Hi fellow piston heads.. A friend has emailed me with the following.. Can anyone advice:

Porsche Boxster S 3.4
2007

Engine ceased for no apparent reason. Received message on dash saying check engine take to workshop. 2 mins later severe vibration, engine cut out and thick black smoke followed by white smoke.

Told it needs a new engine and that it will cost up to 10k. Also told that models up to 2008 have known engine issues and that only fixed by Porsche after that year. Spoke to another garage that Alexander David put me in touch with for a reconditioned one and told it will cost up to 9k all in. They said they'd take car off me for 2.5k as is after they take a look at bodywork. HELP!!
