Good luck to the new owner, I hope he has many fabulous miles with the car.

Wasn't there an F1 that was resprayed red to match another car the owner had in their collection?

Stunning colour combo

That was chassis 042, originally silver, which was redone in Ferrari's famous Rosso Corsa paint by a bodyshop in Texas back in 2004/2005 to match the owner's Ferrari Enzo. The interior was also retrimmed in red at the same time.

He didn't keep the car much more than a year after the work was completed. Then it was sold to a gentleman in Northern California who was also the owner of another F1 road car. Here's a couple of pics of the repainted car at an event at Infineon Raceway in June 2011. Believe this was the last time that car was spotted so I can't be certain of where it might be or how it might look today.

Conincidentally, chassis 028 was also on display at McLaren's tent at this same event.

Some nice photos of #28 on DK's website:

http://www.dkeng.co.uk/ferrari-sales/427/Blue_Chip...

Not sure why they've put them on there though. The car seems to have been brokered specifically for the new owner and therefore was never actually 'available' for purchase as such?

Seems like DK are becoming the 'go to' place for those in search of an F1? They seem to have handled a few such deals, must bear in that in mind if my Euromillions luck ever changes...!

They've handled a pair of road cars and a GTR so far - though not entirely sure they completed the GTR transaction, but those are a bit more difficult to place sometimes. Good group of people - wouldn't hesitate to give them my business.

What is the significance of the 'Special Order Car' and signature on the badge on the rear grill?

It says "Special Order Car by Andretti" as this car was originally Michael Andretti's - given to him as partial compensation for his brief stint with the McLaren Formula One team in 1993. I don't believe the badge is original to the car - I believe it is something that may have been added by or for its Japanese owner who acquired the car from Michael about a year after it was completed. FTR there's no other F1 with a badge like that at all.

Is this the GTR? I remember seeing it on the DK website a few years ago so I always assumed they must've completed the transaction:

http://www.dkeng.co.uk/Vehicle_Archive/25/McLaren_...

Evo did a feature on this particular vehicle, and I find it especially amusing that back then, the price was reduced by £400k to encourage a quick sale. Try finding an F1 these days for £1.6m, GTR or otherwise!

Yes, that was the GTR - 16R. It was eventually sold, but my understanding is that it was sold through a different UK dealer.

This is as good a thread as any to ask a question I've often been curious about. Let's say my luck does miraculously change and my bank balance hugely increases. I finally have enough money to afford a McLaren F1, so how would I go about getting one? (Ideally I'd prefer a road car but if it had to be a converted racecar, that wouldn't be a complete disaster!) Would I:

- Approach McLaren directly? I remember reading somewhere that they certainly used to maintain some sort of database for those seeking F1s and owners possibly prepared to sell. This method would also have the side effect of starting to forge a relationship with the factory. (This would be useful, given that I imagine most new purchasers end up getting some sort of customisation done anyway.)
- Go through a dealer / broker? Those I'm aware of who've handled F1 transactions are DK Engineering, Tom Hartley, Elms Collection, Simon Kidston.

There's always this one at SPS in Hong Kong:

http://www.sps-automotive.com/en_sps/narrive/mclar...

Their stocklist never seems to change though, so I'm not sure if it's vehicles they actually have available, or else just indicative of what they might be able to find.

Pics on the SPS website are from 2006. That particular car left HK in 2011 - believe it is still registered to a Guernsey owner today who acquired it from there. It was the one used in an Octane article not too long ago.

You're unlikely to find one sitting at a dealer in this market unless it was display only/not for sale. The two options you propose would work best. The broker angle perhaps a little better as then you have someone working to get you a car rather than waiting for an owner to decide to allow McLaren to sell one. I'm not sure they are in the business of knocking on doors to find one when someone is looking, but they have sold some of the better ones directly so it couldn't hurt to get your name on their list. The mistake some people make is engaging a number of brokers thinking they will help their cause when instead they end up competing and driving up the asking price against themselves with the perception of too much interest. I will add that you certainly aren't going to find one quickly unless you are eager to set a new pricing standard in the market.

Cheers Erik, helpful as always. I thought that the SPS car was unlikely to be available, since it seems to have been sitting on their website for a good few years now.

Not that I'm ever likely to be in the position to get my hands on an F1, but prices for them seem to be going absolutely crazy. I know that the Daily Mail might not be the most accurate source, but the car that started this particular thread was said to have changed hands for somewhere in the region of £6m. I suppose in a way it's great that the car is finally being appreciated now, but if it had been a bigger sales success in the 90s, maybe there'd be more than the 64 or so road cars in existence! (But then, in relative terms there's loads of F40s, yet prices for them are skyrocketing too.)Should George Harrison's F1 ever emerge for sale, imagine what it could fetch...

While on the subject of F1s. What ever happened to the wreck of the F1 involved in a fatal crash in Essex many years ago?
