what is an 'early' 3.4 996?
Discussion
Had a superb weekend in Wales in my 996, car drove beautifully! I did notice though that my exhausts are sitting wonky though and the back box is almost touching the inside of the bumper on one side, I am guessing it is engine mount time? Mine were replaced by the previous owner only 2 years and 7k ago though, is there anything else it could be?

Warm/hot oil pressure - what are you guys seeing?
After a 40 mile blast in the heat yesterday, as I pulled in at home I noticed my oil pressure was showing almost zero at idle. When cold (or not red hot) the gauge waorks fine, approx 1 oil pressure per 1k revs - but the idle worries me. Could it just be very thin oil getting very warm?

Sorry, £23,500? That's bonkers.
But £50K for a 1 year older 993 isn’t? It is funny. Lighter, more powerful and faster than a 993, yet an asking price a little over half that of the cheapest 993 coupe for sale on PH is considered insanely high.

When fully warmed up mine sits just between 1 and 2 at idle. Driving along it's right up around 5. I had an oil service done last week but it was exactly the same before. After a 40 mile blast in the heat yesterday, as I pulled in at home I noticed my oil pressure was showing almost zero at idle. I read that the oil pressure senders can be a bit iffy so it might just be that's going rather than anything more serious.

It sounds like a sorted example & 2 years ago £20k was always the price point to get you into a decent 996.
These are coming of age & all sports cars are comanding premium so I think it’s on the money
That's a good point actually. I've been wanting a 964 or earlier as I'm the only man on earth that thinks the 993 is a pig. Had a bit of a wobble last week and went to look at a 1978 3.0 targa with 140k miles on it for £40k. What I was getting for the money just made no sense when I compared it to my 996.It sounds like a sorted example & 2 years ago £20k was always the price point to get you into a decent 996.

I have to say 993/964 values mean nothing to me. Back in 2006 when I got my first 911 I had choice of 996 & 993, I chose 996 but I only kept it for 2 years as family stuff took over & I got a cayenne. I don't think in 2009 the 993 values where any higher than the 996.
The 996 not being the love child has helped me as mine doubles up as second car & I got it for £13K, if the 996 values had been at 993 levels I would not have a Porsche at all, Boxster no good as I need 3 seats sometimes.
by the time I retire (i plan on keeping 996) it will be 30 years old. Are people saying it is different from anyone driving a 1990 Porsche now?
Does the average joe, know it changed from air to water?
Dont diss the 996, it is a great car, i cant think of anything else for the money that adds joy & reliability.

Those are 2 similar run of the mill models, take away the underlaying persona of I have money as I have a air cooled car & I think the 993 looks very old compared to the 996.
if I was ever to go air cooled it would have to be a 964, https://www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&a...

Took my old girl to Bedford Autodrome yesterday.
Had a great time, and not a thing went wrong (touch wood) other than a squeaky front ARB bush. Setup was (new) M030 springs and dampers, M030 front ARB and H&R rear ARB set to full soft, car felt great and the turn in was incredible. Brake pads were Yellowstuff front and rear which deserve a mention as they were great all day, not a sign of fading on what were fairly knackered standard discs.
I was super impressed with the Goodyear Eagle F1 Assy 5 tyres, geometry was standard so zero front camber so I thought the front tyres would get shredded but they took the abuse like champs all day long with good even wear across the front and rear. Re-checked the tyre pressures when hot and dropped them to 34/38 which felt good to me.
Car could have lapped and lapped but after 30mins or so the water temps were getting high and hot oil pressure was dropping so would pull in to let the motor (and driver!) cool down. Will fit an extended baffled sump this year some time when I change the variocam sliders. Given I'll need to drop the oil anyway soon it seems to be a worthwhile thing to do. Any tips on keeping the motor cool? 3rd rad I guess? I'm not sure my engine compartment fan is working so need to test that. Pleased I fitted my new coolant header tank.
Some pretty serious metal there, two radicals which were borderline dangerous they were so small and fast compared to everyone else! Another 996 3.4 owner was there but seemed to be having some mechanical issues so no opportunity to say hello, very friendly pit lane as per other Javelin events I've been to.
Coolest car there by some distance was an old Alfa Romeo Berlina 1750 race car!

Lads, with all due respect you are tripping if you think a 996 c2 is better looking and a 993 c2.
That’s coming from a 996 fan!
I literally think any other 911 is better looking than a 993 Carrera (the RS one looks nice though) - so maybe you are tripping, maybe it's just subjective. That’s coming from a 996 fan!
