Disappearing thread, should some trace be left?

I know it existed, because it's there in my browsing history, but there's no trace of it on the forum and it's not there under forums in my profile.
Just wondering if, when a thread gets deleted, some indication should be given as to why, so that people know if some rule has been broken, or whatever?

I daresay, but that doesn't tell the other contributors anything. Perhaps it would be a good idea if some reason was given which would then help everybody to know what is and isn't ok?

The thread I'm thinking of was one on the business forum, somebody asking if the advert for his business that he had placed (on another site) was ok. The thread may well have been started simply to draw attention to the advert, or may have been genuinely asking for advice- I don't know.

IIRC the thread in question was deleted it was the third thread from this member on the same subject. The first two threads were asking for ideas the last one was a full-blown advert with photos of the business van etc, asking if it was OK.
At this point it was deemed an advert and as such was deleted, as it contravened the Rule of Posting no. 7, the OP was mailed with a reason.
In the main the OP is usually mailed as to the reason for the deletion of the thread/post. If the reason for the deletion is obvious then the mail message will be short and sweet. As already stated "Thanks but no thanks" or similar.
Threads and posts do not necessarily have to break the rules of posting to get removed, animal cruelty clips for instance or unsavoury, unpleasant or repulsive subject matters will be dealt with in the same way, just try to remember what doesn’t offend you may well offend others.
