New McLaren 650S
Discussion
Like to new front but never really had an issue sight that... It's the back which needed some help and it's been pretty much left alone... When I compare it to the 458 bum... Or the new Huracan.. Let's just say we are not at the same level.
Looks much better though, if they managed to make it more reliable and add a little emotion to it too might finally be the car people have been looking for...

I just don't get this whole "emotion" thing. Is the car supposed to cry? Or is Mclaren seem as unemotional because Ron just isn't as suave as the uber-cool Luca Di Montezemolo (Lacks similar hair, clothes, or even sexy sounding name)Looks much better though, if they managed to make it more reliable and add a little emotion to it too might finally be the car people have been looking for...
Seems to me it's largely been invented by journos to describe cars in a negative way when to a large extent they're just too good. A journo jumps out of their own car for a few hours to drive a hypercar, it's stunning in most everything it does, so what can he say that's newsworthy... "The car needs more emotion". I've said this before on here so apologies for repeating myself, but the idea that a 458 has more "emotion" than a 12c is IMO absolute garbage. Both are as "digital" (another word that's become almost a critical term) as eachother, and a world removed from older cars that really were "analogue" (does this mean "emotional"?!). Surely that's what the advent of all these gizmos brings us, cars that are faster, more able to stay on the road when provoked, often have less feel as one drives them, but doesn't the word "digital" have to describe them all.
The P1 I thrashed (by my standards) round dunsfold a few months ago. Digital as it gets. Bet we'll soon be reading that laferrari has emotion. Seems to me it's a fallacy on the basis that it's Italian and therefore must surely have emotion. Sorry don't see it. The 458. Digital. The F12. Digital. The ff. Digital. The 991 turbo s. Digital. And yes, mclaren's offerings are all as digital. In fact given the 12c's reliability issues perhaps they've "dialled in" some emotion by irritating the hell out of the owners like classic Ferrari's do when they break down.
The more I reflect on 650s the more I'm underwhelmed sadly. The orange one at the factory showed the evolution of the shape better I think than the now-released images, but would have expected a little more. Sadly updates to current models, like this and the "new" California T, appear to be getting increasingly hard to spot. I hope Mclaren drop the line that this is a new model, it's almost like calling a GT3 a new model otherwise.

'Emotion' generally means the car is more highly strung and unreliable.
More like the emotion a car evokes in the person driving it surely?Having watched Shmee150's in car footage of his own 12C recently, the only thing that stood out for me was the loud 'click' from the paddle shifters. Any decent engine or induction noise should be drowning that out. Not a good recipe for an 'emotive' drive in my mind!

Of course it is all about how the driver feels, but loud and bolshy tends to mean 'emotion' to car journo's, but smoother and more controlled can also generate emotion in other type of driver too IMO. Usually short handed for 'boring'.

Does the satnav work now, and is the system any good?
I've only had the new system fitted to my car for 2 weeks now, but it is a much smarter Android setup that appears to have numerous benefits and rivals/betters anything I have seen on the market.DeltaOne said:

A more powerful, more comfortable, 12C. The 650S doesn't appear to be a direct competitor to the Speciale or GT3.

I think its the beginning of the end for McLaren with this 650s, it maybe even faster, so what, the market has already spoken and that's NOT what sells.
A great of people who have bought into the 12c have come out and gone back to other marques that deliver that intangible something!
I very much doubt that they'll return for repeat business.

I think this post is just a lot of wrong words strung together.A great of people who have bought into the 12c have come out and gone back to other marques that deliver that intangible something!

There are plenty of people out there who do not want the "intangible something" you describe, which others variously describe as "passion" or "soul" or other such garbage.
There are plenty of people who simply do not want the Italian rivals.
There are plenty of people who are looking for something more interesting and exotic than a Porsche, but able to be an easy daily driver.
For these people, there is McLaren. There really is no point in McLaren trying to be like an Italian car maker. The Italians already have them.
McLaren must carve out its own market. And they are doing this very, very well.
I would happily own a 650s. I have no desire to own a 458, or a Gallardo. I am not alone in this view.
