Rowan's is claret, the colour is described by him as spilt red wine...

How all these guys are okay.

The damage to the car is a shame, but there were no serious injuries to the occupants.
I have always thought that the F1 looks good in white; the exterior of this one I liked (except for the wheels), the interior not so much.

From the gouge marks on the road it looks like the car was already on its roof before it left the asphalt, which is a bit puzzling.

I wonder if it belonged to a McLaren dealers or something, as there was a McLaren cover put over it before going on the recovery truck, then two of the people there got into a 650s.

The car was taking part in another Owner's Club Tour which is supported directly by McLaren. It is a privately owned car.

Rowan was a participant in his own F1 and was further up the road when the accident occurred. A passer-by alerted him and some others taking part of the incident and they returned to the scene to assist the driver and his passenger, along with collect some bits of the car.

Driver was okay, passenger had some minor injuries and both were airlifted as a precaution. They are said to be back at the hotel and will be just fine. The car is rather messed up of course, but certainly not beyond repair thanks to the talents in Woking.

Here's a bit more info on it http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2641834/Mr...

Such a nice car, can even McLaren fix such a thing?

F*cking Daily Mail, "Helped Save the drivers life...." Exactly how did he do that then.

Yes - quite a mess that article.

He wasn't at the scene of the accident at the time it occurred so the only thing he could have told police was exactly what they could see when they got there.

Some of the text refers to this car as "destroyed" even though the article also makes mention of Atkinson's previous crash and his car being repaired. This car isn't looking pretty, but doesn't have near the level of damage.

Author puts the price estimate of the car at £3.5M despite the DailyMail publishing an article within the past month talking about the Red McLaren F1 being purchased by a British Petrolhead for over £6M. Values are much closer to that mark than the one they are reporting now.

Its saving grace is that it is one of the few articles that doesn't leave you wondering if Atkinson was actually driving the car that had the incident this time - quite a number of them are not clear on this - choosing to focus on sensationalizing the story with a celebrity who was only acting as a good-Samaritan. Still the level of baseless rhetoric in this one (written mainly by looking at the images from the Italian press) is not a whole lot better.

Journalism ain't what it used to be. <sigh>

Is there any link to the rebuild of Atkinsons F1? Was it documented at all, or just repaired behind the scenes?

Would make for an interesting read.

There was an article published in Classic & Sports Car magazine in March 2013 with the aid of McLaren and with Rowan's involvement.

It's mentioned here on this page but I don't think there's a place on their website where you can enjoy the full article. Probably have to find a paper copy or scans.

Clear from those images that the road was undoubtedly slippy from the rainfall that is apparent on Rowan Atkinson's car and on the road surrounding it. I feel for the owner, it's probably those "perfect storm" circumstances that's caught him out but the cars occupants are living to tell the tale and that's what matters.

I've been appreciating the photos online (from Simon Kidston) of the ongoing McLaren tour. My very serious question is: given the value of the vehicles being parked in such close proximity at nights, are they under any sort of guard?

Rowan Atkinson was around 1km up the road when the crash happened. Includes eyewitness account from Marchettino

Probably, but I can't imagine anyone thinking stealing a McLaren F1 is a good idea.
I seem to recall all cars have various sneaky security measures built in; that and the fact you'd never be able to sell it on outside of the dodgiest of black markets

Both locations they have used for these Owner's Club Tour events have been very exclusive properties - private and gate-guarded with on-site security. They also do their best to keep the locations and routes of the event a secret. The news that sparked this thread obviously created headlines well in advance of what would have been ideal, but you can't control everything.

I was thinking more of the vehicles being vulnerable to attack rather than theft, to be honest. I remember an example a few years ago when Jay Kay had parked his Enzo outside a hotel (somewhere in England, I think) and it was vandalised.

Peloton - thanks for the response too. I thought it might be something like that. However, I guess the secret only lasts so long, probably until the engines fire up and the world's most expensive trail of cars winds its way through the countryside! (Nice to see some other McLaren vehicles in among the F1s as well.)

Jay Kay incident was in Aldeburgh Suffolk. The damage, from what I could see, was a broken side window.. A hotel employee allegedly caused it after a drinking bout with JK.
