Mistakes happen but I'm surprised you don't use something like MailChimp.
Because that would be breaking the Data Protection Act too (can't store EU data on US servers).

Hold on, I get what you mean - they probably are.

Not that it particularly bothers me that my e-mail address has been sent out but should a university student be logged in as Oliver in the first place to be able to do this? What else do they have access to using someone else's login?

I'm not that fussed to be honest, these things happen and an email address to fellow members is not the end of the world!
I wonder if you'd feel the same if every website you ever registered on sent your e-mail address to a load of other members.

It sounds like it was an honest mistake by Oliver, but IMO Haymarket have been lax in allowing this to happen.
Absolutely, simply not confidence inspiring.

Oh, I'm not that clever to have meant that. biggrin

Wait, is that an EU directive?

No and yes

Data protection principal 8 states you cannot store personal information outside the EEA and is a UK law.

EU privacy directive reinforces the requirements to adequately protect personal data that you store or process.

Just read the offending email and deleted it so if anybody gets spammed it won't be by me.

Would Haymarket like to delete their mailing list with my address on it as a gesture of good faith?

Thanks in advance...

Leaving aside the obvious data breach, for me it's the abdication of responsibility to pin it all on the work experience bod. The Marketing Manager/Head of/Director is accountable for the actions of those working under them. That person should step up rather than hiding behind a fairly mealy-mouthed apology.

I also trust that Sara Howers HMG Privacy Officer will be ensuring that 'lessons are learnt'.

There was a last time? Got a link?

Perhaps in future Haymarket should provide placement students with the appropriate training on data protection regulations and use of e-mail systems before being entrusted with our data.
Sunday Service last year ...

I'll look into this as a matter of urgency... Apologies in advance if someone has slipped up!

Official update regarding today's email about the upcoming Sunday Service from Sara Howers (HMG Privacy Officer)

We have looked into this and it was caused by a human error. The individual responsible has attended Data Protection training and this has been reinforced in light of this mistake. Please accept our sincere apologies that this has happened, as we do really care about the security of your data. I received the emails and the second one annoyed more than the first!

Don't hide behind the university student whether that's the truth or not. Man up and take corporate responsibility for the mistake.

I was annoyed when I first received the email earlier today, but now: not bothered, mistakes happen, we're only human.

What do you guys do with our e-mail addresses?

It may be just a coincidence but a week or so ago I received a junk e-mail on a not commonplace subject I'd been posting about roughly 10 minutes earlier

I thought this was a bit serious at first but only realised when I got to this point that HMG doesn't mean Her Majesty's Government. paperbag

You've seen the way their adverts work, and PH uses more tracking bots these days than any other website I've come across

Wouldn't surprise me at if they are monetising our email addresses
