718 Engine - This made me think...
Discussion
Excluding the engine, that's the positive 718 Vs 981 comments I'm hearing
I've just looked at my local Porsche dealer (Belfast) and they have no used 718's apart from ones with delivery miles (customers not completing on their orders?). I can't blame OPC's not wanting 2 year old 718's on the premises. How can they sell new ones when punters see the depreciation first hand?

I'll add, having driven the range, my money would go on the base model. I personally didn't feel any performance difference between the base, S or GTS.
Sure things pass the window quicker, but I actually felt like the 2.0 was the smoother engine. On the 2.5 unit you can feel the variocam doing it's thing and I didn't like it.

Prices on used 718 Cayman 2.0 are starting to get silly. Lots hovering at very low £30k like this one that's barely 2 years old.

That looks to be a fairly basic spec. Presuming it’s not cheap for a reason @£39,878 new or thereabouts down to 33k in two years seems pretty normal to me, say 83% of the original list. At that same run rate (so presuming depreciation is not less in year three) I’m getting a price that’s 74% of the original list which seems unremarkable.http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2019...
If that’s ‘silly’ then fill your boots. You must also remember the market is dead right now, these ‘losses’ are inconsequential compared to some of the high end stuff.
Don’t leave it too long though, by the spring I would almost certainly expect a market bounce.

There's loads of others at similar prices with other specs.
Markets been dead since summer. I wouldn't rely on spring bounce as details of the flat 6 718's (if any) will be known soon
Yes but cost wise will be nearly double a base 2.0 and not so readily available?Markets been dead since summer. I wouldn't rely on spring bounce as details of the flat 6 718's (if any) will be known soon
Whichever way you look at it, used 718 and 981 values are converging fairly quickly. That must be a first for Porsche for current and older model pricing.
The 718 is obviously a nice tight package, lots talk about the improved EPS etc. It's good value no matter how you look at it if you like to own 'fresh' 2 year old cars IMO

I wouldnt disagree with that, plenty of potential owners looking to own a Porsche for very little? He loves the new 2.0lt. That little power plant must make the car feel nimble surely?
Anyone dailying a 987 will be more than happy with the interior uplift on even a basic 718.
It's becoming a compelling argument.
Personally, I still like the rawness of the 987 but it's not my daily.
The 718 is a beautiful car in the flesh and looks more expensive than it is. That will be enough to get many over the 'noise' thing.

Think it's a heavier car actually.Dunc.
I remember when we added intercooler to my Starion Turbo in the 90's how heavy all the 'gear' was. Holding the turbo alone in your hand - heavy lump of metal back then. It may be slightly better now
Local OPC has a few nearly new 2.0lt 718's. I'm really waiting for an excuse to try one. They had a well priced GT4 before Xmas that only lasted a few days. That would've been my excuse to visit.
Once the 718's start to come out of warranty en masses will be interested to see what modding culture develops. If you're prepared to accept slightly worse fuel economy I'd imagine some of the issue will be sorted in time (mapping, early revs on boost, exhaust) but it'll never sound like a screaming f6 but that's cool to in its own way too.

I'm not sure many people are going to want to risk grenading an expensive engine - these things aren't oriental hatch-backs and it's not as if Porsche won't sell you a quicker car if you want one.Base 718 with PDK is a brilliant car for the money IMO - PDK keeps that modest engine nicely on the boil.
With the manual transmission I'd want a gruntier "S".

For lads that already have a nice flat 6 (like a GT for the weekends) a 2yo base 718 would be a good fresh daily that sips fuel and gives a few years cheap maintenance.
Shhhhhh…. Be careful or you'll wake up the dinosaurs. I prefer my 981 CS and if not wanting an F4T makes me a dinosaur I don’t care
