991.2 GT3 to 570S
Discussion
I had a 12C which was a perfect touring car. Very comfy, huge boot and 30mpg. However I wanted a manual as most of my touring is with my wife and not at a fast pace so a manual box would keep me occupied in the Apine pasess.
I tried a 991.2 GT3 manual and it was rock hard, way to hard for UK roads, even stiffer than my Exige 430 CUP. I really wanted one so it was a shame. After trying lots of different 991.1 & 991.2 GTS variants I decided on a 981 Spyder, sounds great, convertible, loads of luggage space and the nice 6 speed (not the awful 7 speed) manual.
We bought a 981 Spyder and enjoyed a wonderful 3k mile trip down to Lake Annecy then down to Antibes (via route Napoleon) then to Monaco (for the F1) then all the way to Cortina and a week in the Dolomites driving all the passes then back to the UK via Lake Konstanz and the Nurburgring. The 981 was epic, really enjoyed it but as soon as we were back in the UK it didn't work. It was too stiffly sprung for the UK roads and we had to avoid B roads and use M-ways and plan routes to avoid anything bumpy. In the end it really upset me as it was perfect in every other way but I had to let it go. Just too stiff.
To replace it I went back to McLaren again but this time with a 675LT. I was told by many doubters that it would be too firm but its fine. My wife even prefers it to the Spyder to such an extent we did 5k miles just driving around in lockdown 2020.
However I adore Porsche and want another but the only one that tickles my fancy and has suitable compliance for touring is the 996, I had one for 7 years and it was the ideal touring car. So I am on the hunt for a 996 C2 manual and will tinker and modify it myself to make the perfect touring car for us.
To sum up IMHO McLaren's with their wizzard suspension and older non MO30 (sports suspension) 911's make perfect touring cars. The newer GT cars are just not suitable, esp. if they have a 'touring' badge on the back! A 570GT with the glass roof and hatch would be perfect too.

Robj4 oh dear that's a bit of a miss mate, the Boxster 981 GTS steering "is" total pants, had mine for nearly two years & just didn't drive it (1600 miles I think total) as it was so dull & lifeless with a vague connection to the road surface it just didn't inspire any enthusiasm in me....
You don't know what you're missing.......One day though eh!

Haha... One mans meat is another's poison... Yeah, maybe.. I had a CGTS for 2 years and 20k miles and loved it, maybe I'm just a pants driver that can't tell the difference! Or maybe I've been brainwashed by all the guff about porkers on t'net for too long.

Ha if you can't tell the difference between Boxster GTS steering & a 570's I shall suggest you must be dead from the neck down!
Nice car, but for me it was totally ruined by the steering. The older 986 steering was miles better.
That's not what I said was it, I shall suggest that you are dead from the neck up! hahahaNice car, but for me it was totally ruined by the steering. The older 986 steering was miles better.

Ha you may well be right, but at least I'm the one dumb enough to be driving a Mac!
Love it, I admit to not being able to afford a Mac, so I buy a car within my means and which suits me and incur the wrath of a new set of keyboard warriors! Enjoy guys in the knowledge that only you know the way of truth and everyone else must be 'dumb'.. BTW, Steve Sutcliffe seems to think they're ok:

I had a 981 BGTS for just about 2 years. It was an excellent spec and while I enjoyed much about the car, the steering really is as bad as they say it is. I did less than 3k miles. Have done double that in my mclaren despite covid times. It was just never an involving drive. The sound was pretty much the sole reason I kept it so long.
Fair enough to admitting a 570S is financially out of reach. I don't think anyone should financially squeeze themselves into a Mclaren. That seems to be when people are getting caught out by warranty, servicing etc.
Do you need to get a car right now? We're still in the middle of a lockdown. The things you're talking about doing are a way away yet. Why not wait and see what happens with macs down the road?

Did you buy the yellow high spec / low mileage 981 CGTS at 911 Sport? BTW, Steve Sutcliffe seems to think they're ok:

Hi Rob, sadly for you in particular, and for others, yet another McLaren thread has descended into pathetic personal insults. I really like McLaren especially the fact that they are British but there seems to be something particular toxic around the threads. There are some fantastic posters such as Justin, Mac720 etc. but there are many more disrupters such as Rambo Lambo, his alter ego William Waiver (who seems to have been quietly removed) and many others.
I have no explanation for it, but it genuinely makes me disappointed for the brand and its supporters.
In the meantime enjoy your new purchase in good health and look forward to open roads and better days ahead for all of us.

Quick update, in case anyone's interested, in the end I decided I couldn't afford another really expensive car, the one I was after was still £100k which wasn't much different to the GT3. Shame and one day I'll try a 570 hopefully, though in a couple of years I can see good ones starting to command decent money. Especially if I want one.
I've gone for another (third time) 981 GTS. A new 4.0 GTS PDK would have been £85k with the spec. I like (Ceramics and buckets) but I've been looking at a 2016 with only 9000 miles and near enough the right bits for me and agreed on it yesterday. Having gone from one of these into a GT4, back to the GTS and then a GT3 I know it'll feel a bit tardy, but they really are capable of giving you a big grin on a clear road without screaming to the redline and the fear of a ban. Lots of people say the steering is a bit pants but it always felt good to me. They also cruise on the motorway nice and relaxed, unlike the GT products.
Nice to have dipped my toe in this forum, it's much more pleasant than the sniping that can take over on the porker section! Here's to a Scotland tour in the summer once enough of us have had Bill Gates microchips injected under the pretense of it being a vaccine. hahahaha
Shame you never got into a 570 in the end, but enjoy the new car Rob. Hopefully you get a few trips in it this year, you should absolutely do Scotland at some point. I have watched this thread in some disbelief.
OP is considering a few cars and settles on one that he knows he'll be happy with. And then lots of people tell him he's wrong.
There is a lot of toxicity in the McLaren area, but it's usually non owners telling us all how st our cars are. It's a real shame to see it in reverse.
Enjoy the car OP - it's all entirely subjective and nobody other than you know what you're happy with.
PH gets worse by the day.

Robj4 you're not incurring the wrath of keyboard warriors, just a gentle bit of fellow petrolhead ribbing!
As you can see many of us have travelled a similar car history to yourself & are simply passing on our experiences & thoughts on the subject at hand.
Nothing wrong with the Boxster its a great allround sports car (over the years I've had 4 different versions) all be it for me ruined by the woeful steering feel of the 981 variant.
I made the leap myself from Boxster GTS 981 to a new 570 Spider nearly 3 years, it's different gravy as it should be at nearly three times the price!
