Second visit in today as the salesman was keen to get me into a car for a test drive , seemed more than happy to let me have the demo for a day subject to insurance who ok’d it only to then go back on it an hour later ?

I’m Rather pissed off as they had the perfect spec sitting in the showroom!
I think you need to think long term as there could be a reason for this change of heart. For example the manager could’ve overruled the salesman, the salesman might not been aware of this or a certain situation and also, things change.

Your post feels like you’re very angry so maybe you’re reacting, understandably so. Maybe give it a few days, rethink and go from there. To not get your dream car just because of this seems like you’re shooting yourself in the foot!

Buying a supercar was never easy smile

I liked the drive, difficult to make a decision based on < 30minutes of driving though ?

I like the car, I’m very keen to get a deal done just didn’t like the way they handled things regarding the extended test drive, never had this problem when buying from Ferrari or lambo
I wish I had that patience. I'd decided I wanted one when I rolled into the car park hehe

If they had the perfect car for you and its not sold discuss a deal, stick a £10k deposit down and tell them its subject to an extended test drive.
Shows intent on your part as I'm sure they get loads of tyre kickers and if they don't know you from Adam there is a large risk to their dealership.
IF you decided it wasn't for you, which I would find hard to believe, you would get your money back.

Sadly if they let their car out to everyone willy nilly it would be a nightmare for them

Yeah this seems like the sensible option Rambo, I did lose the rag last night when I posted tbh...

I’ll give them the option tomorrow of putting my deposit down etc which on hindsight I probably
Should have done yesterday !

that's reasonable imo

I think it's fair that he wants an extended test drive, these cars are a lot of money and 30 minutes isn't a huge amount of time

I personally would have to say that if after a 30 minute test drive you are not sure if you want the car, don't spend all that money. I would say it took me less than 5 minutes behind the wheel of a 599 to know that I wanted one and probably about 2 minutes in a 458 to know that my life would not be complete without one. Equally, much as I have enjoyed test driving a McLaren, a 488 and many other fine cars, it also only took me a few minutes to know that, much as I liked them, I wasn't breaking open the wallet for one.

As I have said before certain cars show you everything they have got in the first 20 minutes and then that's it.

There is so much more to take on board with the McLarens IMHO because they are so accomplished and not just shouty from the off.
They are definitely growers and it does take several drives and decent seat time to fully evaluate the total package you get with the car.
Half of the problem is they are so damn good. I know its weird but they are so well engineered they almost need to be worse to be better in some ways

I can see why some people won't get it straight away as it took me a number of drives over a couple of years to "get it".

A McLaren is marriage material not just a one night stand. Although one night stands can be fun its not something I would recommend doing long term.

Who can't fall in love with those "billionaire doors" !

I hear what you say but I buy supercars with my heart not my head. For me, if it's not love at first sight (or drive), it's a no.

That's fair enough and I also get that, but then McLaren is probably not for you then, whichever McLaren it is.
I guess you are either a Ferrari or Lamborghini man or both.

I've grown to appreciate all 3 brands and am fortunate to have 1 of each and IMHO possibly the best 3.
They are all different and are all great in their own ways and I frequently get asked which is the best which as you can imagine is very difficult to answer.

After listing all their individual good points and in summary I have always come back and answered that overall the McLaren was the best car for me personally ( that was based primarily on a 650S spider which has now recently become a 675LT spider and moved to a whole new level )

Calling any supercar a 1 trick pony might be a bit harsh but its certainly not something I would level at a McLaren.

Before anyone says I'm biased I would like to add I love my lambo and fezza as well.

McLaren have made great strides in a short period of time primarily off the back of great products and they have a lot of work to do to catch up Ferrari and lambo for marketing, aftersales and the dealer network but when they do they really will be a massive threat to Ferrari's 70 year dominance.

Will it happen in my lifetime ? - I would like to think so. C'mon McLaren sock it to those greasy Italians. Rule Brittannia !

Well wee update, an extended test drive on my own isn’t happening, unfortunate!

Dealers more than happy for me to spend a day with a demo accompanied by salesman which will do.

Hopefully get the deal tied up afterall!

Must be an insurance over unaccompanied test drives. If they have had too many claims or a write off the insurance will be prohibitive which is understandable afterall a supercar in the hands of an inexperienced driver is potentially dangerous.

Was only a few years back that McLaren Manchester had a 650S on a demo hit a tree and go up in flames

At least you have got the car for the day by the sounds of it and I don't suppose the salesman is rushed off his feet.

Good luck and enjoy !

I live a few Mins from McLaren Glasgow, think I will roll in this Saturday, say I'm thinking of buying one, and ask if I can have it all day Sunday to be returned Monday morning at which point I will either buy one or walk away - dont see any reason for them to refuse, am I being un reasonable ?

I don’t think it is unreasonable to make a decision based on a couple of hours with a salesman accompanying. If you are a serial super car customer the dealer might offer you a car to try for the weekend. But these are very high value and quite rare items and you can’t expect them to be lent out like maybe an MX5
