what is an 'early' 3.4 996?
Discussion
Before this gets onto values again, i think the summary was that we're all happy they remain cheap.
1. If you already have one it keeps major maintenance cost expectations under control ie rebuilds.
2. If you already have one and you're on here then its unlikely you're going to be selling any time soon.
3. If you're on here and in the market then the cheaper they stay the better!

Excluding wheels, I'm up to around £13k or so on mine. It's probably worth around that on a good day, so as long as the value keeps fairly close to the upkeep I'm happy. I t would need to be a really nice 3.4 to be around the £18k mark, or a really nice aero kitted car to be around the £20k price point

There's a growing view that an early 996 is an 18-20k car. You either pay this upfront, or buy cheaper and then do some work. I guess this is a good rule of thumb, but you might luck out.
Then there's the 2k a year running cost, which seems to have gained acceptance, although upgraditis blows this out of the water pretty fast!
There seems to be a steady supply of 3.4s at £13-14k, including from dealers. They might be £18-20k in future but not now. Then there's the 2k a year running cost, which seems to have gained acceptance, although upgraditis blows this out of the water pretty fast!
This one, for example, has been around for a little while at £14k

Does the 996 have the issue that vertically backed hatchbacks do, that being if you drive in the rain you need to constantly clear the rear screen? Or are they more like saloons where rear screen retains water when stationary but that quickly clears when underway. Certainly my 944 was more that latter than the former.
No hatchbacks / SUVs do that because they have a vertical back.996 self clears.

£20k would have to be the absolute top, no? If a fully Hartech'd C4S is £26k........
I paid £23k for a 2001 3.4 C2 manual with less than 30k on the clock from Mortimers in Billingshurst. I’ve spent £3k since but a lot of that was ego boosting. What’s it worth now? No idea. Don’t really care either as I’ve no intention of selling it ......ever...... well maybe just before I die. edc said:
You owners and prospective owners are starting to sound like the air cooled and GT owners of the recent past. Start talking about the mods and drives, tweaks and maintenance before you turn into the people you never aspired to be ??
Whoa steady on there chap! A few posts on pricing does not mean we've become the sandal and socks brigade edc said:
