what is an 'early' 3.4 996?
Discussion
And there she is after almost nine years in storage.
Major service, all belts and fluids, runs perfect.
A few things to do in the near future:
- A new set of mufflers - I'll go with Top Gear as I have now seen how they are in the flesh on a car which had them on for 8 years. Look new and sound great.
- Steering wheel looks grubby - I'll do a deep clean but most likely I'll have it refurbed properly
- Air con had a leak. Or maybe just sitting that long it just died off. I'll have a go at regassing with a DIY can and if it leaks I'll do the condensers. Not a spendy job
- Rear break lines are starting to rust. I'll get these done
- Ignition switch is starting to be a bit sticky - it's a £15 piece and easy enough DIY
None of which will stop me from enjoying it massively now that I have it close to home, insured, taxed and MOTd.
Happy days.!
I'll post some more glam photos. The owner of the garage which says NO parking doesn't mind before you put me in the bad parking thread.
I had forgotten just how good an early 996 is to drive. They really do come alive when you push them a bit. I bought a ‘98 C2 recently to try alongside my Box 987S. Being 5 and 3, my children are now of an age where they both want to go in the “sporty” car, which I obviously can’t do in a 987.
The plan was to try the 996 for a bit, and if it fitted into my lifestyle then swap both for a 997. But the 996 is so good I’m wondering if perhaps the answer is just to sell the Boxster (if I can bring myself to do it after so many years) and drive the 996. It’s been interesting comparing the two on back to back drives over the last few weeks. Pros and cons on each side. But somehow the 996 manages to feel more “special” even though it’s in a much lower spec than my 987. And it’s hands down better to drive, although I wonder how true this would be if I was comparing a Cayman (or a cabrio 996 which my kids would probably prefer).
Early 996s are a 911 I enjoy driving immensely.

I've got 2 cars with this problem. I thought it needed a full replacement unit from OPC. What's this £15 part?

I went through a phase of wanting a 997 but am now out the other side and embracing the 9x6 addiction. Newer isn't necessarily better. The plan was to try the 996 for a bit, and if it fitted into my lifestyle then swap both for a 997. Don't downgrade from a 996 to a 997. Instead upgrade from a 987 to a 986.
I've been fortunate to have been a passenger in a couple of pre facelift 996s - and tbh they were what I've been looking. However, a mate of mine recently purchased a 3.6 996 C2 manual.
Having driven this and looked at the changes that Porsche made between the pre and post facelifts, why do these not seem to be as desirable? I mean it handles so well, and it really shifts!
I'm now looking at these instead however the prices blur with the 997 gen 1 3.6.
I know that condition is really the most important factor, but it does make it difficult to choose between the three variants.

I've got a lovely low owner, low mileage very well maintained 986 taking up driveway space now that I've got my C2....Don't downgrade from a 996 to a 997. Instead upgrade from a 987 to a 986.
Agree with ATM that the earlier ones feel more alive to drive. However my problem is that the 987 makes a better daily than the 996, and I’m now using the 996 so much that perhaps a 997 would be better for my usage profile. 991 would probably be even better as a daily but I can’t afford one, so moot.
