Mine's a narrow body and I also don't really like the front bumper that much compared to an 'S' model with the turbo front bumper; I spoke to Ninemeister and they confirmed that I could fit a turbo front bumper to mine and also include air ducts. I went ahead and had this done and I now think the front end looks brilliant so maybe worth considering, have a look at my profile picture. Good Luck.
Checked out your profile picture: great modification, it looks fantastic. Liking the air ducts too... I think I'll wait until I tend to the few stone chips on the bumper, after this summer's use. I really do like the look, thanks for the suggestion. Do you mind if I ask how much it cost?

One other question about those air ducts, what do you lose in the process that was behind the original lenses? Thanks...

Positively the last question! Is your suspension lowered? Mine is slightly lowered, not sure if the S is also a bit lower like the turbo, so I'm just wondering if the S spoiler lowers the front end from standard, and if so whether I might have problems with speed bumps, curbs, etc... any thoughts appreciated... as you can tell, I'm liking the idea

As you kindly suggested the S front bumper/air scoop mods, I thought I'd offer a write up on the RSR mufflers I had fitted before I collected my 993 a few days ago. After the test drive, I was left a little underwhelmed by the noise: a bit too refined for my liking, compared to 911SCs and 964s I'd previously driven that had more of a bark to the engine note. So I spoke with Phil and he recommended the RSR mufflers, which is a modification to your existing mufflers not a replacement. You can google them for more info, but essentially it involves sending them off to Belgium for modification before refitting.

The engine note now sounds more throaty at idle and low speeds, and the noise level in the car at motorway speeds is louder on acceleration but on constant throttle still allows normal conversation without having to raise the voice. I've done a few motorway runs, and some A-road driving, as well as town driving. I'm really pleased with the difference, it's loud enough to put a smile on your face but still subtle so you don't look like you've pimped your ride, so to speak.

Just a thought... though perhaps you've already done this, or gone further?

Hi,
The mod I had done was to replace the complete front bumper with a new turbo front bumper which makes the front end look like a C2S/C4S; I also had the front fog lights replaced by the air ducts to improve the look further in my eyes. The cost isn't cheap and works out at roughly £1.6k to £2k which includes fitting & painting, but well worth it for me as I intend to keep the car long term.

My car had lowering springs fitted by a previous owner and with the new turbo bumper I have no problems with ground clearance or speed bumps.

I think you did the right thing by having the RSR mufflers; I had the Dansk sports silencers fitted but unfortunately, I find the sound slightly disappointing, not really deep/rumbly enough, but not bad.

Oh no, what have you done. frown

I absolutely love the look of that, its not often that you can better the original design of the car with add ons, but that suits so much better IMO than the original.

I'm gutted. Where the hell I am going to get the money for that ..... I've spent out on other 'upgrades' already.

I had all four callipers refurbed, new plates and a couple of the pipes redone and my brake pedal went from being very firm to being a bit softer with much more feel. Plus they look all shiny and new (they were black) and really lift the look of the car. Cost me £600, well worth it for me.

Yeah, sounds like a good idea Mario. BTW I absolutely love that colour combo. Looks amazing. Varioram manual?

Edited by chrisgaia on Sunday 30th March 15:47
Thanks smile She's a manual but pre-varioram, with the following tweaks/additions:

Bilstein PSS10s with Eibach springs at RS+10mm ride height all set up by Center Gravity
OMP strut brace
Hollowspoke turbo wheels
Callipers refurbed and repainted red
Turbo ducts/running lights replacing fog/running lights
Dial faces in white
Motorsound airbox
Carnewal RSR mufflers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HzC5cbTkcQ)
HIDs

This topic is where I was talking about what to do, piccies on page 3:

If I ever got mine resprayed, I'd seriously consider going that way. Think it would work quite nicely with the blue hood hood and interior. Only prob is then I'd have to change the colour of my callipers again tongue out

ETA: what colour is it exactly?

I'd love to get stuck in to the spoiler issue myself. What would I look for in the plugs (excuse my greeness!)?
Fitting a spoiler wall is easy; fixing the bearing yourself slightly less so, but very satisfying.

Ask for the plugs as the 12th plug behind the PAS pump is a b1tch to get at, and (allegedly) some garages miss changing it.... by accident.
Also you can look at how they are burning the mixture, same as any engine.

chrisgaia said:
  • Do you think £475 is high for a major? I thought it was good but maybe inc brake fluid would push it up.
Not necessarily, but you just have to find out what is included.

If you have done brakes before, changing the fluid is a great way to inspect all four calipers (see below). IME Motul RBF600 works very well in the 993 for road or track.

chrisgaia said:
  • Yeah I am negotiating price for the 'immediate stuff' like service, steering rack, spoiler, horns and battery, but can't really expect a perfect specimen (getting the advisory and longer term stuff done) for the reasonable asking price. The seller and the guy who PPI'd are discussing getting the work done between themselves which makes me a bit nervous.
I would be too.

chrisgaia said:
  • The seller is obviously trying to say that a leaking steering rack may be nothing but my best mate (who owns Classic Connection, Ringwood) said get it done. Is there a chance its no big deal?
To me that is the biggest issue, as doing a recon and refit on a steering rack is difficult to say the least.

chrisgaia said:
  • Front brake caliper plates lifting (Advisory). I did find the brakes a bit unresponsive but put it down to lack of use. Do 993 brakes usually require quite a shove?
993 brakes are really really good, but require much more involvement from you as they are not over-servo-assisted - unlike most modern brakes. This means you can modulate them precisely, but this might feel 'wooden' until you are used to them.

Plate caliper lift is something you can inspect yourself, and if not too far gone you can remedy immediately and slow down the future effect... if you can undo the torq bolts.

Otherwise as above get them completely redone by a specialist.

chrisgaia said:
  • 1 horn gone, he says and other on the way out. Presuming that's a dual horn then.
Well that can wait until you take the front PU off yourself for a clean/inspect of radiator/condensor.

chrisgaia said:
  • MOT don't know and battery I will take a pop at even though my mate said that was a really good price. How much is a battery?
Battery price is good IF it is for a good battery. Ask if that's a Bosch/Varta (same company) and which one, as they are warranted for 3 4 or 5 years. I fitted a Halfords Calcium in 2008, and it's still going very strong.

chrisgaia said:
  • 6 brake lights, I presume from central spoiler brake light. (advisory)
Again I would wait and see what else crops up.

chrisgaia said:
  • Rear bumper stays, heat shields and fixings need replacing (advisory)
Again I would wait and see what else crops up. I bet a high %age of 993s have no bumper stays. Some people argue that the very expensive under-rear-PU heat-shields are OTT. A better solution in any case is a professional heat-wrap on the exhaust itself.

The big rear shield on mine was perfect but had torn some of the lower fixing points out. I chose to use some oversized stainless-steel washers to re-fix. That was in 2009.

Congrats - I think you have done the right thing. I bow to OC's greater knowledge but a £500 or so full service by someone good will have you set on the right path and you'll know you'll have the right plugs, belts, oil etc and a proper 'to-do' list that you can prioritise.

What a day! I almost bought a totally different car! Aporscha, Oxon had an identical car but manual with 5000 less miles on for 23500 but my mate offered a trade deal at 22000. It would have been me really rolling the dice so I went for the tip. Better the devil you know... Maybe the tip box will be fine. I had a 997 turbo tip for the weekend once and it was fine using it in 'manual mode'. Is it that much slower really? Surely the steering wheel shift would make quite instant changes. I'm sure I read some racing driver saying tips are actually faster if you use them correctly...you've stopped reading haven't you??!!! wink

No, I read it through.

Sorry mate, but it reads like your stood outside the Church, your rather lovely, supportive but slightly dull future wife is five minutes away, and you are spending far too much time checking out the bridesmaid, who's hot, sexy, tempremental, and her sister.

Do you stand where you are and go through with it, or grab the sister and run for the hills?

Only you can decide. biggrin
