Next Cayman… EV?

The 718 EV so so far behind that I doubt that it'll show it's face this year. I spoke to my SA last week and he said they've no idea when it will be released but they do know that the 982 platform will still be available until the end of '24 however there most probably won't be a mid life facelift.
The only thing I can see them doing is adding cruise and/or speed limit display as standard given the new speed limiting legislation in the UK from July '24. Obviously the price will increase..... it is Porsche afterall.
At what point is the manufacture of 718's impacted in Europe by the new cybersecurity laws? At a guess production will probably need to end for Europe alongside the NA Macans. The only thing I can see them doing is adding cruise and/or speed limit display as standard given the new speed limiting legislation in the UK from July '24. I read that sales of Caymans and Boxsters in Europe, Japan, and South Korea will cease sometime this year. Apparently the cybersecurity regulations require investments so massive that developing the software for low volume car series isn't feasible. IIRC the reasons for the Macan's demise are slightly different, to do with the whole platform being discontinued, again because of the cybersec regulations.GT4RS said:

What’s the point of a fully electric sports car?
I am completely with you on this . I was at a Ferrari Dealership last week where we were discussing fitting voice boxes to EVs in order to replicate the sound of a V12 . Imagine the early days of the ICE and Henry Ford stood trying to get the Model T to sound more like a Horse . Complete madness .I always thought two of the the main joys of owning a sports car was how it feels to drive and how it sounds.
Personally I couldn’t care less if it can get to 60mph in 2 seconds or less and apparently saves the planet.
Ev will end up killing the sports car market.

They will sell like hot cakes though.
Opinion is bound to me biased on a forum like Pistonheads (and all it stands for)..but I think the Cayman EV will be an outstanding sales generator yet a woeful car to enthusiasts.
Are you sure they will sell? Heavy EV sports cars with limited range can only go so far. Quite literally!Opinion is bound to me biased on a forum like Pistonheads (and all it stands for)..but I think the Cayman EV will be an outstanding sales generator yet a woeful car to enthusiasts.

It’s 2035 and the e-fuels have to be 100% climate neutral.. which by the way the European regulators mandated because it kept Germany happy but also made the allowance technically and commercially unworkable. Someone in a committee room in parliament had a lot of fun with that one +EU is 2040…

Considering the Taycan has set the standard for a well sorted engaging BEV I don’t see why Porsche would fail to do the same with the 718 EV?
Don’t get me wrong, I love my 718 GTS 4.0 but considering the magic Porsche have done with the Macan and Cayenne I doubt they’ll drop the ball on the next gen 718.
I’d be interested in what they do with a hybrid 911.

I hope they make it work but it would take literal magic to turn usual 2200kg+ EVs into an electric sports car weighing around 1500-1600kg. The tiny BMW i3 had to use a carbon tub to get its weight down and I don't see Porsche doing that with the Cayman platform due to costDon’t get me wrong, I love my 718 GTS 4.0 but considering the magic Porsche have done with the Macan and Cayenne I doubt they’ll drop the ball on the next gen 718.

... A smaller lighter Taycan would be almost ideal if they can sort out the handling.
I haven’t yet driven an EV Taycan. What problems did you find with the handling, please? If it’s anything like this I’m in. Already have a charger installed at home and we have plenty in work. https://www.exhaustnotes.com.au/porsche-showcases-...
I'm not a fan of EVs. I wouldn't have one if you paid me. And, as for paying a lot of money for a luxury good - a second car, that's meant for fun, on an automatic only EV? You must be joking!
Trump may get in this November. If he does, he says he's going to allow manufacturers to offer both EVs and ICEs throughout his administration and maybe beyond, depending who replaces him. He's not having any of this 80% by a certain date tosh.
Then we'll see what the manufacturers do.

Manufacturers are already adjusting and rolling back their EV targets. I see the current implementation of BEVs only being responsible for 10-20% of future personal cars in the West and even less worldwide Trump may get in this November. It won't be anything like that. Going by the latest spy shots this week it hasn't changed notably. The front grill is like that of the forthcoming 992.2 - looks odd in my opinion. Perhaps the interior might be where the step change is with a mini Taycan dash interior vibe.
