Here is a F1 car that will likely never be used and is worth north of 20million and on the other side of the world in a Brunei collection around five low milers F1 cars sit rotting away.
That's right, there was a great article in a car mag many years ago about a chap trying to buy one from the Sultan's family ( a disgraced family member I believe). It was in a terrible state due to humidity. From memory he got as far as tacit approval from various family members but was stumped by the local governments refusal to release for re-export.
Fascinating story, does anyone have the link anymore?

Ps he also made mention of the 200 or 300 other classics rotting away in a humid warehouse..

I believe the article alluded to the fact that the really nice stuff like the F1s were looked after rather better than the 'Snotter' Mercedes, etc that were left out in the Brunei sun.

That said, they must be gathering dust now, unless the Sultan has moved them to his private car collection underneath his palace.

One hopes so as there's a lot of history sat in those garages.

What a stupid post, I don’t see anyone claiming to be an expert, arguing or referring to their authority on the matter, merely a bunch of car lovers commenting and voicing opinions. As you do on a car thread.

Considering that there is at least one long term actual owner of a F1 on this actual thread perhaps your ill advised one here.

Think they may be selling off a few at the moment. They've been hawking a rare 911 around London for silly money the past few weeks.

This GTR sold for £276,500 including premium at the Brooks auction at 2000 Goodwood Festival of Speed...

Some other price highlights from that month:

That was obviously a great buy. At that time, and for several years after, there was "nothing" that you could do with a GTR long-tail except track days. They were not eligible for any racing series except one in Japan, and they could not be made road-legal, unlike the '95 and '96 GTRs.

Didn't Chris Evans buy #005 from the Brunei collection?

Unless speedo has been changed its covered only about 5k km (or possibly miles?) in the last 20/21 years, plus whatever has been added this year.

If the £9M figure and <5k km is accurate (and similarly the £20M+ figure for the yellow one) then CH bought himself a bargain!

That 250 GT Lusso HAS to be wrong, surely??!!! Aren't they a couple of million now?? That's one hell of an ROI, if so.

The F40 prices I remember. Simply because at the time I was trying to convince my OH that we should re-mortgage and buy an F40 for £160k because I was convinced they were going to go up in value. Sadly that was dismissed as one of my more stupid ideas...now if I just had the balls to say, "I told you so"....

The Lusso is cheap because it's been messed about with and is non-original, as well as the random auction price factor. I remember around that time that one London dealer specialising in these always had a few in stock around £100-120k-ish.

Regarding the F40 'investment' plan, how much would 17 years of maintenance and upkeep on an F40 cost, and how much profit would that have yielded based on prices then and now? Also, if you needed to remortgage to buy the thing you probably couldn't afford the upkeep either.

f40's aren't too expensive maintenance wise, the problem is having the patience to not sell it @ 300/600k

That Daytona Spyder is not bad either, if it's a genuine factory Spyder like it says. One sold for $3.3M earlier this year.

I wasn't after investment advice, thanks - merely recanting a somewhat 'inner child ruling the head' conversation I had many years ago. smile

Yes the prices are right and yes it's an original Daytona Spyder. The mag is also littered with dealer ads like a mint DB4 for £34,950 Ono; RS500 £12,950 ono; Dinos at £30k

Just as interesting is the stuff that hasn't moved so much - silver spirits etc
