are 911's really that much 'better' than say a boxster ?

By better i am referring to more reliable - is the driving experience massively different? enough to spend the same money on a ten year older 911 rather than the newer entry level model

I haven't driven either so genuinely interested (as this very conversation came up at the weekend with a friend when i was mentioning a boxster s is on my radar for a weekend car when the S3 goes)

My budget is around £25k - ideally it would be the C4S but for that money, wouldn't a newer boxster be a better bet?

sorry for the thread highjack, just good timing OP smile

Well as you know, I did have a thread a while back about the Cayman S but for my budget I was scared off by the engine issues; seems to be a common theme going on here! laugh

A 911 has always been on the wish list though but I would consider a Cayster instead if I felt I was getting the better car for the money. I don't think at the price point I'm considering that would necessarily be the case.

I certainly wont disagree with the bore scope advice. I'd probably do it on any 996/7 tbh. The mechanic that just did my IMSB/RMS and clutch said he thought the main factor was actually the gearbox - tiptronics are (in his experience) far more likely to score due to more time in lower revs and (vast generalisation) they seem to be used for shorter trips. He had a tiptronic 3.8 in for a rebuild after scoring on cylinder 6 at 40k miles.

The debate continues. When are you doing your next review?

Tips pull away in second gear when warm which is thought to be why they bore score more than manuals. General advice is to select first before pulling away. Or buy a manual biggrin

While I'd technically be able to stretch to that, I don't really want to. It's just more than I'm comfortable paying at the moment for various reasons.

I've seen a few nice 996 cars for sale, upto £17k. It's just then the 3.4 vs 3.6 and the C2 vs C4 dilemma... I think maybe a 3.6 and go onto the Hartech plan.

I actually prefer the looks and significant torque increase of the 3.6 and at night you'll be very thankful for the (standard) Bi-Xenons, as the Mark 1s Halogens are truly dire.
Good post, but Bi-Xenons are not standard on the 3.6. They have projector lenses but halogen bulbs were standard.
Thanks for the clarification.

Hi J, I do indeed. It's a bit modded now (suspension, forged 17" min-offset Fuchs, GT3 front bumper and seats), but more than happy to do another day out. I could put the 18s back on for the comparison, if you preferred.

Cheers.

Great choice. I might be biased :-)

I’m about to get my first Porker. A 996 3.4 C2 with low mileage and tbh it’s arguably the first car I’ve been excited about owning since my 1979 308 GT4.

If you want a standard but well specced (M030 etc) C4 in the mix as a halfway house, let me know.

This is well worth a watch if you have doubts about the 996.

Well done - look forward to seeing pictures of it! If you haven't already - head over to www.911.uk.com - it has an active 996 forum.

That video has made everything worse, because now I'm thinking "early 996 C2 with a cable throttle...." laugh

Still prefer the looks of the later 3.6 and the extra power but the lighter weight and from the sounds of this thread, less chance of engine issues is definitely tempting. It does mean a slightly older car being put to daily use though.

Honestly this is a head scratcher. I need to hurry up and get the Subaru repaired and sold....

"Boggo 996 911s, are they actually any good?"

Yes, bloody brilliant.

(I owned mine as a stop-gap after owing a 996 turbo, and I loved it - the noise is fantastic, especially with some Dansk silencers)
