If the £211,000 Speedster has a mainly manual roof I can;t see a £70000+ Spyder getting anything other than what the 981 version received especially as it looks to be exactly the same roof again and why fix something that wasn't broke and why change the ethos of super light sports car in Porsche speak confused
This.

The new model will also have a particulate filter so simply cannot sound quite as throaty as the old one.

Also it’s surely going to cost a bit more. I think the main reason to upgrade from my perspective would be if there are any steering improvements (likely) and gearing (unlikely due to emissions?).

I’m probably just going to keep mine. I certainly don’t crave more power.

We’ve had peak combustion engine cars for now I think.... only other aspects of the car will improve.

I think for the Cayster platform I agree, however the Speedster engine seems pretty cool and should make it into the 992 GT3. I think high end NASP may be OK for the next runs of 911s, but as I've said before I'm really not sure about the 718 GT4 and Sypder powerplants.

Wonder how many OPC’s will get ....looks like lthere were 230 odd 981’s.
Yep 227 981s.

Estimate for 718 is for c300 Spyders c800 GT4s.
looking at "how many left" website , it seems there were 229 spyder981 (when looking under new registrations 80+149)
now there are exactly 200 cars , so 29 have already left for overseas markets it seems?

Quite likely....a fair few cars go to RHD Asian markets...especially the rarer cars. A lot of new cars were finding there way there unofficially via brokers but that’s been cracked down on in the last six months.

The Spyder on this site is likely UK new https://www.europeancarimports.co.nz/recent-import...

I know there is a 987.2 Spyder here in NZ since close to new and I have one on a ship to NZ now. I also had an ex UK Cayman R and my 986 is ex UK as well. Others in our group have 997 Turbos, Cayman S etc , all ex UK.

Finally picked it up today . Drive back from OPC a bit unnerving with wind noise and rattles ..... Got home and got the roof off , fantastic ! 1st impressions are great . Short shift box excellent , steering spot on , power and noise is enough for B road fun .

This is now my car, I'm thinking of selling if anyone is interested.
Lightweight spec of manual gearbox, short shift, carbon bucket seats, spyder alloys, pse and no air-con.
Its now done 17000 miles and just been serviced at Porsche Nottingham. OPC warranty runs until end of the month but Porsche Notts couldn't find anything wrong to claim on it!
Just had an MOT, the car has never even had a single advisory.
Anyone looking for a really clean 987.2 spyder low mileage at a good price, the above car is now for sale.
Previous 2 owners both regular members on here!

Very nice James, hope you're good buddy...

Re electric roof, how can it possibly be, what with the huge rear clamshell? Not too sure about that one.
I doubt the 718 Spyder is going to sound anywhere near as good as the 981 Spyder. With the roof down, anywhere near wa wall, its hilarious smile

I'm off to tour Scotland for a few days in mine tomorrow. 10k miles already, lots more by the time I return.
If anyone see's a red Sagaris, blue Catherham 420R and a GT silver Spyder, come and say hello... smile

speaking to dealer today still seems uncertain whether launch will be at FOS; still issues with stage 2 of particulate filter regs or similar

Question for 981 Spyder owners....

If you could change anything on the car (within reason - no ridiculous suggestions...) what would it be?

Personally I would like the alcantara steering wheel to have a thicker rim - the standard wheel just feels thin in my hands (I do have big hands!) when compared with other cars. Would love it to be approx. +20% thicker.

Funnily enough my wife says the same thing..!.....anywaaaay back to the 981 Spyder which mine has the leather steering wheel which is a perfect size and thickness for my hands..I have broad boxer hands but quite short fingers..
The one upgrade i will do on mine if i don't get the 718 Spyder will be to fit either OZ Superforgiata or Forgeline lightweight 19'' wheels..These will slightly lower the CoG and lower the much too high gearing which will increase torque at the wheels..

Pardon my ignorance but would not changing the diameter of the wheels/tyres bugger up the electronic systems such as PSM, Traction Control etc ?

But if you were running 19s it would probably be sensible imo to use a taller sidewall tyre to get back approximately to the overall oem wheel+tyre diameter and there wouldn't be much real gearing impact. Possible of course to put on a smaller wheel/tyre but that's going to be a bit more involved to make sure everything works as it should in that case as per post above.

i have had my spyder since new. march 16.
steering wheel is fine for me. i have had wheels that were too thick in the past (clio 200)

what would i change? well i would like front lift , which was never an option.
and leather seat centres would be nice , preferable to alcantara imo.

oh , and the exhaust pipes . should have optioned the stainless steel pipes (or whaterever they were called)

the new one might have more power , but for me , it is something that is not needed.
my name is in the hat , so will see when the time ,finally ,comes when the spec is revealed.

I've had a couple of my cars' steering wheels re-done by Royal Steering Wheels; superb job every time (I have no affiliation etc).
If you want to keep your original one, then maybe look at buying a replacement secondhand wheel & sending that to Royal to do? Then just put your own back on if you ever move the car on?

With regards the wheels i don't think i've given it enough thought regarding screwing up the speedo etc..I loved my Spyder at Silverstone on Monday despite being underpowered and undergripped compared to a lot of cars out there..At least there's room to move out of harms way..
Really curious to see what Porsche will do with the upcoming 718 Spyder.

Whilst good fun, the Spyder was way too soft for the track IMV, but lovely runner up through the hills. Gearing could have been shorter, especially 2nd.
