Maybe it confirms the idea that a decent, fully functioning 996 is a £20k car.

I think that's pretty much the way things are. Although I don't subscribe to the idea that because a car has had a lot spent on it in the past it's going to need (disproportionally) more spent going forwards.

That 14k car clearly needs a y-cable and new starter but other than that it should be pretty solid. Obviously it depends on the state of the rust though as it could be a basket case! Not a bad price if it's solid for someone who is happy getting their hands dirty. Plus if it is a 3.6 in a 996.1 then that makes it more interesting to me!

The appeal for me of the earlier 3.4 is the implied improved engine robustness of the 3.4 with the super piston coating and a bit better IMS bearing. Obviously a replacement OEM 3.6 negates this.

As mentioned in passing above, I'm about to hit 150k miles. It will be going to the local specialist for a good service, and a general look over in the coming weeks.

Is there anything the gurus on here would check, specifically, given the mileage? I don't mind paying for the working time spent, even if nothing is found - for peace of mind. There is nothing outwardly wrong with the car other than the usual 2nd gear being a little notchy until warm.

I just did a gearbox oil change on my 986 which improved the gear change. But they just wear on 2nd so its only time till it will need a gearbox rebuild. Personally I wouldn't tell the specialist to go looking for work because that could just make the cost escalate rapidly.

The double DIN thing in that looks a nightmare. I presume that the panel above is now just a blanking plate. Looks like it would be a right pain to operate and see the screen with the gearstick right there in front of it. To be honest, position aside, any of those third party double DIN units never look right in any car to me. Good in terms of adding functionality but always look so obviously out of sorts with the rest of the dash.
I'm of the exact same opinion as you are!
Equally important to me is the graphics of such a device, as well as the look when the radio is off. (no, having the Porsche crest as a wallpaper doesn't make it look oem)
Also the integration with BC, etc. But I do know that I'm a bit anal with these sort of things and I know a lot of people have other priorities and are happy with a cheap after market radio/Naviceiver.

The only double DIN Radio I'd consider in a 996 is the new-ish PCCM+ from Porsche.
But I'd probably just fit an OEM Becker CDR-22 and have a central console delete, if I'd have a 996.

Can't wait for the PCCM+ for my 997, that is hopefully coming next year tough!
Having this OCD type affliction can be expensive unfortunately! I just fitted PCCM+ to my 996 despite knowing that it's almost certainly 5x more expensive than essentially the same thing from Kenwood/Pioneer etc and Porsche don't even include maps for that price the cheeky barstewards! Anyway, I'm happy. There is no way I'd have fitted any of the others so it was PCCM+ or the original PCM with some sort jimmy rigged bluetooth dongle pretending to be a CD changer.

Bob it really depends on your relationship with your garage, I have been using mine for 15 years for all the family cars, even the lads £3k mini gets parked next to £50K+ motors for servicing. My 996 is the obvious glue to using this garage & so its the one the owner & I always talk about.
Come servicing time I tell him I have £X amount to spend on it this year & trust him to judge how is best to spend it, obviously pointing out any issues I think I have.

Thank ATM and jonny, both very valid opinions to think about. Relationship with the garage is good, they have done various bits for me in the past at short notice and un-billed, and they have a decent reputation. I'll maybe have a chat with them in advance too.

Just wow ! Where to start with that......? Does that rollcage have no triangulation / support back to the rear bulkhead / seat base, and no tie-in to the top of the B-pillar ??? ie just bolted to the floor at the foot of the B-pillar. Looks like a Darwin Awards candidate to me.......

With not too much effort I think that “could” be a great looking car.

Take all the crap off and that’s a £30k car at FG laugh

Now there we have something worth looking at. Ad reads well and he hasn’t even mentioned that it’s a sunroof delete car or he has the holy grail umbrella.

Seems a bit of a steal at that money.

I'd prefer it with boxster red to contrast the grey but looks nice all the same.

My word, I think this is about right up there being my perfect 996 cloud9

No, it's not early. It has the PSM button -> e-cable. I'm never sure without looking up about the piston coating tough....

Grey is just about my favorite colour, yes I am that boring boxedin
This is just about the perfect spec for my and how I would have specced it from new. Simply lovely!
Also I'm a sucker for originality and as has been said, it doesn't vome better than still having the original umbrella.

As I always do with cars, I buy the seller. With this I get very, very good vibes!!!!!!

Would I bee in the UK, I would have been on the phone this morning!!!
