most 996/997 owners do not post on pistonheads.
So what ?Are you suggesting that posting on PH is more likely to cause engine failure ?
The point being made is that the sample size of 996/997 owners on PH is only a small percentage of the total of 996/997 owners, and therefore any data collected, whilst possibly representative of a larger sample size, won't necessarily be.
Have a look at the shampoo adverts on the TV that say that "87% of women agree it works".....but then states in small print that the sample size was 93 women.

And very few people want to post "my car is absolutely fine & has no engine problems" just in case...
I thought that's exactly what the survey was about.Perhaps the PH survey isn't 100% accurate, but there is a problem and it's common enough to be of concern when considering these cars.
I would suggest that the survey was started as a helpful tool to put some numbers in place.
Looks as though many would rather not know and prefer to concentrate on undermining the survey.
Perhaps we need another survey to see how many 996 owners joined PH because they had a problem with their car
I picked up my 997.1 at start of July. After 2 weeks of ownership the car went into limp mode and was recovered back to the dealership.
Cut the story short, but it had 2 scored cylinders and is currently being rebuilt by Hartech at the dealers cost. This car had full history and only 42k on clocks.
Was purchased as summer car and got 2 weeks use from it, Gutted to say the least

I wouldn't be too gutted if the dealer is paying for a Hartech rebuild Cut the story short, but it had 2 scored cylinders and is currently being rebuilt by Hartech at the dealers cost. This car had full history and only 42k on clocks.

I work at Sea and to 10weeks on 10weeks off. The car had been purchased and I was waiting for 6weeks to go and collect from dealers so was really looking forward to a summer of driving.
I was so angry at first and almost asked for a refund, but after they said they would pay Hartech for the work i took a step back.
Im currently back at Sea now and wont be home until end of November, so now hoping for good weather on my return

Good luck fella, and sorry for missing the timescale when I commented. Still, long term it should work out well for you I was so angry at first and almost asked for a refund, but after they said they would pay Hartech for the work i took a step back.

Cheers, If i had got refund i would have gone out and bought the first 997 i saw to replace it which would have been a bag of spanners. After few heated emails they also upgraded the courtesy car from a Golf diesel eco, save the world 10,000miles to a tank, to a brand new Merc C Class which i rather likedI had reported to them that i was using a lot of oil and sending daily pictures of oil level and mileage. They had also arranged to have the bores inspected in a local Porsche garage near me as I live in Scotland and dealers is in Yorkshire. The car went into limp mode 2 days before this happened, so called them and requested the car to be collected.
They stripped the engine out at the dealership, but after researching the issues i guess they decided to send it to Hartech and just had tto take the hit for costs to keep a good reputation for company
