Am I mad to look at a Mclaren instead of a Porsche 911?

Bit of a sweeping statement there!

I think the 12c looks better every passing day and its very smooth lines are setting it up to be a future classic.

I also think that in a very short period of time the 12c shall command more money than the 5 series range.

There was a mention before that the rear of 540 etc was the new family look for the rear of McLarens, but the newest car the launched ( the GT ) has went back to the simplified rear with straight led lights.

Just because something is 'current' now does not mean it won't look dated in a few years.
Right here is my 2p for what it is worth
I think the 12C is a proper supercar and agin gracefully and will be a future classic for sure . But at the present moment the 570S has come down to a level on the used market that those like me who were looking for a useable high performance car such as an MB Gtr, Audi R8, 911 are now being lured towards the Mclaren as a once unaffordable ( for the who like to buy the car outright rather than pep/lease) car is now within range. This can only be good for the brand and hopefully will help with values.
For me I think after looking at the options I defiantly want either a 570gt/570S as that is what my heart and head says. But a car around £70-£80K , get a warranty , enjoy it as weekend car etc and see how it goes.
All the is left is to try either or both and see what suits me better (if at all ) and then it should be simple to find a car to suit.
Fingers crossed dealers will soon be open in Scotland and I should be able to get a test drive of one or 2 very soon, but no hurry as it is not as if I am short of cars lol

Totally agree with this....... I`ve been going round and round and with what you describe as useage, a nice car to own. I`ll be throwing whatever I get next round the track and the more I look into it, the 570s is going to be a pain to own. Pre trackday inspection and then post trackday inspection and I dont live anywhere near a dealer. Increased service costs and the ceramics are a bit of an unknown quantity ??

I think I have slowly come round to the fact that the heart says 570s but the head says GT3. If not going anywhere near a trackday then the 570s all day long. Just look at them !!!! The GT3 doesnt need extra attention to go on track and is also covered by warranty and only needs a service every 2 years. I`ll personally think that the residuals will be stronger too.

Its a nice decision to have and a test drive may turn all this on its head !! A 991.2GT3 is about £30k more than a decent 570s so you could argue that the £30k you have saved can be put into the extra servicing and running costs on the 570s. Hmmmmm
I know where you are coming form. I think the extra £30k or so invested in a GT3 you will get back compared to the 570S as depreciation on the GT3 will be much slower. I think the 570GT is ideal for me or even the 570S. But lately they seem to selling faster than a 9pk of Andrex in a Pandemic. Almost all the cars I looked at 1 month ago are now sold. I wonder how many will be back on the market once BBL loan repayments, recession, higher taxes etc come into play.
For now I think I will try test driving ALL the cars that tickle my fancy,, settle on 1st choice and try getting it. not bothered if that is this year or next as I am in no hurry.
But you have got me thinking of a 991 GT3. They would be ideal if they had rear seats then it would best of both worlds, So maybe the 991 GTS is the next best thing. God knows tbh and I think. test drive will reveal all , or add more confusion. Only thing in my favour is that I cant see me ever using it on track...... famous last words lol

I went through that, having reached the conclusion I didn’t want ceramics I looked at and bought a 540c, which replaced a 718gt4. Rides better, ballistically fast in comparison, much more of an event, nose lift makes it twice as usable. Mine was 18 months old, 4K miles on clock and 50k under new price. Easy to discount a 540c but just check the power and weight specs relative to something like an f40.
Still trying to get a test drive. But right now car prices going crazy as in upwards. One 570S that I saw through a link on this thread is now £10k more than it was 2 weeks ago.
Oh wellI guess Porsche it is then lol

Jardine group show 53 cars available. I wouldn't start to worry about them running out yet.
I think a lot of people buying a fun toy de to many factors, but summer is always a good time to sell. I think I will keep an eye on cars I like and maybe buy next year as in no hurry . But there will be plenty of cars coming up as I really fear that we are about to hit an economic cliff she in the next 6 months and this will cause hardship to many

I was speaking a large multinational retailers manager and they have told by their dad office to "hold on to your cash as things gong to get very hard for next 2 years "
So I am guessing this could be a temporary blip in the market driven by people buying themselves a sports car with the various monies available to small business . Even my bank manager said they only expect 40% of BIL / BBL loans to ever be repaid
Once the initial buying frenzy dies down I suspect the next couple of years could be tough on the sports car market . But only Time will tell and at present sports cars selling like hot cakes . So if you are selling or thinking of getting out your Mac etc now may be a golden moment

So, getting the thread back on track, what is your intention?
Absolutely no idea TBH.
Went to the Porsche dealer and they have pretty much sold out of all their used 911 stock, only 3 used cars left.
Mclaren 570S / Gt also in short supply now.

I am in no hurry as lease car goes back in Nov, but now sorted out a new daily driver.
The original ideas was to get a 911 as a daily driver (10K miles per year). But now no hurry so will wait and see what comes up .
But the problem is still trying to get a test drive to finally say yes that is the car I want
Presently only driven a 2013 991.1 C4S and that was nice.
Ideally I would like to try
991.2 Carrera 2s
992 Carrera base model
Mclaren 57S any
Mclaren 570Gt any
Then decide what is the best fit.

On the plus side my budget is looking better as Mrs A not out shopping or planning any holidays.
Downside I might have to wait till December January to get the car I want or later, but no hardship tbh

Or maybe people have finally realised the ones on the market will be the best supercars for a while, due to emission legislations.

McLaren moving to a V6 sounds like when Porsche moved all Cayman to Turbo. There’s always room for recovering like they’ve done with GT4, but it’s still a compromised engine with crappy exhaust. But again GT4 is still fine.

I am just scared by where the industry is going, current supercars with little if no contraints from stringent legislation will become well sought after, unless they ban it from the road.

Be prepared for lots of hybrid cars. Well I am definitely not.
I think with cities like London making it expensive for fossil fuel cars to enter it is only time that companies make hybrid versions. But is that a bad thing as a Porsche / McLaren is ideally suited to Hybrid. Maybe get say 50 miles on electric for the town bit and then use the petrol engine for a bit of fun

Hybrid means more weight, heavier car, less fun as well imho as less old school.

Really not for me, unless we’re talking holy trinity.
Long live internal combustion engines. Luckily where I stay ( North East Scotland) I do not need to worry about congestion charging , just a fun car form spree great roads on my doorstep

Purple patch for supercars is definitely 2016 to 2018 IMHO.
Since then it's being going down hill.
Pick of the bunch is probably a McLaren 675 LT spider which at todays prices seems a steal and where my money would be going if I had some spare cash
I now frantically look at prices of 675lt of the web , lol

Not yet
But hopefully now that dealers in Scotland are now open and we are allowed to travel more than 5 miles from home (legacy). I ma hoping to test drive some. But I am not on a hurry as I have a few other cars and still need to build my garage, which was delayed due to Covid.
