Just to give a bit of closure to this, I went to test drive an LP700 roadster and an S coupe. The presence and drama are fantastic, engine incredibly guttural but the sheer size, gearbox and the very narrow scope of use means I decided to rest the Aventador dream at the end of the test drive.
I'm back to looking at 458's and should be in one imminently. If I didn't live in a rural part of the UK with more open well surfaced roads, I could probably look past the gearbox but the size and ride just wouldn't work where I live. Will always look at them with admiration however.

A motoring journalist, forget which one, said that having a breadth of vehicles which offer different experiences is more enjoyable than having several cars which are relatively similar such as engine layout and powered wheels. You actually point this out regarding the huracan and r8; I'd suggest that the 458 will not be too dissimilar.
I consolidated a couple of cars which were similar for another and I'm glad I did because now each car offers very different thrills. Why not go for a light weight variant, analogue or hybrid, classic etc? This is by no means a criticism but variety is the spice of life!

I think this is the biggest drawback and I guess it applies to all exotica which you would not feel comfortable parking on a busy urban street and walking away from it. Sort of explains why there has been such a rise in the sale and desirability of super SUVs..

Totally agree with the above comments, late 2019 I had the funds for either 2014/15 AV Roadster, or the newer Av 'S' Coupe (S Roadster was out of budget at the time), I drove the early roadster and I was very disappointed (it did not help the car was not a good one).
After driving a 1k mile 2017 mint S coupe variant, I found it much better than the early car in every way, especially the handling and balance of the car around bends etc, the 4 wheel steer does make a difference and the car felt to me, much more agile, better put together and confidence inspiring than the older car.

I did 17k miles in the coupe below (now sold), and have now completed nearly 5k miles in my newer S Roadster.
They are very different to drive than the much easier to live with huracan though, and the running/servicing costs are now becoming a bit silly.
Apparently the warranty extension costs for the Aventador have had a price increase from the already expensive 6.6k per year, to closer to 10k per year!
I will be updating with a thread on this shortly with the confirmed figures.
Great cars in their own way, but they do need 20 mins driving to warm everything up though, and the fuel tank is too small for the way it burns through it, which is a genuine pain if you are out all day / on a trip with others, as you will need to stop more frequently than any other car.
But if you want a mid engine V12 roadster, there is not much to chose from!

I think you make a very good point and this is why I still have my Z4M roadster and a late DB9 Volante. I would of course love a Speciale but it's out of budget but from my experience the 458 seems quite different to an R8. The R8 feels quite grown up and more pinned down than the 458 with very quick steering + skinnier tyres as well as being rear wheel drive. I'm also wanting a breadth of drivetrains, I don't own an NA V8 so that's something I want to tick on my list. The only other car I "want" currently is an Atom or a fast Caterham.

If you have not considered one already, with a a strict budget of say £150k, I would be looking at a 600LT Spyder.
For your intended use/purpose, I would always pick one of these over a 458/488 Spyder.
Still fairly different to a 650 S or maybe not?
I would sell the 650 S and keep a 600LT Spyder instead personally.
