Regarding PTS on a 718, I think it's pretty much a "no-go" across Europe in general, not just the UK. I asked when I bought my GT4 in Switzerland and was told that it is unlikely to be approved and the cost is now eye-watering! I understand that the same is said in Germany (even in the Stuttgart dealership) ...

However, here there is no messing around with allocations, having to buy other cars to get a slot, or taking dippers (I tried the latter and was refused but got one of the first cars at my dealership anyway; first ever Porsche purchase anywhere, not just here ...)
Pretty much the same for me in Switzerland too, although I bought a second hand 996 turbo from a different dealership in 2010 and had test driven a Macan Turbo at my OPC in 2018 before deciding on the GLC 63S. They said that if PTS did arrive, it would be at the end of the production run and I would risk not getting one if I waited.

I was torn between Riviera and Voodoo either one was a winner for me and like others no PTS for 718 no CXX options and the stock sound track all swayed me into sticking with my current one until the 983 Spyder bum fight kicks off laugh

Another beauty here biggrin. Looks fantastic in this light. Enjoy!

Early reports of strut tower failure on a 12 day old 718 Spyder.. as I mentioned at launch, and after personally photographing and posting the wheel arch of the car at Goodwood motor show last year....same exact design as 981... same choice of construction and material.

What is the source of the reports and how many?

Following up… there were a number of posts across different mediums of a 718 Spyder suffering a suspension failure during apparently normal driving, multi lane carriageway, in Germany. Seem to have first been reported on Facebook and then picked up on RennList, initially reported as a strut tower failure.

Pictures have since been posted and it turns out that in this instance the problem is at the rear of the car with the top mount of the damper being blown out.… so not the tower failing first, but the top mount blowing out.
As you may know the rear towers in the GT4 are actually reinforced with a bonded steel cup.… you’ll see this is carried over into the 718 GT4 and Spyder from the pic…

Okay, so we have one failure confirmed. Would like to know firm statistics please. The way you describe this is as if it Is a regular occurrence.

Go and check the history of strut tower failure, mate. Then you’ll know why this is of interest.

I said early reports because I saw multiple posts about a possible event. I posted here for the good of the community…

Fair enough, but without stats we really don’t know how prevalent this is etc.

After so much bad publicity regarding the strut tower failures on the 981 GT4 you'd think Porsche would have pulled out all the stops to prevent the same happening on 718s..The front tower failures on 981GT4s were hardly surprising when you see how they are fixed to the aluminium bulk head..IIRC they were extremely rare instances on GT4s which had been lowered and used hard on track..

That Spyder is bad, could have caused a nasty accident, have Porsche commented on it? I do hope the owner isn’t being made to foot the bill.

Thanks TDT - massively appreciated.

My Spyder is at the dealership now for an issue with the seat, I’ll see if I can speak to the technician and ask about this on collection.

From previous posts, knowledge etc on the 981 issue - is this something Porsche covers?

E.g. if happens at speed and the car hits the deck? Potentially the damage could be huge

I'm not sure about that.. car is 12days old apparently.... and the owner says they did not hit anything...

although as Taffy mentions... all previous cases have been down to hitting something very hard at speed - whether on road or track.

The issue is that other components should fail first before the strut tower...What we can see in this case is exactly that...

The Top mount broke... not the strut tower - as was initially thought in the original reports ... I'd say this is down to the bonded steel cup reinforcement that is in the rear towers of all GT4 981 and 718, and now 718 Spyder.
I've always questioned when they have not used the same solution for the front....

keeps drivers honest on track days and off the kerbs ;-)

It's not going to happen in normal driving unless you drive into a kerb at 60 mph head on.
DEALERS won't want to talk about it or know much sadly.

you see less of these blow outs now as people are aware not to ride the kerbs on track days.

Depends if it was modified.

Interesting post from TDT and as stated if anyone is concerned they can quite easily find out more relevant information, their call.

Of no immediate concern as usual until the exact circumstances and likely innapropriate modifications to the particular car are known.
