Hi Doc, thanks for the comment, my reference to bore scoring was based on the amount of 997-1s out there that have had rebuilds, Baz from Hartech would probably be a lot more qualified to comment with sregards to stats on bore scoring but they are very busy rebuilding 3.8 motors for numerous other reasons also such as timing chain / cylinder head failure and bottom end failure.

Either way this engine wasn't the best to be produced by Porsche IMHO

Thanks for all the replies folks, hope this thread is useful for others but much to my surprise I've had a change of tack and now looking at a 964.
Trigger for the change was my wife getting a small inheritance and quite a few drinks at classic Le Mans!

I think your (OPs) thought processes are very valid. I went for a very early 54 plate C2S with very good history and lowish mileage, plus a borescope check.

I've had to have the front coffin arms and bushes replaced, plus a few other small things done up until now. Like you, I put aside some cash and also invested in a warranty to cover engine failure. My warranty has a claim limit of £5000, which should cover more than half the cost of the rebuild if it goes.

I could never see why the Gen 2s were so much more expensive...they do have some notable improvements and updates, but they're certainly not double the fun to go with double the price. And my specialist told me they've already had Gen 2s and a Cayman DFI in for rebuilds due to bore scoring...although the IMS thing has now gone away, they're still prone to expensive failures.

As it happens (as I've just posted in another thread) mine conked out yesterday, and I suspect it might be IMS. I'm waiting for diagnostics to be done...oh the irony wink
