Thought this looked nice for a vanilla Carrera, guess it's not advertised in a place many would look:

Hmm. Mine is the same age, engine and gearbox, yet my car does not qualify for ULEZ exemption. What's going on there?

All 996s and 986s are ULEZ compliant, you need to write to Porsche and request a Certificate of Conformity which you can forward to TFL which shows the NOX emissions are below the specified amount. It's been widely covered on here and elsewhere.

Not strictly True.

I've just been through this battle with my 986. I wont bore you with the details.

Summary

The new Clean Air Zones all round the country use a different / separate list of vehicle types to the TFL site.

Just because some other helpful Porsche Nerd has jumped through the hoops to get their car [and therefore any similar car maybe???] marked as ULEZ exempt on TFL does not transfer over to the new Clear Air Zone system and therefore all the Clean Air Zones all round the country.

I bought 2 more Porsches last year and checked both were ULEZ exempt on TFL before I bought them - they were. Then I drove through Birmingham in one and got fined. That's how I know all of this. This was my 986 which I have now had reclassified as ULEZ exempt in all Clean Air Zones. Took many months.

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

My original 1998 'early' 996 was never marked as exempt even on TFL.

So apologies for being a nit picking TeaWat but we need to be clear when we are talking about ULEZ exemption. Do you mean the London based TFL or the DVLA based Clean Air Zone list for Birmingham, Bath. Bradford, Bristol, Portsmouth and Manchester?

Bloody hell. It becomes a bit of a joke when you have to register your car in different cities! (Although, I'm not surprised it's so disjoint.)

Just the ULEZ in London - can't comment about the others!

London/TfL would be the one I would want to avoid - I'm up there quite often and would be nice to take the car, especially given how often I'm subject to rail replacement buses. Following the threads linked, I've emailed Porsche UK asking for any information/confirmation/certificates they can give me. We shall see. I very much appreciate the guidance though, very grateful indeed.

Up there - serious southerner then.

So my 2001 996 is exempt on TFL but my 1998 996 is not. I have the Certificate of Conformity for both. The emissions on the 1998 car are worse than the 2001 car. What year is your car?

I'm not exactly sure. The V5 says 2000, but it's originally an S reg, and as far as I know it's a very early car, so 98 or 99. I think it was originally registered in the Channel Islands.

Do you have levers for bonnet and boot or buttons?

If you have levers I'd say thats an early car. And why it is not showing as exempt [on TFL] like mine.

Yep levers, and black "Carrera" script on the engine cover (another sign?)

I'd say you're firmly in early car territory there.

Porsche won't send you a certificate of conformity if your car is from some territories - mine was originally an SA car, and they simply refused to issue the cert, despite it being mechanically identical to a C16 car.

My car has a production date of May '98 car - so based on ATM's experience unlikely to pass anyway.

I didn't try to pass my 996. Only went into battle over the 986 as they sent me a fine for £120. Now rescinded.
