Those that have had both probably only bought them for road driving in which case the Spyder is more suited to road fun than the GT4. So I can see why they might prefer the Spyder. For those of us who buy our weekend car for regularly taking on tracks the GT4 is by far the better car.
Simples....

They are built for a primary purpose, Spyder - road and GT4 - track, and both excel in their intended purpose.
Porsche made them different by design.

not really, the 987.2 R and Spyder are the same design, the 718 GT and Spyder are rumoured to be the same spec.
The 981 Spyder was well a GTS with a 3.8 ;-) and felt a bit of an after thought imo with a really bad designed roof !
and just took a few 718 parts, imo it was like a 718 test mule ! so more 718 with a 3.8 over a GTS with a 3.8 if you like.

The PTV and EPS ruined the car for me as a driver, but as others have said for a posers car on the road it was a great thing :-p looks, rare, etc etc
and while the faster rack gave the feel of good steering and good turn in, for a drive it was poor when pushed. the 3.8 was also too much for the basic GTS electric the car had imo. when pushed again way too much PSM flashing lights and PTV going on, so untrackable, the GT4 had a fantastic PSM system from the 991 RS.

As I said forget about what car you like or don't the GT4 is a better car in every area, that is not a view that's pretty much a fact of the design and parts used. it seems the 718 is changing all that and the 718 Spyder will match the GT4 rather than being a under dog.

people get too hung up what they own and that has to be the best, I owned every thing and say the truth about every thing.
Like the GTS EPS which is that models down fall for me to ever own one the Spyder was no better in that area just faster.

My perfect car would be a Spyder with GT3 steering feel the x51 3.8 , adjustable sus arms and an electric roof with boot access.

atm I have to own the 987.2 car for the feel/drive and the 991.2 GT3 for the engine a perfect paring for me any way.

I asked Jens if we could fit a 718 steering rack to my 981 GTS but he said no frown - That would have been an awesome change.

The 981 Spyder has the 991 Turbo steering which is a different rack from the 981 GTS..I drove the 981 GTS and hated the steering as it was vague and lacking in feel but i find the steering on my 981 Spyder much better.A lot of the perceived difference between the GT4 and Spyder is down to the tires, GT4 has 245/295 f/r MPSCs and the Spyder has 235/265 f/r on totally inferior P zeros..Put the Michelins on the Spyder and the steering feel would be on par with the GT4s.

Alot of people who have driven the Spyder and GTS say it feels very much the same but the rack is shorter. I've been told the only thing I can do is add a Spyder Steering Wheel (which I have done) and adjust the GEO. CG also said people are reporting way better steering feel from moving to PS4S, so these are my next changes in the spring. I don't hate it enough to want to change my car.

I've maxed camber on my GTS and the steering feels better to me that it did stock, especially in Sport Chassis mode with the firmer damper settings.

PS4Ss would improve it again I think.

yes although the older MPSS had more feel imo, just the PS4S is a better all round tyre and far better in the wet, it's also got stiffer side walls so feels firmer but that makes the steering react more. one thing I have noticed as I have now had 10+ sets of MPSS and 3 sets of PS4S once the edge has worn on the PS4S the turn in vanishes and that's with 4mm left on the tyres :-( So slight worn PS4S you loose that amazing turn in the tyre has sadly.

The 981 Spyder was an amazing car at normal speeds, the steering was fast and direct.(hence people who drive at 70% of the cars window will say how amazing it is) only when pushed it went to poo esp in the wet.
unlike most I ran mine all though last winter and summer as a daily, and in the snow, I know the car very well due to the miles I added in all weathers.

And as people say as a road car it's a great car (bar the gearing) as a drivers car it's let down in too many area's mainly the EPS and the PSM.

Sorry to say trying to make a GTS a track car seems pointless, the PSM system really is poor on track and you will just get PTV issues imo.
EPS well it's made the car un buyable for me :-( which is a shame as A Cayman GTS would have been a perfect daily for me, hence I have ran a R (ok 2 R's) for 5 years as a daily car and the last 8 months the 981 Spyder was my Daily.

I know all these cars inside out as I do so many miles all year round.

my post was not an opinion , I was stating a fact that the GT4 is more cable and better in every area, not which car I liked.

Although because the GT4 had far better EPS, PSM, Brakes etc etc I would take the GT4 every day of the week, but that was not the point of my post. as I don't care what people like and people don't care what I like, that's just personal choice.

What I don't like is hype.

the new 718 Spyder will be a GT4 soft top so people say, that's either means the GT4 will be like a 718 with tweaks or they have upped the 718 Spyders game some what to be on a level playing field this time, not the under dog it was.

Back in the 987 days it was a level playing field with the R. and it seems 718 it will be a level playing field.

GT4 was a special car just let down by a few things. Spyder was a bit of an after thought imo and very lacking.
That's does not mean it was a bad car, it was just not on parr with a GT4 in many area's.

To say other wise would be daft.
Here's a fact :

I have both cars owned from new, and I personally - repeat personally - have more fun driving the Spyder on the road than the GT4. driving
I don't see how this can be disputed regardless of the technical make up etc of each car ??

Alot of the M3 guys are saying the PS4S have a softer side wall?

Won't be making the GTS a track car, but more focused, feeling road car. I am testing Radical's next week @ Silverstone so might end up in an SR1/SR3 for track, GTS for road.

Spyders are mostly used as road cars, so no surprise they're not driven at more than 70% of their limits. The limits on an S/GTS/Spyder/GT4 are so high you're in licence losing territory if you get near to them on the road.

Complaining about the issues they have in a situation they find themselves in a couple of times a year (at most) at a track day doesn't make sense to me. Enjoying them in the environment they excel at is a much better use of the car!

I agree if you think the Spyder is more fun that's great news and I am very happy for you :-) I really am.

I enjoyed my 8 months using the 981 Spyder as a daily, we had a great summer for it, I did not use my 987.2 car that often as I wanted to use the 981 as much as possible knowing I was going to sell it sooner than later.

my other half loved the car more than any other car I owned and we both had some great trips over the summer in ours.

I did not gel with my GT4 100% (I wanted more from it but I still loved it to bits) and I found the Spyder lacking even more , it is what it is.

I sold the GT4 after 2 years of course but I ran these 4 at the same time back to back so know them all inside out.
I don't hate any of the cars and I choose Porsche over any other brand the last 5/6 years, does not mean some have flaws.

The pinnacle of my collection never to be repeated what I did do was give honest feedback on them all as and when I had them, they are only cars at the end of the day.

Fastest colour though :-p Launch colours are always the best to showcase a car(hence they are launch colours) I changed my order from PTS to go Yellow, imo it was a stunning colour for a GT4 and would be my 1st choice if buying again.

As always colours is very personal. But GT cars need solid bold colours imo strange post to make though, but that's forums.

I get and do respect what you say, and do actually enjoy reading your posts. However a lot of what is said by many people is subjective and everyone is different, although I know it's sometimes difficult to keep that out the way of a decent argument at times smile
The main thing is to just try and enjoy whatever you drive I think driving

It was my understanding the the yellow ones are so fast that their rear wing end plates fly off at speed, is that correct?

Interesting indeed, it all personal nonsense. People love GT3 RS's in Violet, I can't stand it. Each to their own and all that.

Yellow GT4s are at least a second a lap faster at Yas...
