Can I afford a decent 911 for everyday use?
Discussion
Ok quick thoughts following my first ever drive in a 911 (992) on Monday.
Firstly it’s some car, and certainly a drivers car.
It’s a nice low down position but you still see all the road.
The car is fast and by that I mean very fast, I had a Boxster S 10 years ago but the 992 is on a different level.
I scared the hell out of myself when I floored it the first time along with the rest of the family.
The car wants to go all the time and driving on the roads I was continually battling to stay under the speed limit, when you floor it you have to be careful as it’s almost always over 70 mph but tons of fun.
The car also gets a lot of attention, we parked up in a few places and plenty of people admire it and look at it, I can understand why it is a thing of beauty.
The car I had was metallic black and this specific car whilst looking mean had just sold, but good luck trying to keep it clean – not a chance.
It was a different drive to my previous cars compared to my 640D and before that my A6, those cars were like driving an armchair even though the 640 with run flats and m sport suspension was very harsh.
The 992 was a firm ride but much more comfortable than the BMW.
The sound I thought was superb but then I have nothing to compare it to in relation to another car or a NA engine. I would be very happy with the sports exhaust option.
The car did have some faults which the dealer told me had to be cancelled off the dashboard and this car had only done £10k miles so it seems there are teething problems.
The demo I drove had PDCC, but I couldn’t tell any difference when it was on or off. The cooling seats were nice but pretty redundant for most of the year, the sunroof was ace and a must have.
The speed limit info was helpful and the surround view useful too but these are both expensive options, I would take them if I had the cash (which I don’t).
The biggest issue though was the space for the kids, at one point I didn’t think we would be going anywhere, my 10 year old daughter is fine to sit in the seat but my 7 year old still needs a high back booster, the passenger seat needed bringing forward slightly to accommodate him as we couldn’t use a small booster seat only as the sides are too wide to fit in the space.
The kids are ok now but in 3-4 years time it’s going to be difficult for them so it really is now or never…
Had the chat with the dealer after the drive, build time is 7 months which is just too long for me to wait so I’m looking at the nearly new market it seems but there are very few 992’s around.
Will probably keep eye on the adds and see if I can find a decent deal towards the end of next quarter.

Thought if I was going to do it properly I should get the new one.
I know the car will drop in value like a 5$ hoe in the 3-4 years I have it but I’ll live with that as it’s part of the ownership.
I have a decent personal car allowance which covers my monthly payments and with the base C2 I can spec it just as I want to a decent level and still make a good saving on the C2S, ok it may be less that than that model when I move it on but it is what it is.
If I don’t like it or it’s not for me I’ll trade it early for a Panemera or something else, looking at the used values on the C2S cars at the moment they are still fairly close to list.
If I lose a bit of cash, so be it, but I can cross off having owned my dream car before 44.

You’d be better off buying a 991.2 GTS with 8k miles on for around 88-90k from an OPC or even a specialist. It’s going to lose less money than the new 992. Quite a few 992’s are already sub the 991.2GTS prices.
The GTS makes a very sensible buy in most cases.
Get some finance quotes on the two cars over a 2 or 3 year period. I bet the GFV / balloon is much stronger on the GTS and what with it being cheaper to start with, you’ll see the savings.
Thanks but I’m not interested in the GTS The GTS makes a very sensible buy in most cases.

My decision goes beyond money if it was I’d by a 20 year old banger and just drive that to get from point A to B lol

It’s a tiptronic hence I think I’d rather buy 911 Virgins manual car - worth the premium over a tip (for me) for sure. They’re not scrap and of course you can dd them but don’t think you won’t get eye watering bills. Rusty turbos £10k pls. Gearbox breaks £10k pls. Engine breaks (mine did) £15-£25k to rebuild and if it’s too far gone like the 997 GT2s engine sitting at Porsche Torque which has identical engine a new engine on exchange basis now £50k! 3 Rads £5k. Clutch if manual £3k. Rather than chat about it go buy one and daily lol. If I was buying for that type of dd 10-15k type use I’d go for an M2 (never had a BMW and I love it’s muscle car looks) ![wink](/inc/images/wink.gif)
would you advise against anyone buying any 997 turbo without a £30k fund for repairs or a warranty?![wink](/inc/images/wink.gif)
I had one for a few weeks years a go and loved it dearly, an absolute weapon.
I maybe somewhat naive but I’ve never understood why anyone would run a performance car without paying for a decent warranty even if it’s just for piece of mind

Barmy for allowing myself to purchase a car I’ve always wanted?
Even you know you're barmy. prismv said:
My heart wants one very much but my head is saying no.
If you could easily afford the money for this car, your original budget wouldn't have been half what you're now spending. If you could easily afford your original budget you wouldn't have had a question in the first place. Why would anyone choose a BMW or Audi over a 911?

This was before I was introduced to HP with a balloon, so for the same money as what I paid for my A6 on lease 5 years ago I can get a 992.

You currently own (outright?) a BMW so I presume you can answer that. Why would anyone choose a BMW or Audi over a 911?
If you want to spend £50k for 3 year's 911 ownership, go for it.

Cheers mate, haters gonna hate.
It wasn’t a decision I took likely but I’m not getting any younger and I get to scratch the 911 inch.
Can’t wait, Silverstone Porsche Day invite came through too so I’ll be looking forward to that also ??
I don't think anyone is hating on you, just making suggestions that would have saved you money and allowed you to scratch your 911 itch in a different way for less cashIt wasn’t a decision I took likely but I’m not getting any younger and I get to scratch the 911 inch.

Once I saw the 992 I wasn’t willing to settle for less

10 sleeps before I pick mine up
just glad I didnt decide to wait and save £1k a month for the next hundred months before I finally bought one (joke....!) Mrs dgswk would have sure spent it in the meantime bless her. Just hope we get an Indian Summer now!
Yeah, coming into Porsche ownership cold, the 992 is something special for sure, no compromise here either.
That will be a special day for you for sure, please post pics when you get it ![smile](/inc/images/smile.gif)

Personally buddy I would insist on it with OPC and wait for the car longer. They’ll miraculously make it happen even if they say they can’t - they just want to fill build slots and don’t care what customer wants. A special colour makes a 911 look so much more special. 992 reminds me of a modern interpretation of a Singer. Well jell!!!Well I need to scratch the 992 inch now so Gentian blue will have to suffice for now but maybe after the next 4 years I’ll spec it for my 992.2
