I'd still try a Linux Live CD.

There's nothing to install and it's free. You just download the Linux ISO burn to CD, leave the CD in the drive and reboot - hopefully the CD will boot to Linux and you'll have the option to surf the net and check out Piston Heads smile

Or try in a VirtualBox

http://www.virtualbox.org/ (There are other Virtual Machines)

http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download (There are other Live CD's)

Look at each of the 4 steps with step 3 the option you'll want smile

Can you take your laptop to a friends and try their internet connection?

If it works elsewhere, then we'll know that it's your internet connection, if it still doesn't work then we'll know it's your laptop.

Two possible suggestions, one is call plusnet and ask what they are playing at, as they are obviously doing some kind of filtering.

The other is to try and find a way around, probably the most likely one to work is signing up to OpenDNS and setting it up on your laptop or router. It's free and will (hopefully) bypass the ISPs filters.

Just ask them why they are blocking your access to http://cdn.images.pistonheads.com/

Tell them that no devices on your network can access it, yet those same devices will happily connect to it from elsewhere.

As a matter of interest, what happens when you click on the link in Mr Will's post above?

I have few things for you (one is a solution - though please don't tell everyone)

1. Open up the command window* and type the following:
  • ping cdn.images.pistonheads.com
  • Note the response, if it times out or says can't find host then there is an issue with the DNS
2. Next type the following:
  • ping 87.248.210.254
  • Note the response, it it works then it is a DNS issue, if not then some other problem
3. Next type the following (if 1 worked use the cdn.images etc name, if 2 then use the IP address):
  • tracert cdn.images.pistonheads.com
  • tracert 87.248.210.254
  • Post the response in here (to copy from the command window you have to Mark the text and press return)
4. The CDN is just a Content Distribution Network of our image server, and thus the images exist in real life. So if you change your hosts file so that cdn.images.pistonheads.com goes to 195.225.218.138 then that will fix your problem. (if you need to know how to do that, then let me know)

Thus the below you should see which is the top advert on the homepage (if you can't then 4 wont work either)

I am also unsure on how to do number 4 :-)

To do number 4 do the following:

Start > Run > Then type
  • %SystemRoot%\system32\notepad.exe "c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts"
Under the # symbols type on a new line

195.225.218.138 cdn.images.pistonheads.com

Then save the file.

I can never remember if you have to reboot after to make this work or not, so prob best too... also, if it doesn't work in firefox try Chrome as I know that definately uses the hosts file.

Any problems then shout

He's winding you up, there is just a blank space in his post, not an image.
