Well then, after a tour that has taken us through Lamborghini, Maserati, De Tomaso, Alfa, Lancia, Fiat, Citroen, Intermecannica, Monteverdi, Cristalia, Pegaso and much more it seems that the majority favor the Miura as #1 and I think they are probably right.

Great works of art should not be tampered with though, so why coat the Miura with bits of zinc? Anyway here’s something of an oddity, the Miura ZN75

Then of course there are the cars we were robbed of, mix together the words Bertone and Stratos (how could it be bad) and look

It was made in 1970…………..scary. Now if somebody actually had the danglies to build the thing I have a sneaky feeling they might shift one or two of them. Its 34 years old for Christ sake and look what we get now, a Lambo that looks like a Celica

And another italian bodied Aston - this time by Bertone.

Still prefer the DB4 Zagato on the other page though...

And we must have another Mangusta on the thread. After all, it is one of the best looking cars of all time:

Anyone know who designed it? Bertone? Pininfarina? I've no idea..

Its fantastic. I ought to know, so if someone can advise...

So clearly, Italy rocks.

While Ettore Bugatti was born Italian he settled in Alsace, an area located in FRANCE bordering Germany that was French then German then French then German then French again (see history books )
So, apart from the name there's hardly anything italian-related with Bugatti.
The beauty of Bugatti engineering is quite like that of Voisin and other car manufacturers from the late 1920s (full 'Art Deco' period).

Yes, the SZ..

But even rarer is the RZ version, and this one is rather gorgeous:

Now that is a seriously overlooked and interesting sports car !

Take one perfectly acceptable Lancia Integrale and blend with exotic ingredients from the nice chaps at Zagato and what have you got?

The Hyena!!!

There was I recall one for sale recently for a very generous £50k, won’t see to many others in the golf club car park I would imagine.

Topsuff, Mangusta details to follow later but as I recall it wasn’t Tom Tjaarda who did the Pantera. It was a bit of a mix and match from Bizzarrini and Guigiaro who were trying to design a 2 door ISO but due to a lack of a workable chassis ditched the project which then got picked up by the cunning De Tomaso. Or something like that.

As for the SZ (or indeed the RZ, good call) what betters ways are there of spending £18k?

Bump.

Because this is the best thread I have ever read on PH. Glorious automotive beauty. And that Fiat Dino has made me consider selling the Chim!

Thank you all.

While on the Zagato theme

The single 1996 Lamborghini Raptor Zagato prototype was auctioned by Brooks Europe during the March 2000 Geneva Auto Show. A rather low price for this very rare car but a great opportunity for the happy new owner, the car was shipped to the United States were it is now located in a private collection.

For all of who have had the De Tomaso induced ‘road to Damascus’ experience there is good news. As far as I’m aware you can still actually order a brand new De tomaso in the shape of the Guara. I have to confess I’m not that familiar with what they are like but using the traditional backbone chassis and mid mounted V8 seems to put it on the right straight. BMW powered these days buy weighing about 1200 kg’s I can think its to shoddy.

Any way here’s a pic and a link to the folks who sell the beasts.

Not elite, but...

So here's one specially for toppstuff...

And one strictly for me...

toppstuff, I lost touch with the owner of the Dino, but if you find one look for leakage around the cylinder heads. You had to take the camshafts out to tighten the heads down evenly, and a lot of people just didn't bother.

Isn't it extraordinary how much beauty the Italians design into their cars? Even the little X19 was a masterpiece.

Have only just returned from the land of the free and the home of the brave so forgive me joining the fray somewhat late.

The Lambo story is one to warm the cockles of any true enthusiasts heart - Ferrucio Lamborghini deciding that he wants a super-car so good that only he can build it so that's just what he does - brilliant.

The old man got to within cheque writing distance of butying an orange Espada out of a bizarre collection of an eccentric Norfolk zoo owner in the early 80's. Sadly Ma decreed said vehicle vulgar and another XJ-S turned up. I wanted him to spend the trifling £9,000 on the beast so much my bladder hurt and I haven't fully forgiven my lemon-sucking mother and her kill-joy presbytarian ways to this day.

But here's a thing about the eye-tie exotica: the newer it is the more obvious it seems. Give me a 350 GT, a Jarma or - the best looking lambo ever; the Silhouete.

Nice one McNab.

Now chaps, i appeal to you all.

Consider the different 4 seater GT coupes over the years. Is'nt this the most gorgeous car? I don't think its proportions and styling have been bettered yet.

Think of GT coupes these days - Celicas, Calibras, Ford Cougars and all that dross. And then feast on the Fiat Dino - its simply better looking is'nt it?

Progress? Pah !
