Apologies if this has been posted already, but it appears the Cat C Zanzibar is now on eBay.

How much is it for an IMS job these days? At a decent ish indy (RPM near Harrogate seems closest to me)
I assume other jobs can be tagged on at the time? Ie, Rms? And then clutch?
Just wondering what to budget on top of a 996 C4S for covering off the main “common” fault (appreciate there are tons of other jobs but most just common for any older car)

I had a brief look at this. I actually went to have a closer look at the silver aero kit car, which I was interested in. It was a useful exercise to see what your money gets. Looks like the same dealer has it back and its 28 again ... for now

I'm just guessing hereI assume other jobs can be tagged on at the time? Ie, Rms? And then clutch?

It's basically behind the clutch so the gearbox needs to come out as if changing the clutch. Then the clutch and flywheel are removed. Then you can access the bearing. It's probably pointless removing to inspect and then refitting as you might as well fit new. I'd guess the bearing is cheap unless buying some fancy oil fed upgraded version. Main expense will be labour. I think about 8 hours or if paying 100 / hour then 800 quid should cover it. In that ball park.
Obviously if also replacing the clutch and flywheel they're probably around 3 or 400 quid for the clutch and 6 or 700 for the flywheel - sometimes you dont need a new flywheel.
Getting new brake pipes over the gearbox is a good idea while the box is out. Especially if car is knocking on for 20 years old.
Gearbox mount at the end of the box is probably cheap as chips too. I'd guess 50 quid. Old can be pressed out and new pressed in.

Why are you replacing the IMS? I assume other jobs can be tagged on at the time? Ie, Rms? And then clutch?

I don’t know of a car that’s suffered a failure in recent years.

I’m perhaps confusing things here, but I thought IMS was the big issue on these engines? (3.6?)
Then weepy RMS/clutch contamination?
Or are all these just rarities?
Big issue with the 3.6 is bore score. No fix for that outside of a rebuild. IMS is a bigger issue on the 3.6 than the 3.4 and can be replaced as a service item. Then weepy RMS/clutch contamination?

You should insist on a bore scope if you're getting a 3.6 although lack of evidence doesn't mean it won't happen down the line at some point. A tick when idling and oil consumption is the tell tale outside of direct evidence via imaging.
RMS is a bit of a non issue unless it's pissing oil out of the bell housing, most major issues here will have been dealt with and you'll be lucky to find a 20 year old Porsche without the odd oil weep.
I did the IMS bearing inspection on my 996, wouldn't bother if it didn't need a clutch.
Gearbox off, new clutch and fly (sachs/luk)
New lemforder gearbox mount smashed in
New RMS to replace leaking one
Took IMS bearing cover off and span it, silky smooth. Whipped end seal off IMS bearing to increase oil volume.
Re-sealed IMS bearing cover as that was leaking more than the RMS
New brake line over gearbox - bent up some kunifer
All new clutch fork release arm pivot with 997 part (delete creaks)
Would only add a couple of hours to a clutch job, and its do-able on your driveway in the snow as I did.
IMS bearing as with poor castings is a non issue these days. 996 are well out of the "infant mortality" phase and well into the "wear out" phase of the bathtub curve.

How's about this then?!

Those seats, if genuine (no Porsche crest?) are worth a good chunk by themselves, interesting to see what the details are once the full advert goes up.
