Funny - that's my favorite element of the P1's design. Certainly not an afterthought - in a conversation with Frank Stephenson he mentioned that a lot of time was put into getting that just right with the curve and the gap.
Here's one of my pics from the Paris Motor Show that highlights it a little better, maybe?
