I have a problem with the ignition lock barrel - I think. Found the battery totally flat after around 3 weeks. Put another battery on the car. Now when I turn it off and take out the key the radio stays on. Suspect this maybe why the battery went flat.

Also none of the buttons on both keys are working - were all working before. Assume because the car thinks it still has a key in the ignition. I couldn't lock the car fully - as in both doors - until I figured out to do a double lock. The first lock just does the driver door and the car does a single chirp like there is a fault or something still open. If i do a second lock quickly then it does the full central locking but radio remains on.

Had a look at the fuse diagram to see if I can maybe pull out a fuse to shut the car down but only ones I can see also incorporate the central locking and alarm. I'm thinking now that I'll have to leave it connected to a charger until I can figure out what's busted.

Haha if that’s correct the GT3 owners should be fitting Carrera badges on the back of their pride and joys boxedin

Was the Carrera Aerokit available to spec on cars before the GT3 became available to buy. Or was it designed knowing it would go on the GT3 and made available earlier for the base cars ?. Other than the black coloured gurney strip is there any difference between the two kits ?

It's in the brochure (mine is a September 98 hardback FWIW), where it is described as "race proven". It would seem highly unlikely that it was designed primarily for the road car application, rather than the race car.

ETA. The 996 was used for the 1998 season of the Porsche supercup.

Classic ignition barrel symptoms - easy replacement IIRC. Mine is now doing it on Occassion (thinks key is still in when removed), it’s on the list for next service

Yep same with mine, lots of electrical gremlins and the battery prematurely draining. Swapped out the ignition barrel and all sorted. From memory it’s a VW/Audi part that can be had for £15. It’s fiddly and you will swear a lot trying to crack off the factory locktite on the tiny screws that hold the bugger in smile

AFAIK 996.1 Cup and GT3 are very similar overall.

0991 option code 'exclusive programme 996' - seems rare huh?

Well it would be good if he got his facts right, so claiming its a Mk2 isn't a particularly good start.
Unique ? Maybe, but I'm not convinced. This Ocean blue example may have more miles, but it's a nicer car with a far more unique and to my eyes, preferable interior :

Not clear what the option code actually reflects on the car?

Could have been anything from fancy floor mats to full PTS and leather-to-sample.

To my eye, just looks like a “regular” blue C4.

Especially when combined with non-black cabins, dark green is an amazing color.

This 997.2 has sat at the dealer for ages, probably not just because of the silly asking price but also the "colorful" provenance.

It arrived in Switzerland (in the canton of Zug, tax-dodge haven extraordinaire) via the United States and Moscow. That's a synopsis for a whole spy novel right there.

Who can identify the yellow car at top right without googling?

Obviously clean example but are they commanding entry 20ks now? I realise 2nd hand market went bonkers but looks like the price gap between rusty SC and clean early 996 closing…

True, but if you were to buy an early manual 996 C2 coupe that’s been well maintained, is solid and has had all the usual 996 issues addressed, none of which should be too problematic for a car bought for early twenties you’ll have a cracking car that should remain rust free and provide a reasonably low cost ownership proposition.
Not sure you could say the same for a cheap rusty SC ... smile

I think early 20s is a bit punchy. But who knows.

From what I can find:

1997 996 production begins (98MY).
1998 996 Supercup race series using Mezger engine and the "GT3" style body changes, front bumper & rear spoiler (taco style) with side skirts.
1999 996 GT3 road car production begins (00MY) using the same bodykit.

At some point, Porsche offer a Tequipment catalogue for the 996 with a 911 Cup Aerokit option (renamed 911 Aerokit Cup in 2000 for some reason, when they also offer the 911 Aerokit Carrera with a different rear spoiler), which looks the same as that fitted to the Supercup and GT3 but has minor differences internally on the rear spoiler due to the different locations of the intake snorkel on the M96 and Mezger engines (so I presume different part numbers).

I have seen the option in a 1999 catalogue, does anyone have the 1998 version, which features both 993 and 996? In 1999 the brochure references the Supercup racer, it does not reference the GT3, hence the term Cup Aerokit I guess. It was never named a GT3 bodykit.

To further complicate matters, the kit could be fitted either at the factory or the dealer.
