What an Epic day today. Went to the Kjeragbolten with a drive down to Lysebotn.

The village of Lysebotn is at the opposite end of the Lysefjord to the Pulpit Rock and there is a ferry to get there.

But we're here for this biggrin

Weather was raining from Stavanger and the first 30km a little mundane but as soon as we turned off the E39 on the 450....

O!M!G!

Fabulous roads, no traffic, amazing views around every corner.

Once on the Sirdalsveien / FV500 the road became single track. Again mostly traffic free but a lot of the road unsighted so enthusiasm had to be measured.

The last 9km are dreamy

Down to the village for a photo

And back up. Up is much more fun than down wink
Some experiments with modes basically said CST off was the best way to deal with the 1st gear hairpins. There was a surprising amount of traction that on one corner wasn't there and required a little luck and a change of underwear at the top.

The walk to Kjeragbolten was a different kind of challenge and totally worth it!

Absolutely magnificent day beer

Tomorrow will be massage time

Last day in Stavanger and an early start for the drive to Nurburgring

This time no deadline to meet, so a more leisurely trip planned
From Stavanger following https://www.nasjonaleturistveger.no/en/routes/ryfy... to Hara

From Hara to Eidford following https://www.nasjonaleturistveger.no/en/routes/hard...

From Haugastol to Oslo and a plan to sleep in a bed not the 599 nono

Only had a taste of Stavanger.
From a sauna and swim

To sushi at the Michelin star https://omakase.no/

And a ferry to a garden that's been created from rock
https://florogfjare.no/no
Before - excuse the picture of a picture

And now

So much to enjoy including the car culture. From the guy with a baby seat in his 1000bhp RS6 to the Nissan GT-R that gave me 1-2-3 on the horn.

biggrin

Norway I'm coming back

Just remember the tolls
https://ferde.no/en/invoice/how-to-pay-toll-in-nor...
And car parks
https://www.easypark.com/en-no
And the Norwegians are generally very strict concerning road regulations and the fines extreme

Morning Cake, people do that just to be annoying. They’re idiots. I once parked my 550 Maranello at the far end of a supermarket car park, no other cars within 15-20 metres. When I came out, some half-wit (obviously a bloke) had parked his car almost touching my driver’s side. I imagine it must have taken a fair bit of manoeuvring for him to get it so close. I had to get in the passenger side and clamber over the gear stick. Not the most edifying sight! smile

Hi SL550M, all three bays were empty when I parked after 10 last night. So he did the same as I could only just get the door open. Just enough to get the key in to put the window down.
Similarly embarrassing sight of an old man squeezing his legs past the door and belly over the door / window.

He must have had to climb out the passenger side of his car also unless he was a rake.

Made it to Ferrari Oslo
https://oslo.ferraridealers.com/en-GB/about-us

Where they had not one but two 812 competition in the show room biggrin

When the service department said they were too busy and come back Monday.

I did my best Puss in Boots

And they agreed to work overtime on a Friday. Thank you.

They found the same leaks, cleaned up and topped up.

It's a band aid, I know. And a very temporary and leaky one at that.

I'd been forced to miss out the Norwegian Tourist Routes for Ferrari in Oslo so headed to Copenhagen to stay with a friend.

Most of the next day was spent letting his family drive the 599, that car always leaves people with a smilebiggrin

Then the final leg to Nurburgring that I split with an overnight stop in Breman. Roads were relatively traffic free and once in Germany, with good long sessions of derestricted autobahn, arriving in Breman over an hour and a half ahead of Google Maps despite a stop for food.

Unfortunately the F1 transmission fluid level warning was up on the dash again.

Breman to Nurburgring was even quicker and I was lucky to have a rather mundane looking 5 series estate to keep me company and do a little formation flying. I was a little surprised that I was seeing 170 and 5 series was looking comfortable. Even picked up a UK registered white 6 series for a while.

From Münster / Dortmund way too much roadworks and increased traffic.

Turned off the motorway on to the 257, lovely road but speed restricted and we started to see lots of sporty cars. No other donkeys though.

Adneau

A stop to see Ferddy at http://www.special-brakes.de/ for new pads

I'd booked some ramp time with Richard at RingToys.

But decided to rent a Clio instead and leave the 599 with him to top up the F1 system.

Two reasons.
1. The F1 system leak is getting worse.
2. The brakes won't be sorted by pads.

A Ferrari engineer (used to work with them in Maranello and came from the aerospace industry) told me that the CCM discs are good until the surface feels like a cheese grater and you're seeing significantly increased pad wear. And this is where they're at.

"Because the angel on my right is hanging out with me tonight"

The 599 is going to sit out the Nurburgring this time and until I have new discs and the F1 system is full sorted.

I'm at the Scuderia S7 registration and I'm gutted to not have my 599 frown

They've put me in a fast group with an F12, GT3, GT4 and M2.

Spoke with the instructor and he said he can move me into a slower group.

Devastated weeping

Mine was with me at Silverstone yesterday at the Ferrari event, piling into Stowe on a slow down lap at about 100 in my 599 and this happened !

That's the left rear CCBD, took out the caliper, wheel and bits of the hub.

The car was fresh from a service and discs and pads were fine, it just kinda exploded, that's the biggest bit of carbon they found.

Luckily i was on a cool down, the previous lap i was hitting 150 slowing for Stowe and things could have been very different.

Ouch. That’s the trouble with carbon. It’s hard to test for impending failure and when it does fail, it fails spectacularly.

That’s why it isn’t a good material for making deep sea submarines.

Hi Hughesie, you're very very lucky, glad you're okay even if the car is not.

As ANOpax said not a good material and Ferrari CCM are the worst.

What's your plan to replace? OEM or aftermarket?

If you're thinking going steel (they have for rear also)
https://girodisc.com/ferrari-599-gtb-front-iron-ro...

Will you need new calipers also?

Had a fantastic two days with https://scuderia-s7.com/en/ at the Nurburgring. Weather has been perfect, along with a very eclectic group of people with a shared passion.

View from the terrace of the Porsche Lounge at the GP circuit for the evening dinner

I wasn't happy to be in the Clio especially given the machinery in the car park. Loads of GT and RS Porsches. Ferrari, AMG GT-R etc.
Including a KTM

And my training group

The little Clio wasn't easy to drive and took a lot of work to extract speed but she really helped me to improve my track knowledge.

By the afternoon I was really enjoying being in the Clio.

I was given a passenger lap in the latest GT3 RS and I was genuinely shocked at the level of skill and commitment required to drive it fast as well as the sheer grip, cornering and braking ability of the car

Even so, it's so good to have my 599 back.

I found myself trying to change gear and use the clutch in the 599. I guess the Clio left a mark biggrin

Def need 1 new caliper.

Looking at options currently.

Pref is:
Carbobrake
Surface Transform
Giro
OEM (most costly and least confident in now smile )

Also looking at a new set of wheels instead of replacing the damaged challenge wheel and selling on the 3 good wheels

Hi Hughesie,

For me:

The best choice is carbobrake. If we had been able to purchase together we could have bought the latest Gen 3 discs (continuous 3D weave) as they will not make for a single car.
All people I have met that use carbobrake give excellent reviews of quality and performance.

Only 2 problems with carbobrake
1. Waiting time
2. If you have the CCM warning light on your dash, only Ferrari can clear it and they will only do so if you purchase through the main dealer. (From my limited research)

Second choice is OEM. You will get a unique one time code to clear the CCM warning light. If you contact MDL they can get genuine CCM discs at reduced cost than the main dealer.
Only 2 problems.
1. Waiting time (because of the source / deal)
2. CCM are possibly the worst option for performance

3. Girodisc
The people who have cost at the forefront go this option as well as the regular trackday guys and racers.
This was also the recommendation from Freddy at special-brakes.de.
Only 2 problems
1. Importing from the states, the cost is similar (within a couple K to price given to me by MDL)
2. Increased unsprung mass

4. Surface Transfom - when I call them, the said they don't do discs for a 599.

I have been told that 430 scuderia discs can be used on a 599.
Also been told that there's a race upgrade kit for the 430 scuderia that will fit on the 599 and some dealers have old stock they need to get rid of.

Edit / Note race upgrade kit includes calipers

My limited enquiries have not been able to confirm either.

I may have a single rear 599 challenge style wheel in the garage if it’s of any interest?
