and do think some 991 GT3 owners will defect to the "better" chassis/transmission.
"Better"...? No, just no!

Different, yes.

Cayman, even a GT4, whilst doubtless a clever package, will never be a substitute for the GT3.

there is no doubt (IMO) it is going to affect values as these cars head toward the 9 year mark
There was no doubt values were affected as these cars approached 1 year old too........they rose by up to c50 percent!

Despite the engine issues.

Part of the reason for basing the new engine on the 9A1 was ease of build on the production line. Can't see rebuilding these GT3 engines being problematic. Porsche print out a lovely step-by-step guide for the 9A1.

In the UK, anywhere else?

Too many customers chasing what was thought was too few goods, and attraction of RHD for export ( e.g 4.0RS). Normal service being resumed slowly, and will be resumed instantly if a Gen 2 na GT3 is announced - uncertainty about that is propping up prices.

Hahaha. Well, I might want a buyer for mine. I am test driving a 488GTB next week sometime. They have a LHD one coming in for show and some demos. He said if I want a demo I can, be interesting.

This latest top end problem was an unforeseen jab so Germany will want the full engine back complete asap.. replacement engine will be hot shoed to keep customer happy... hence the 2nd replacement, which really should be across the board! the top end jab also coincides with the RS being pulled back to 8750rpm redline.

This engine (4.0 RS version) IS going into completion next season (2016) for the 991R customer race car. Not sure what the 2016 Cup will be running yet?.....

Careful.......next you will be accused of:

Blantantly attempting to deprive the 'true Porsche enthusiasts' scratchchin of a car.

and/or

Favouritism...... because you had a gen 1you will be guaranteed a gen 2.

biggrin:

It's interesting, as although the 488 is an obvious competitor to the GT3, I'm sure that if I owned one it would get much less use than my GT3 does, as I'd feel much more conspicuous (rightly or wrongly) driving it around, particularly for more mundane tasks.

It would be nice to be able to afford to have one in the garage though!!

Having run a 458 last summer I found it attracted too much attention (and it was a relatively low key colour Grigio Titanium). Also found it too wide for typical b road blasts compared to the typical 'chuckability' of 911s. Fantastic thing though although I would go guaranteed future classic Speciale rather than 488 'turbine'. thumbup

In the Car magazine article Preuninger claims the 8800 red line is not because the engine can't take it but because the power drops off quickly at higher revs due to the longer stroke, is this BS ?

He then goes on to list the differences GT3 to RS which on paper do make it seem like a much more elaborate race worthy engine certainly has a lot more changes than Mezger 3s to RSs which went before.

we shared a lot of parts between GT3 and RS, not in this case. There’s a different crankshaft, the material is only used on the 919 racecar – a highly, highly clean metal that is melted and solidified several times to get it as pure as possible, and more durable. It’s steel, but a very special like Star Trek steel. It’s a horrendous expensive part, but it works and that’s how it should be. We’ve got different con-rods, different pistons, different camshafts, different cam springs, different oil system – so we touched a lot of internal parts.
