That is the point I continually make - PDK can make a very good fist of disguising the lag. In a manual gearbox ( or PDK in manual) you are stuck in 6th and the lag that goes with it.
Yes, my TTS was S-Tronic too and the gearbox did nothing to mask the lag either at take off or on acceleration. Also had the nasty habit of turbo overrun so you kept going when stopping.

Didn't try the fast take off from idle in the 718S Cayman, nor noticed any overrun. In gear lag (manual box) seemed much better than the TTS' but still noticeable. The journalist with me asked if I'd found any lag, before telling me he agreed there was some.

But as I've said, if you're a fan of turbo delivery, don't mind 4 pot engines, and are used to the lag/thrust progress of this type of set up it'll be better than most out there.

What kind of dog have you got and where do you put it in the Cayman?

Border Collie, and a Black Labrador. The Collie doesn't do sports cars, but the Lab goes on a passenger seat with a harness. Chewed up a few handbrake levers when she was younger, but settling down now.

Press pedal on the left. Move the stick in the middle of the car. You can change down as many gears as you need to - about 4 to choose from at 60mph. Am I the only person that does this?

^^^ You got it!

718s have a bit of lag; 981s have great throttle response but are low on torque until the revs build.

You spend your money and you take your choice! If I was in 718 I'd want PDK.

I'll make sure I've figured out how to get the boost gauge visible before I drive a 718 next, but I don't reckon there's 1 second of lag at 60mph in 6th, let alone 3 seconds.

Liam
I'd like to take a BIG wager on it being well over a second - 3 seconds, perhaps not quite - its over 2000 rpm.

Luckily I'm not a gambling man, especially about my perceptions. I've been fooled by myself too many times before. wink

Unfortunately I'm travelling on business for most of the next 2 weeks, but as soon as I'm home I'll be calling the OPC about a test drive in the demo 718 Cayman that landed a couple of weeks ago. I'll be aiming to be able to look at a boost gauge and put a stopwatch on it. biggrin

I wish it could have been mine. I just came to the Cayman a few months late for that to be an option. Had been keeping my eye out for a used manual in a spec that I like, but the old base model is much slower than the turbo one. And manual cars seem thinner on the ground in any version. Must be something to do with the best auto box ever...

I can't find that actual quote (but I can assure you it exists) but if you look at this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISIUGwt_t6w you will see that the 911.2 suffers up to 3 seconds of delay. Now there are a number of reasons why the lag on a 991.2 engine wouldn't be as bad as a 718 - it isn't as heavily boosted, it's bigger and therefore has more go off boost and it has twin turbos which will spin up faster than the single turbo of base 718. Having driven both the 991.2 and the 718 there is a VAST difference in how intrusive lag is, to the point where I would happily buy a 981.2 with a 991.2 engine, but would have serious reservations about a 718.
Well hot damn.

After watching that excellent link (thanks for sharing) I'm really liking that 991.2, with 3.0l forced induction.

Back to the man-mathculator. irked

Seems opinions on the 718 are starting to swing heavily in its favor...

The new 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster is one of the best cars currently available. Note that my definition of a car has everything to do with how it makes you feel when in the driver’s seat. True, this is Porsche I’m talking about, but Mazda, Volkswagen, Chevy, Subaru, and FCA also build cars that give me immense satisfaction. The thing with the 718 is that it has no shortcomings.

Wow - it sounds like a Scooby! , next they'll be saying the door clunk is like a Golf.

I think I'd want it to sound like a PORSCHE !!!

I found an identical match for sound inside roof up its like my dads CLK 270 CDI, especially when coming down the box. My demo (boxster S) doesn't have a sports exhaust so I cannot comment on that sound.

Went to a boxa.net meet and a blast through the twisties and i find it abit on and off in driving style, and you want throttle response mid bend its not there.

However my brother in law said 4 have popped up at his work, so obviously selling.

Is/was the demo 718S manual or PDK out of interest?

It says WRX shamming loud, not "it sounds like a WRX" or 'is as loud as a WRX". It is saying that it is louder than a WRX but not implying that they sound the same.

have a look at the definition of shamming :

verb (used with object), shammed, shamming.
6.
to produce an imitation of.
7.
to assume the appearance of; pretend to have:
to sham illness.

718S PDK.....great box, but numbs the driving experience even more. Although my wife absolutely loves it as it makes it very easy to drive.

Ambiguous wording? Is it WRX shamming or loud shamming? IMVHO it is moot, either you like it and can live with a Cayman or you don't and buy a different car. I'd hold on to see what the aftermarket can offer for exhaust systems. What I've heard from Fabspeed do to the 991.2 sounds very promising and I think they have a 718 for development.

Oh dear..... Prepare for political incorrectness.....

When your mrs can drive something as fast or as easy as you can, you have just bought the wrong car😄

The clutch on my 981 is just a bit to heavy for some wimps, and I am so pleased about that. Driving a sports car used to be a test of man and machine, but with every safety device on board today and a PDK any idiot can drive it.👩

Thats probably enough for now....................
Mind you the 7 speed DSG in my vw 1600 deisel bluemotion is not bad and you can put it in sports mode as well, and believe it or not my wife can drive it to😊

Unknown person, never to be heard again.

That is what I found too. The car is more lively, less inert and unflappable than before. It requires more work, which is a good thing IMO.
Sounds like a loud continuous fart though.
