I had a GTS from 2000 - 06, in Germany. Was My bedroom poster car as a teenager ( 928S). They were (relatively) expensive in the southern hemisphere.
They are a fabulous car, comfortable all day at above 200km/h. Regularly exceeded 250 km/h, so easy-going/ comfy that my wife slept at 260 km/h.
Problems I had: 1 - replaced steering rack, expensive
2 - ECU, expensive
3 - Rear wing came off, rusted internals, poor choice of mild steel parts.
4 - Lost half the plastic under-motor shield at autobahn speed. I had bottomed out through Karusell a week earlier.
5 - a corrosion issue with the brakes. OPC mechanic was reluctant to believe me until I could demonstrate the problem. Turned out to be something involving dissimilar metals reacting. They hadn't previously experienced it.
6 - For any alignment work - go to a specialist.
Money no object - wonder if it is possible to upgrade engine power & mate with a modern auto/dsg 'box? 500 hp with 8 sp Touareg box would be fun.
I once drove to the tip with an oven in the back ( hatch open),guy at the tip was equally surprised & eager to know about the car. First child ( & buggy & camping gear) no problem.

Brake backing plates (and squeal) a common problem but fixable if you know what to do. ECU's now repairable in UK for around £400.They are a fabulous car, comfortable all day at above 200km/h. Regularly exceeded 250 km/h, so easy-going/ comfy that my wife slept at 260 km/h.

That's good to know. A new ECU cost me about 2500 Euro, at the time. Porsche Zentrum didn't fix things - they replaced with new parts..The brakes issue I had was intermittent shuddering.
I have a GTS 5-spd, another GTS based race car and I am currently restoring a one owner from new 1989 S4 5spd. I used to own a 1984 S2 Auto which was then converted to manual.
A well sorted 5-speed car is a joy to drive. It will never have the rifle bolt change of an NSX, but the extra ratio really does wake up the beast, adding more to the dual personality. People say it’s a GT car - but it’s not. It’s a sports car too.
I will not waffle on and on how good 928s are. But I will say that faced with the choice of selling my GT3 or my 928 GTS 5-spd, the GT3 will be gone quicker than you can say “no way!”...
Value - there is no such thing as a cheap 928. Depends what you want, but I would say that if you aren’t prepared to do some work yourself, then you should buy something at the top end of the price scale... £15k buys you a lot of deferred maintenance. If the budget allows I would be ok the phone to this chap...

No affiliation with the seller, but I have seen it at Paul Anderson’s workshop while work was being done on it and it’s actually better than what the pictures show. This car and my GTS, which went through the same process are possibly the closest you could be to buying a new 928 at present. My GTS isn’t for sale...

928 motorsports will sell a 6 speed manual conversion kit for $9000 that requires a C5 Corvette Z06 donor. The first thought that came to mind if I bought a Z06, shouldn't I just call it a day?
If you are so unhappy with your 928 perhaps just move it on? Having owned a Lorinser R129 - 500 - I think that when they work they are great, but when they go wrong they are even worse than the 928 to repair. Even more complex and overengineered for the sake of it. From an era when things werent very reliable. And a MB 500 would not even see which way a sorted 928 has gone...
And yes, a C5 Z06 is a great car. But so it should be, as it is 20yrs newer as design/concept than the 928, whcih was conceived in the early 1970s. If you were to compare a 928 and a 'Vette from the 1980s - come on, the Vette was a slow, underpowered POS... Be objective...

An acquaintance of mine has two GTS's, a red one and a blue one - he's been looking to add a white one for ages so some people appreciate them
To celebrate this thread, I went to play in mine last night - only to get "Coolant Warning" on the dash. So no Aldi run in Der Kaiser
I am hoping it is just one of the heater feeds - the engine is still box fresh from it's rebuild.
If it is the heater, I'll swap out the control valve as well, as it is sticking and stopping the air con running cool. £25 from Merc, £120 from OPC!! In fact, it might be be the HCV as they are prone to cracking.

Like I said, I want to give it one more chance before I decide if I want to move it on. It was a poster car for me as I kid so I'm actually fonder of it when I've not driven it than I am when I have. Aside from the hydraulic top cylinders and the odd plastic bits around the mirror, the R129 should be utterly reliable and durable. The Z06 example is simply being mentioned because it's required for a 6 speed manual conversion kit that someone is selling for $9000 plus donor (bonkers). Of course you cant compare a Z06 to a 928, but as far as period performance, the pre 32 valve 928S that came to the US was 'smogged' and made about 230hp. Performance was comparable to a regular C4 Corvette of the era. The GTS was built in the same era as the ZR1 which could pretty much smoke everything at the time.
Anyway, I'm not stting on your car. I have a V8V and an SL55 sitting right next to each other and I feel much the same about the V8V as I do about the 928. I agree that rennlist is a great source of help for the 928 community and I know a couple of guys in DFW who are real contributors to that group.

What you want is the heater valve from a 2000's era ford ranger (here's one I have around the house) which fits right in. The heater valve in the 928 (same as a 190E) is crappy and never fully closes which means that you'll never get great A/C. The ranger valve is about 1000 times better made and looks like a part that's made for Porsche, not Aldi.Edited by alabbasi on Friday 19th February 17:49

Ok folks.
Sorry for the radio silence I’ve been researching in the background
The latest one I’ve shown an interest in has 8 owners which sounds like a lot to me
What does the massive say?
My GTS has had one from new and still required a full on bare metal/interior out/engine/chassis off restoration because despite looking after it, the PO hammered it on his Dorset-London and London-Zug commute. Sorry for the radio silence I’ve been researching in the background

My ex-German LHD GTS had 220k on the clock when I bought it and 9 owners and was super reliable. One fuse and one fuel pump was all went wrong in another 60k road miles before I built a race car out of it...
Buy on condition and recent maintenance, not on what has happened in 1990 and whether a lord was its first owner...
