What is ns housing?
Near Side housing? Perhaps?
No

Car can be sold in LHD or RHD. So surely Near Side would swap round?
Good point.
I think the repairer has invoiced the parts they have used identified by their standard approach of 'left hand side of the box would be NS / nearside' and 'right hand side would be OS / offside'. I don't think the parts are listed NS/OS officially - just the way they are invoiced

The transmission only has one 'opening' side (to facilitate diff removal) and depending on the type of repair you have to remove one side to access and repair the other side seals.

Worth noting that a PDK in a 911 is the other way round! So if you said a part was NS on a Boxster/Cayman it would be OS on a 991 (in the UK at least!)
I know the diff is on the driver side on the 981 so not NS. And from the diagrams I have seen show that the diff only contains gear oil and the gear oil didn't need topping up. My problem was definitely clutch fluid leaking out.

So like I say above maybe they just replaced all possible seals. I'm hopeful the problem is fixed and if it is then I don't really care what seals were changed and why. I just hope it's stopped leaking and that it stays that way.

Is a tiptronic box; not a PDK - it has a lock up torque convertor and visible clutches for each gear ratio

You can see the diff housing is set to one side specifically in the pic above and the shift forks and 'PDK' clutch. Arrows were on the pic already; not specific to components.......
Yes

This gearbox on display was not a PDK. The guy did tell me what Box it was but I can't remember for definite now. Its definitely a slusher rather than an automated manual with dual clutches. It doesn't need to be a Porsche box. Most of their work is probably with traditional slushers.

So I got the car home and was feeling pretty good about myself. I thought I'd drop the roof and get a bit of wind in my hair. That pretty good feeling ended abruptly. Roof started opening and then stopped. I have an error on the dash which says - fault of soft top control system. I think the roof is still closed but the clasp is open. Tried turning it on and off but it doesn't want to do anything. No movement from the roof and the same error or warning just keeps popping up on the dash. Luckily I had my new half cover waiting to go on.

That is annoying to hear. frown

Do you think that it might just have been a bit too cold for it with todays low temperatures? It is advised with the soft top on my 370Z not to use it below 5 degrees, maybe yours is similar perhaps?

I'd been driving the car for a few hours so it was warmed up inside. The roof looked dry. It could have been jammed up by ice yes but surely that wouldn't throw a control module error. Surely Porsche have thought of that. I'd expect better. It's totally frozen now. It won't even try to close or lock the clasp.

Annoying. Makes me glad that I have a Cayman .... smile

I have wondered what happens if a motorised cabrio roof won't operate. Is there a manual back-up (winder handle you attach and wind 'round to make it close) anywhere? There was such a thing on the sunroof on the 944 so it's not a new concept to Porsche.

I would have thought this might have been more in case the fabric is wet through, frozen and then might crack rather than bend/fold as it normally would in normal temps.

yes there is a manual back-up

I have never actually had to use it, which makes me glad that I have a Boxster, the best of both worlds .... smile

Ah, one of the old debates: which is better, Boxster or Cayman? It's up there with "Jam first or cream first?" and "who won the wars of the roses?"

All of them will rage to the end of time, completely unanswered ....

I don't think there is a debate, you pays your money, you takes your choice.

If my car didn't live in a garage I probably would have bought a Cayman, I would be delighted to own either thumbup

Cream first. Lancaster. Cayman. I'll take any of them the other way around though, and without feeling I've lost much.

Just took the car to a body shop for a Quote. He was just guessing while he stood looking at it and I kind of lost track of what he was saying because the numbers just kept going up and up and UP. I think we landed on 7500 plus VAT. So I left with my tail between my legs.

He was all about removing anything bent and replacing it. Then basically painting the whole car except for the bonnet and front bumper. Obviously it doesn't have a roof to paint.

Yes. Bodywork has a habit of getting very expensive very quickly.

You could post up some good photos of the bits that need repairing and we can all have a look and a guess at better ways of doing it. (Apols if there are such photos already on this thread.)

No need to apologise

I will get some more pics today. I dont need much persuasion to add pics. I could even try a video but maybe that's a bit too 'down with the kids.'

Seven and a half grand for that does feel steep. Those bodyshop boys know how to charge. (They did know it was a private job rather than an insurance one didn't they?)

Someone will doubtless be along soon who knows what they are talking about but I'd have thought that that could be made to look quite a lot better very cheaply. can you get behind the top of the rear wing to push the worst of the dent out? Would a Chipsaway type place be able to take the sting out of the door damage?

The split on the rear panel is kinda nasty. I wonder if there is any way to join the two edges up without it looking too hateful. You've patched it with tape but there may be something semi-permanent that would look better.
