Brakes (again)
Over the 191 pages there's been lots of useful contributions regrading brake upgrades. I wondered what firm conclusions had been reached? My R has the OEM steels with the GT3 master cylinder and high temperature fluid upgrade, but I'm still slightly nervous re their stopping capabilities on track and road. So, assuming that I'm going to track the car a good few times in 2020, and I'm happy to spend hundreds rather than thousands on upgrading my brakes, and I don't want any rituals to be necessary each time I drive the car, then what do people recommend as the next step up, please?
Thanks in anticipation.

2 piece rotor upgrade on the front and some proper pads. Most opt for the Girodisc offering. Over the 191 pages there's been lots of useful contributions regrading brake upgrades. If you want serious stopping power then I like the PFC pad compounds. Personally I like the 01 compounds.
They are carbon metallic so are pretty aggressive on their dust as they are their performance.
Less aggressive dust would be something like an RS29 from Pagid.
i have fitted Giro discs up front with Ferodo DS2500 pads all round and had no issues at all on a very fast paced week long tour of the Alps and Pyrenees last year, haven't done the GT3 master cylinder yet, but i understand that this adds feel rather than additional bite or resistance to fade.

Great set up for performance, no worries at all on track, autobahn or the ring. When cold the pads are noisy which will lead me to find a quieter alternative in 2020.
Not suggesting your pads are not noisy, as I’ve heard many folk say they squeel. Great set up for performance, no worries at all on track, autobahn or the ring. When cold the pads are noisy which will lead me to find a quieter alternative in 2020.
But for context, I have GiroDiscs and RS29s all round and I don’t hear a peep out of them until I apply the brakes when reversing. That’s the only time they squeel.
I’ve had RS29s on 5 of my performance cars now and always been quiet.

I'll say it again one more time so maybe you'll finally get it. In gear speeds depend on wheel/tyre rolling circumference (19" vs 20") and max engine revs.
Facts are fine as long as they are put in context:
The 981 has 500rpm more than a 987R (7300 vs 7800):
81mph * 1.0386 = 84mph
Now do you understand? To mimic a 987 in a 981, change gear at 7300rpm![driving](/inc/images/driving.gif)
Interesting as the calcuations are, the problem for me remains the same. The R goes too fast in each gear and, regardless of why, the 981 is even worse. And if I wanted to change up early I'd buy a turbo engined car.Facts are fine as long as they are put in context:
The 981 has 500rpm more than a 987R (7300 vs 7800):
- 76mph / 7300rpm = 0.0104
- 0.0104 * 7800rpm = 81mph
- 987 rolling circumference (19" wheels, 265/35/19 rear tyres) = 2098mm
- 981 rolling circumference (20" wheels, 265/35/20 rear tyres) = 2179mm
- 981 is (2179-2098)/2098*100 = 3.86% larger than 987
81mph * 1.0386 = 84mph
Now do you understand? To mimic a 987 in a 981, change gear at 7300rpm

I liked the 981 GTS when I had some track time with one, but at the end of the session I got back into my R and over some epic roads, I had more fun in the R on the way home. Though I do get the GTS appeal, especially if the car is for daily use or you like a bit more refinement.

Just curious on your RS29 pads are you using the adhesive antivibration shims that Porsche fit as standard or leaving them out?But for context, I have GiroDiscs and RS29s all round and I don’t hear a peep out of them until I apply the brakes when reversing. That’s the only time they squeel.

They’re left out and I have titanium shims in place.
Thanks, mine too and they squeal like a pig all the time! Must be fitting the Girodisc that helps then. Or do you only fit new pads to new disks?

Sadly sold one of my 2 R's today - a great car but having 2 on the drive was getting more difficult to justify! I will leave to the new owner to post if they wish.
I bought this car. I came across this by chance as it was one that had previously come up and missed out on a while back. Full spec - manual, buckets, PSE, PCCB, chrono and in silver which I always preferred to white, black or Peridot. Can't argue with that. Am very happy and the seller was great to deal with. Quick quick.. buy a Cayman R because EVO thinks its a performance bargain.
Oh you all already own one? Okay, stand down![biggrin](/inc/images/biggrin.gif)
