I've been eagerly awaiting this car for a couple of years having missed out on the 981. I saw it at FOS last week and I'm really smitten and now to top it off nicely my OPC has confirmed I will receive an allocation early next year. Hurrah...!

However, nothing in life is that simple and I now find myself with an unexpected Dilemma. I reslly never thought I would actually get an allocation!! I am currently driving an 18 month old Audi R8 RWS. A model that is is scarce (32 in UK) it seems to have been forgotten already. It is a terrific road car. Hugely fast, comfortable, beautifully built and a with a fantastic drive train.

Should I really chop it in for this new GT4 just to scratch that Porsche GT itch.

I would appreciate any points if view
If your coming from an R8 RWS and want to scratch a the GT itch, I'd say you should be a GT3 not a GT4.

Keep the Audi and take delivery of the GT4 then decide which car you prefer.

If you prefer the Audi (god forbid!) you will be able to sell the GT4 at a tax free profit (although this could well be substantially reduced if a likely 10% Brexit surcharge is added) without being hung drawn and quartered as you will be a genuine non flipper.
Good advice if the chap can afford to hold both cars for a short time, but in what possible sense would he be a genuine non flipper if he sells the car quickly for a profit?

No axe to grind, just genuinely curious about your thought process here.
Because the sole reason for selling the car is because he prefers the Audi as opposed to simply selling for the 'flipping premium'.
I agree, he’s looking at his options if he keeps the two. If the r8 is his preferred car and he can’t keep the 2 the gt4 has to go, I wouldn’t say that’s flipping that’s a car enthusiast exploring imo.

If it helps, my OPC got 2 Spyder's for 2019 , not sure how many GT4’s, but I think it was 3.

My Spyder build month is September ; deposit was placed ages ago at £k3

I was debating GTSM or Crayon ; lucked out as there was a 992 in Crayon & a 718 Boxster in the showroom to compare when I was finalising my spec.

However, there was also a 991.2 Targa in Miami which caught my eye that I just kept going back to ......

So....... I’ve gone Miami, which I’m amazed at, as I’ve never liked it in photos, but in real life I absolutely loved it (I saw it inside the showroom and outside in natural light) I’m hoping it will work well on the Spyder - guess I’ll find out soon enough smile

Here’s my spec ;

A couple of quotes from Australia journalist review.

“But the new flat six blows the 3.8-litre engine in previous versions out of the water — the new Cayman GT4 has 26kW more, the Spyder 33kW.”

“Sports cars don’t come much better than this near perfect pair from Porsche.”

Colour not decided, all I know is it’s this year at the moment as spec isnt locked. I would imagine later part of the year from the convention I had.

Can’t wait

Oh dear sounds like the clutch is now too light presumably to satisfy the Snowflakes....
Probably gone to the same weight as the 991.2 which I'll be honest I found better than the GT4 and especially the 997.2 GT3..

It's still not that light I would think..
I said before the 981 GT4 imo is the perfect clutch and gearbox in terms of weighting and action whereas the 991.2 GT3 is too light (clutch) for a contemporary GT Porsche especially as overall the car is quite hardcore.

As for the 997 GT3 the clutch is the opposite and a pita imo.
I’m delighted about the clutch - I love the clutch feel on the 991.2 GT3 and I only sold my 981 Spyder because the clutch gave me a bad back - too heavy for a DD IMHO smile

If the clutch is a little lighter is this such a bad thing? For the ones who will use the car on a daily more frequent bases, this will surely make it more usable for the average joe.

Imo the clutch on a Porsche GT should be not too heavy and not too light but I appreciate we all like different weights and some may have hip/knee issues too.

But lets rememberwe are not driving a soporific Audi here rather a relatively hardcore Porsche GT and I prefer a challenge and to work a bit for my driving rewards...

Fair comment, let’s hope Porsche haven’t over VW it!

Two things that the 981 GT4 gets criticised for, the heavy clutch and the long gearing. Neither have bothered me in 12k miles of driving.

The clutch thing I really don't get at all, unless owners really do have weak leg muscles. perhaps years of cycling and sport have given me stronger leg muscles than other drivers, but come on this is GT product, man up.

And the long gearing, far too much fuss made about this. Just drive the thing on a mountain road for several hours and use 2nd, 3rd and occasionally 4th, it's joyful!

I'll be interested to hear more about the 718 version, but initial reports seem to imply it is a slight softer product and easier to extract the performance from. Not sure if it's for me and I have been early awaiting its arrival, but I some how feel far less excited about it than I did when the original one arrived. Now where did I put Jens number...?

Re: Colour, you should suggest that the only way to decide is for Porsche to fly you to, say Scotland to drive all the available options. As a bonus you could write us an unbiased (non-Vlogger) review that tells us like it is. wink

GT3 Touring is a dream to drive compared to the 981 Spyder. The clutch in the 981 almost had me in traction! Perhaps I’m just getting old....

“But it’s changed. No longer as guttural and warbly as before, and although it pulls more healthily across the rev range, with fewer peaks and troughs, it’s slightly less charismatic. And the noise has a synthetic edge. The switchable sports exhaust does make a big difference, pumping up the bass. Can’t decide whether it’s a good thing or exacerbates the sense of falseness.”

Jesus Christ give them a nasp F6 after three years of moaning and they still whinge about the sound. smile

I've modified mine to make it quieter for track work ... no valves ... more power ... but the quality of the sound (if that's what turns you on) is second to none.

For me, it's quieter in track that's important ... I'm at the PCGB Donnington day in couple of weeks.

Just can’t keep away can you... whinging about whinging. I’d take it over and F4T, I would be the better car for what I want from a car.
Better than any 4cyl 718 wink
