I agree remote image uploading into the reply would be a great feature. As at the mo I have to upload to flickr from the phone. Go to flickr full web version mess about with sizes and grab the URL.
there is an app called 'pic garage' its not amazingly good, however it does allow you to upload whilst out and about + grab the URl and post these things. Rather handy!

Can someone with iOS4 tell me if it's just me, but posting from your iPhone on the forum does the page go double size and the formatting of the reply box go all out.

Example:

hit 'reply to topic'

Type a line (all appears normal)

return to start a new line

Type something and the text box format goes all weird.
It's not just you. Same for me.
Same for me.

Way round it is select all text cut write your stuff then paste it back in at the top. thumbup

Replying on iPhone.
Someone said on an earlier thread about using two fingers and pulling down text in the text-box that way - haven't tried it yet as I'm abroad, but there were lots of gasps of amazement from the crowd.

iPhone (and iPad) apps are written using the Apple SDK - it's not a bad environment, has a simulator, etc.
It runs on Apple Intel based desktops/laptops and not on Windows.
Apple are very very control freak about the whole app development/release process (to protect their revenues and technology) - there is the whole jailbreak thing too, if you like that sort of thing.

That and replying to a set of nested quotes gets very difficult, unless someone can tell me how to scroll to the bottom of the quotes.
When you quote someone it obviously opens a reply box with the persons
post, if its a long one and the quote goes beyond the box simply put 2 fingers onto the screen but inside the box, this will let you scroll within the box but wont move the whole like it would with 1 finger.
Hope that makes sense thumbup.

Edit to add a screen from iphone secrets that may explain better.

The mobile website is fine until you try to view a thread and it throws up an error 75% of the time
Indeed. I still browse the 'normal' site on my iPhone because of this. Shame it always defaults to the mobile site!
You can bookmark the full site then it won't redirect you to the mobile one, it will only redirect you if go direct to www.pistonheads.com

Why can't PH be available on Tapatalk?
We don't use off the shelf software, so it would require significant development to get it working and would then leave us tied into a third-party solution we do not have control over.

why is it that iphone users seem to think that the only way to do stuff is through an "app"

The Facebook mobile site is very good and doesnt need to be an app, ditto lots of other sites that they now demand "apps" for

ditto all sorts of stuff, "Is there an app" is the new <AOL>

Well, the Facebook APP happens to be a zillion times better than the mobile site... same goes for Autotrader, Rightmove and a ton more. So, APPs can be infinetly better as they are built for a specific platform.
There is no reason why mobile sites cannot be just as good as apps, plus they work across all platforms, including future ones. This means that we'd prefer to spend our (limited) dev time this way, rather than investing in something specific which may become obsolete.

Ph looks great on the IPAD. Just not other forums who use vbulletin software.
Looks great but not being able to post pictures is a pain
But surely with all those sigs, avatars, and meaningless gifs in sigs, it must be really slow on an iPod touch/ iPhone. Not really sure about iphone4 though

That simply isn't true - have you done much iPhone app and iPhone web app development?

I view pistonheads via the mobile site for most of my visits. Likewise with facebook I use the app.
Pistonheads works most of the time, but I don't get all the pics, facebook is fine until I try to post a comment which tends to lock up about half the time.
Android might be an easier option than the apple sdk as I believe that google are releasing an "app maker" soon.
Via my iPod!

I don't think that there's anything the mobile site would benefit from by being shoehorned into an 'app'.

But whilst we're here, Mr Will could you move the 'Log Out' away from the 'New Posts' hyperlink please? The number of times I've hit that accidentally..

There are many benefits to having an iPhone app (or Android/Blackberry app): the inbuilt features of the operating system which helps with uploads, web page links etc; common site furniture provided locally; and the biggest advantage - a presence in the app stores of the appropriate phone, thus creating free advertising and the ability to snowball growth of the app.

But as Will says, developing these apps is something that is currently outside the scope of the development budget - and the mobile solution we currently have in place gets nearly 6 million hits a month, so it is not doing too badly.

Though we are not ruling out developing apps for PistonHeads, but I can't see it happening within the next year.
