I rmember watching Hoovies LS porsche engine later got ruined again? On the track... laugh
Doesn't the 996 suffer from starvation issues on track on long fast corners without a baffled sump? Which leads to the same result, 1 knackered motor
...which he replaced with a 996 Turbo, took to the track and... broke down - pishing coolant everywhere!

Great way to ruin a great car IMO.

The M96 is an utterly fantastic piece of machinery, keep it in fine fettle and it must be up there with the all time greats.

Sorry, the M96 is nowhere near that list.

So! Many! Exclamation marks! WTF!

I'm sure there's a point in there somewhere, but by god it's a painful read.

The M96's multiple design flaws are pretty big ones and there's enough of them to take it off any "great" list immediately. GT3's M96/72 a better bet.

Whether Porsche's financial challenges led to some poor design, engineering and validation at the time or something I don't know. But they went through a decade of some pretty dubious efforts which put some customers off for life and put the frighteners on the marketplace.

You don't have to go exotic to find better. BMW, Honda, Mercedes, to name a few, have all produced a load of better engines.

(The S52 was the US M3 - a breathed on M52. Still probably better than the M96 tbf). S50 and S54 were what we got.

Not all M96 were created equal tho in terms of design flaws.

The early ‘99-00 cars had the dual row IMS which wasn’t bad, ferrous coated pistons, reasonable thickness on the cylinder walls.
Later engines I’d agree got worse in these areas but generally the noise and the power delivery in the package of a little 996 works really well imo. And even the more delicate engines can have its flaws fixed (albeit at >£10k)

OK, remove reliability from the equation and reconsider.

Actually I'm not sure they are at all unreliable when compared to anything similar, its just everyone expects a Porsche engine to be "bulletproof".

You can't really do that, it's moving the goalposts.

I think Porsche trade on that expectation. I also think they've enough sycophants covering their backs to try to gloss over it. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of some of the product but they had a lumpy period.

It will surprise you not one jot that, based on personal ownership and exposure to a fairly extensive cross section of offerings, I disagree.

Per usual, you've made a massive assumption there.

The 6.2 AMG V8 engine is a beast, the latest 4.0 V8 biturbo is pretty special as well. On the BMW front, they've put some great 6 pots in the M3 over the years, and the V8 from the E39 M5 is a great engine. I've not driven one, but the V10 from the M5/6 is meant to be spectacular as well smile

Early c4 cab on ebay with a hartech 3.7 lump. And it's a manual. I'd be selling that aero kit and the wheels personally.

And the cabriolet around it if my coupe engine needed fettling.

Fairly easy to swap the engine on these, just like an old beetle it drops out the back when you jack it up wink

That is truly vile - with the reversing sensors just topping it off...

It is a horror, for sure. Such a car without the 3.7 would be what, 9k? Implication being that the 3.7 adds 9k to the asking, less than the conversion cost. However, if the car was bought as a failure for 5k (or less) then it just about adds up. It's a data point anyway.

I could buy that, swap the engine with mine (and vice versa) and see the cab for 12kish... Hartech 3.7 for c.6K plus labour.
