C2, it's so much more fun than the 930 but nowhere nearly as much as event to drive as the 930

My perfect air-cooled 911 would be a 930 for crossing Europe that changes into a 964 when I reach the mountains

Majority of my Porsche driving miles is exactly this not driving around congested UK roads so I'd strongly suggest you drive both and decide for yourself which is the car for you

Very pretty. I really like the targa on a wide body.

If you have a time warp SSE or turbo at £90k I'd rather have the car than the cash.
Personally I wouldn’t .... Well not an SSE.

I owned one back in around 2010, G50 box if mem serves, paid £15K for it and let it go very quickly ... I thought it slow and even back then not a great 911 .... maybe I felt a little bit of a fraud in it, all show and no go. Previous to it I’d owned an SC and a 3.2 and both were IMO far better cars.

Never did buy the turbo (at £15K) from Northway a couple of years earlier..... now that was a missed opportunity; not for rise in values .... just that it was the iconic 911 of its day and I’d loved to have sampled the boost.

Out of the two (if now I could afford either) .... it would be the turbo any day.

How things change over time. An SSE targa was the most unloved 911 on the planet back in the noughties and now I see they go for serious dosh.

They're art and nostalgia. No way prices match the drive at first glance but the overall ownership experience is so rewarding. Sold this stunner for a prince's sum. A breathed on 993 C2 upgraded by best in the biz to what I would describe as a smidge better than RS spec. Best 911 I've driven. Was I right to take the equivalent of two 550 Marenello based on the drive alone? I've not driven a 550 but took the money in a flash.

Sold for well specced brand new 992 C2S money for an old timer in this condition. Doesn't seem unfair to me when I look at it this way.

Thanks wozy and mach.

I've never driven a 911 and I have resisted them for years. I'm thinking of taking the plunge. Initially I was thinking a 930 but I'm starting to like 964/ 993's. I'm used to cars with lots of power so its got to be a turbo. Its very different to the other cars I have which is part of what interests me too. I thought about the SSE as there was a beautiful fully restored one for sale but I know it would be too under powered. I'm thinking of bidding on this one:

I went from a 3.2 Carrera which I loved to a 993 C4 varioram which I hated. Partly as I expected it to be so much better, but it lost the true old school 911 feel and the performance wasn't a great step on. I ended up back in another 3.2 Carrera sometime later.

I now have a 996 turbo X50 which isn't as cool as the older cars but has all the handling and performance you'd ever need.

Really is a case of going and trying the cars as some go feel very old, heavy and agricultural (part of the charm) whilst others are more modern, but may still feel old and outdated v the latest tech cars.

It's a nice journey to have just try a few and then focus on a model.

You.porsche guys have been great in sharing your thoughts and knowledge thank you. My feeling now is that I need a 964 turbo. I can't really stretch to a 3.6 so would have to be a 3.3. The two below caught my eye.

The 930 looks amazing but I already have the eighties supercar in my testarossa and I need to think about my use of it.

I remember Harry Metcalfe commented his 930 had neither the performance nor the 'event' of his Testarossa so he sold it. He also wanted the 80's 'supercar garage'. However, I think it significant he's only ever had 2 Porsches in his garage and didn't keep either of them very long. I guess outright power didn't come into it too much as he says the 3.2 Club sport is the most fun of all the 911s - even against the 2.7RS.

Do you want a Turbo for the power or is it the manner of power delivery? I have 3 911's and a 308 QV and would be hard pressed to choose between them as they're all so different. It's certainly not about outright power anymore - must be getting oldsmile - I get just as much joy from my 308 as my GT3. Though track would be an entirely different matter.

It's also worth mentioning there can be a big difference to the way they drive even from the same model. My 993C4S was transformed when I fitted Bilsteins. Would a 993 Turbo give more? I don't know really. The C4S is plenty quick enough for the road and it's a joy ringing its neck out with that lovely nasp engine. A Turbo might perhaps be too fast? It really depends on how you drive and what you look for in a car. If you're lucky enough to have several cars then you can cross all bases. Actually you can't because there's lots of cars I still want but also don't want to sell what I've got!!

It also takes time to get to know a car. And it takes even longer for an air cooled 911. Sometimes I get into my 3.2 and I think, Christ, what an old bag of nails! Then after a few miles I remember what it's all about. Interestingly I never get that feeling in the 993. It's always an event..

That red one is stunning.

The Blue one looks nice too, a bit more understated and should be fresh as a daisy.

Absolutely, its my first classic and its going to be a keeper. Will update this next week. Have wanted a red 964 for a long time but that blue one ticks a lot of boxes too and sounds v looked after. Are you going to bid?

I have a 1989 930 G50 turbo as well as a 997 turbo manual, so have decent perspective on the feel and performance. I also have a couple of older cars with powerful V8s, and get to drive a V10 RS6 Plus belonging to a family member, so there is a lot to compare between.

930 is hands down my favourite car of all. I love everything about it, including the turbo lag and all of the idiosyncrasies, of which there are many.

For me it had to be the G50 car as with all that lag it's easier to keep on boil with shorter ratios and the extra gear. However, once in 5th the gearlever presses against your left knee (I suppose it wouldn't be an issue in a LHD car), so little things like that are part of the "charm". The absurd layout of the buttons on the dashboard, all different types and sizes, the triple climate control system (completely separate controls in completely different places for fresh air, for heating and for the AC). The running on after you switch it off, which feels completely wrong, but is in fact the Delayed Ignition Cutoff. The fact that it will accelerate on boost even if you keep the throttle steady, etc., etc.

It is still a very fast car even compared to my 997 turbo, but the difference is that you have to keep it on boost. If you are off boost it feels super slow and than BANG, it launches and you're doing crazy speeds before you know it. It requires a different style of driving and often being in a gear lower than you'd do in anything modern. If you drive it like a normal car it will probably either feel very underwhelming or hurt you. It's incredibly involving and satisfying. No assistance of any kind, no power steering, no ABS (there is a brake servo), so it's just up to you.

A good example will feel more solid than anything modern. It feels like built from granite. The doors close like a safe (compared to the somewhat plasticky feel of the more modern cars). In my opinion the main negative is the Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection. It's a convoluted system and quite tricky to set up right. I've recently had two specialists and a Porsche OPC admit they didn't know how to work on it.

Anyhow, any questions feel free to ask.

I have been looking for a red 964 for a few years now, originally after a C2 but saw this car and absolutely loved it. Currently driving an e tron as my daily since selling my c63s 18 months ago so need something fast and authentic. Test drove a 992 but just felt that a classic would be so much more enjoyable and just look at it! Also being born in the 80s helped cement the want for this car..Its going to get fully detailed ASAP, the bodywork from the videos looks superb, cannot wait!

I remember chatting to a delightful lady who owned 22 Porsches! She was a fanatic. Her collection, if I recall, ranged from a 356 to a 997 GT3 RS. She drove them all regularly too. I asked her which was her favourite. Without hesitation she said she enjoyed driving her 930 the most

Nice...

Looks like there is a load of caster in the front, so with no power steering I expect that gets seriously heavy!!

Not as much as you'd think. Combination of low weight at the front and a largish steering wheel, it's not way better than most other non-assisted steering cars I've driven.
