Old aircooled have a lovely understated elegance don’t they? Nice thing about 911K is it is based on the original 911ST.

Collected it today and it is now tucked up in the garage utterly filthy (Tuthill coated the underside in protective coating against the salt).

Just epic. Everything I wanted it to be and more. I like a loud car, and this is indeed loud! smile I might reconsider my decision not to have some sound absorbent material behind the rear bulkhead. But it came with a pair of rally headsets which was a lovely touch.

I was too excited to take many photos, there are so many details so I really need to clean it and spend a few hours with a macro lens. In the meantime here are some for those who are interested…

The colour scheme is just about perfect, enjoy every mile in it. If you get bored of it or think it may be slightly under used over the winter or just need someone to take it out once a week to keep the battery topped up, I am available at very short notice.
+1
Gents thank you for your kind and selfless offers, which of course I will keep in mind smile

lovely, have fun with it while its dry and not to cold temps.

btw how does such gearstick combo shifts? is it precise/short?(although a long stick) and not sloppy like some old cars have? I guess not modern porsche 911 click clack short, but just wondering, as I see more builds with such sort gearstick box, I forgot how it was when I had my old 1976 Carrera 3.0 long time ago with its standard setup and rubber sock or how you call that.

So I have no idea :-) is it precise nice shift or ?
It is a 915 gearbox with 6 speeds and so it has different feel than say a G50 or more recent Porsche boxes with short, stubby levers and a “snickety” change action. It is however quite precise and once you get to know it, the shifts slot in.

Because reverse works off a separate lever, you have to be very much awake when doing reversing manoeuvres as otherwise it is possible to engage reverse and a forward gear at the same time. But it is a small compromise to get 6 forward gears into the lightweight magnesium casing.

Cheers beer

The car was weighed with half a tank (50l) as 845kg.

Been out again today, it is dirty and I will need to clean the poor thing tomorrow morning.

The engine was run in on the dyno and then in the mule car with the gearbox. That said, the roads are cold and wet and perhaps unpredictable with ice patches or fallen leaves under overhanging trees. So I am taking it sensibly and also getting to know the car. Absolutely loving it. A massive massive sensory experience.

Congratualtions - That looks absolutely fantastic, and even better with a bit of road grime on it. The detials are just sublime.

Tuthll aren't too far from me so often see their development cars running around. Also seen Richard out in the Cali-registered 911K - he doesn't hang around and the sound the thing makes is other worldly.
Richard can pedal!

When I collected mine there were two other 911K’s in the building - the gold car #1 on CA plates and then another in build which will be car #3. There are some wacky paint schemes coming as well, going to be fun to see some more cars and their owner’s ideas.

The engine is of course to many the party piece but it cannot be over stressed how important the light weight is. What this means for the way the car accelerates, turns and stops and how it feels in the driver’s seat. The trick dampers took a lot of work as Motion Control had nothing in their kitbag for such a light car and the result is to me as special (almost) as the engine, the way it rides and the way you can get the power down. Epic smile

you are going to have to buy another one just to keep it in its box now that you have got this one all dirty.
Lol, my wife is very understanding but she might not approve of this otherwise excellent plan!

I don’t mind a bit of jetwashing etc. a nice way to discover some details smile

I hope it's as epic to pilot as the spec, weight and drivetrain suggests it should be beer
You must have the patience of a saint to wait all this time, it looked beautiful in its virgin state, now it looks positively stunning !!
I stand corrected! smile

There is indeed something very good about seeing it covered in ste, because it brings some memories back. I was out most of the day with my wife. She refused the headset/intercom which I thought would lead to trouble later but it was all fine. Both of us however needed a cushion for some extra lumbar support. A fab day.

He certainly can! Overtook me off a roundabout heading in Banbury at quite a rate of knots and disappeared into the distance...

The weight (or lack of!) is incredible - My Caterham was about 550kg so this in seriously impressive.

Keep telling us all about it!
hehe

A properly set up, light powerful aircooled is a quick car especially in experienced hands.

Will get out and about tomorrow and also plan to get some more shots of all the details.

Thanks all!

Have been getting more used to the sound level in the cabin and even when I went out for a day with my better half, neither of us used these:

That said, we didn’t bother streaming music from “apple car play” either.

Hopefully the biblical rain will soon be gone and we will be back out in it.

Been enjoying the car to the max, it is totally immersive and a bit bonkers, every squirt of the throttle even to 6000 rpm just makes me laugh. The CR6ZZ’s give a fair amount of grip and you can get the power down on really poor surfaces. The joy of a properly set up “old” 911!

My attempts at in-car video are rubbish so far. I don’t think the inbuilt microphone on my gopro 7 black properly conveys the sound from the cabin. Any recommendations for solutions/external microphones?

I use this, you just need to buy a case for the gro pro that can accept it, works really well across the different cars I have and brings out the proper noise in my experience.

RØDE VideoMicro Compact On-camera Directional Microphone for Filmmaking, Content Creation and Location Recording https://amzn.eu/d/35hAyei

This case should be fine but double check:

Vlog Case Action Camera Housing Shell Vlogging Cage Frame with Cold Shoe Mount Compatible with GoPro Hero 7 6 5 Black for External Microphone & Pro 3.5mm Mic Adapter https://amzn.eu/d/g5bdqnb

  • you will also need the official gro pro 3.5mm to usbC adapter.

Thanks. I will look into this further! Henry Catchpole will no doubt do a video in the spring so I may just leave it to the professionals!

Andrew - congrats on the 911K. Interested in your comments re the CR6ZZs. Any opinion / points of comparison against TB15's? Struggling to get hold of TB15's where I am and wondered if the Avons would be a viable alternative. Thanks.
Thank you! I’ve not tried TB15’s though I know Richard considered them but opted for the Avons instead. He did tell me why but I can’t recall, will find out.

As my car was build #2, it is benefiting from updates because Tuthill are continuing to tweak the car.

Here are the rally timers, customised by Bremont with the Tuthill and 911K logos and mounted on a carbon plate.

Also the airbox for the heater has been replaced with a carbon one.

A few other updates to come in the near future.
