Thank you all you tall people, really helpful. Although the cabin size doesn`t suit all those 6'3'' plus it seems with buckets and pdk many cope well and cabin size doesn`t necessarily curtail enjoyment.
Its ages since I used a manual. I`m thinking I`d probably prefer two hands on the wheel and to concentrate on line anyways. So that and what you guys have fed back pretty much seals it - I`ll likely concentrate on pdks.

I’m 6’2.5” and have a PDK R with buckets. No issues in daily use, first trackday coming up on the 3rd June and I might have to remove the padding to fit with a helmet. We’ll see.
My S race car was a nightmare with a cage as it forced the seat forward and we had to run with no seat cushion to avoid hitting the cage above. The cage made the interior space more of a problem than the road car!
I love the R dimensions as a whole, feels compact and intimate compared to the GT4 which is much more R8 than Elise.

I’m 6’6” and have done track days in my PDK R and have not needed to remove the seat padding when wearing a helmet. I have a half cage fitted which does not compromise seat movement in any way. Always appreciate an idea and I won`t rule it out. If one comes up locally I`ll go and at least have a look. The extra 10k odd a disadvantage though, as is the fact that the 981 GTS is not where my heart lies and I doubt that`ll change
If I wanted a PDK cayman I would go 981 GTS, cost to buy is an none issue , it’s cost to own and you get the 10k back come sale time. I thought they were both about £50 to £55k though so 5k difference. Gen 2 PDK is night and day better, and the tuning options on the 981 are higher.
I am an R fan ,having owned 2 and 30k plus miles in them, but I would only buy a manual 987.2 car. If I wanted PDK it would be the 981 GTS every time.
Also you will have real trouble selling a PDK cayman R if you change your mind later.
And last if you are over 6 foot again the GTS wins cabin wise.
Good luck in your hunt, but make sure you really try PDK in Manual in both cars.
I’m 6’ 4”. My jeans are just right at 36” inseam (tall people will know what that signals).
I find any car challenging with a helmet. My 964 is manual and I can work the pedals because I had the rear of an aftermarket seat lowered inside the rails. My manual 986 is a struggle. The seat is already on the floor pan and I can’t get the seat back far enough to operate the clutch effectively. I use it on the track because it’s cheap enough to be disposable. My PDK R was workable on the track as I didn’t need to operate a clutch. My 987 PDK Spyder is on a ship to NZ right now. While it’s unlikely to see much track time it’s good to know I will be able to use it there. I wouldn’t have considered a manual or even a 981.

Agreed SteveI would have bought Manual or PDK, depending which car came up first. So happens it was PDK, and I'm very pleased with it
Right spec and condition are more important than PDK or manual, though there will obviously be a small number who only want one or the other
Stroke of luck today at Brands Hatch where the proud owner of a lovely 981 GTS (manual, leather dash, pccb) not only let me sit in his car but also took me out for a very impressive spin. It was only my second ride ever in a Porsche. Last time was in my brother`s, he had an already then old air cooled 911 back in the early nineties. It felt like a real privilege.
Given comments made suggesting that the GTS cabin is larger than the R`s, I was expecting a bit more space. It was ok though and given the seats were sports rather than buckets leaves me hope for the R which despite today`s pleasure remains my target. Porsche911`s suggestion of checking out both pdks/cars personally and properly is probably a sensible one though.
The brakes were really sharp and he did a lot of laps each time out. He`d activated the PASM but hadn`t put it in sport mode let alone sport plus (which he said was so loud that he`d been flagged off last time he used it!). It was well faster than my 330i. He was braking before Paddock Hill 113mph against my 110, but where the real difference was, was through the bends. Felt a bit like I was on balls of wool not wheels when I went back out in the bmw.
Great day though, and good to have my son with me. Between us we`ve now notched up three track days. We both had a mishap, he took Paddock Hill quite simply too quickly (while I wasn`t in the car!) and ended up in the gravel. I span with the dsc fully deactivated coming out of Druids. Was the tyres honest! Seriously, there had been no one around me and took the opportunity to push on a bit harder than I had been
