Collected Spydie yesterday, somehow managed to navigate my way around all the thunderstorms and rain without coming across a drop…
Collection

Back home

Went out for a run with my mate and his 911 before visiting my 78 year old ex neighbour, who’s just finishing off his MGB GT restoration. A complete nut and bolt, ground up resto…in his garage, including 6 sprayed coats of cellulose paint….

M8ke had just fitted his new Walnut dashboard..

Then he played a bit of electric guitar….which he also refurbishes….and sells on EBay…

Then it all went a bit mad….. Reg turned up…

In a Model T….that he’d restored…& rebodied himself as a project….

So….to home…feeling slightly inadequate & in awe of two gentleman of ‘experienced’ years who have the knowledge, skill and energy to do this type of restoration work…

Tucked up

All in all…..a good day smokin

It's amazing these 981 Spyders are 10+ years old now. It doesn't feel like long ago I was spec'ing one up and doing the Spyder launch at the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone.

What a strange time it was with the economy and everything else at that time. In the end, it's another one that got away and I never ordered. Still one of the best handling cars I've ever driven if spec'd correctly.

I should have checked this thread a couple of weeks back!
Well, I’m glad you’re enjoying the car Mr Vert! I’d just got it all hunky dorey, and well, decided it was just too small for merolleyesrolleyes so bought another 911
Anyway, the guys at Ashgoods didn’t hesitate in doing the deal, so glad it’s gone to (another) good home!
I also had the geo done by Suspension Secrets, so the handling is spot on.
Are you going to Silverstone Classic? May see you there
Graham

Hi Graham…

Thanks for posting, always nice to hear from a previous owner, especially one who obviously looked after a car I’ve just acquiredsmile

I can tell it’s been set up well, I was going to get the car up to COG in Atherstone but it really needs nothing adjusting in the handling department. Had a good spirited drive yesterday and it is superb to sling through the bends…proper fun!

I can’t believe I’ve not tried a Spyder before now, had an ‘R’ which I loved, it my wife hated the Carbon seats so we didn’t get out much in it. The ‘tramps hat’ (Clarkson’s description) of a roof always put me off, but I’ve quickly realised it’s way better than the journo’s negative descriptions, motorway speeds with the roof up are no problem whatsoever, so our trips to Angouleme / Spa / Pau etc won’t be a problem.

I think this is my 10th or 11th Porsche now and even after two days of ownership…I think it might just be my favourite…and that’s amongst some pretty stiff competition incl GT3’s! It’s the perfect size for the roads around here, has the perfect balance of power / weight and all the sensations get straight to the driver.

It also feels quite special…not easily achieved by a car in this price bracket.

Love it biggrin

Hoping to be at Silverstone on Sunday, although we’re at a track day on Saturday with our little S1 Elise, so it might depend on how late we get back…if we’re going I’ll ping you a PM from here, would be nice to meet.

Cheers thumbup

Congrats on the Spyder MrV, looks lovely clap

ETA - we’re at the Classic all weekend, hope to bump into you.
Regrettably I won’t be in the R due to a small mountain of camping gear, beer, food and bikes.

Ex press car. Was in evo mag and autocar.V high miles for a spyder.
Probably lots of owners as well by now.
No air con or stereo is always gonna be controversial as well.
Pick from the above why it aint sold!
Still a lovely car though.

That's easy

You looked at the pictures and got excited although perhaps glossed over the one showing the gapping holes

If there is no AC does it still have the same switches for the fan?

Is that not the car Singh911 bought late 2019 early 2020 after it had sat at the dealers for months unsold ?

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Edit to add : Yes it is, and it looks like he's sold it and moved onto a mid-engined V8 Prancing Horse ...

I was about to say the same - sure he adapted some form of navigation into the car as we messaged each other at the time. Which F has he moved on to now?
I think this Spyder looks great in red but arguably a low 60’s car in reality

Sounds like an F430, not sure if it's coupe or spider.
Have to agree, the 981 Spyder looks great in red, and the PCCB's and seats are a bonus (if the car were a keeper, I'd pull the seats and flog 'em, and fit a set of perfectly trimmed Pole Positions in their place) eek

Is the lack of OE sat nav really such a deal breaker with the likes of the excellent Waze available these days ?

Don't the folding buckets have electric height adjust, then you slap a plastic bin in the dash in the name of weight saving? Regardless, none of the interior looks in any way "light weight" or pared back-the lack of radio in a fairly snazzy interior just looks odd.

The buying demographic has changed massively.

I never listened to the radio in any of my 996/997 GT2/3’s and the 964 RS’s didn’t have a radio.
Even when I used my GT2 as a daily driver, I didn’t use the radio, my entertainment was derived from keeping it on the straight and narrow, shiny side up, whilst doing regular stupidly high speed dashes between N.Wales and the Midlands.

I never missed having sat nav in any of those cars, and prior to my first 996 GT3 ownership in 2004/5, I’d never missed having air con in a Porsche 911 either.

The cars built at Stuttgart today, are very different from those built even 15 years ago, the delete option for satnav, aircon and in-car entertainment in their GT cars is really nothing more than a sop to owners aspiring to own the cars they used to build.
Few if any owners choose the option, it’s only Porsche’s very savvy PR department that does so, and as we all know, they’re not too concerned about the value of their demonstrators come sale time ...

Radio, PCM and to a lesser extent AC not necessary but a harder sell when most other cars have them I think. It’s the fixed buckets that have the electric height adjustment. And I think red suits the car - but possibly I’m not impartial smile
