New McLaren 650S
Discussion
Lots of sour grapes and rationalisation.
A 12c with more power, better ride, better balance, a more progressive exploitable chassis, more steering feel, a more involving gearchange, and mor dramatic looks .... looks to me like they've taken all the best bits of the 12c and fixed all the bits that were perhaps a little weaker. Proof that underneath the arrogance Mclaren do listen. And that nose, probably the best looking front ive seen on a car for decades. Makes a 458 nose, speciale or otherwise, look like a right bag of spanners.
I dont think this car should be underestimated. I think it will knock the press for 6 when it gets driven and it will win every award under the sun. In fact that is what all the early noises indicate. Yes, its an evolved 12c and doable in a short timescale without the need for masses of retooling and r&d but a complete bullseye for that very reason.

I do like it now- The front bumper design and lights look far better but from every other angle it just looks like a MP4 12C. Is it worth up to £250k for an extra 34 bhp and new front bumper ?
At the end of the day some of the best cars have been evolutions of previous incarnations, 911 being a prime example but you also have Gallardo and Aston Martin Vantage. Sometimes a car just looks right from the outset and doesn't need a radical change for it all to come together
I actually think they have made the latest Vantage V12s less good looking from the original.
The 650S is visually far more appealing to me but my issue is its twice the price of a used MP4 12C and unless they have engineered in a lot more fun, sound and character its not going to be worth the premium.
Be interesting to see how many they sell and at what price, and the knock on effect it has on used MP4 12C which at £130k seem a bargain until you want to offload one

Given a 991GT3 will beat a 12C at the ring I wonder if the forthcoming GT3RS will post a better time than the 650S?
Sportauto supertest mp4-12c 7:28 vs 991 gt3 7:32...?Will not be surprised at all though if the 991 gt3 RS will be faster than the 650S/speciale.

Absolutely true. Just a few weeks ago, I had a v high spec 11 car, 5k on clock, 2 owners. Silver / black, carbon everywhere - very re-saleable. I had to chase 3 official McLaren dealers. One said 'sorry we're not buying at the moment". another nothing at all. a third, nothing, then after a few phone calls 'pestering them' came back with a bid of 25,000 less than the very cheapest on sale in the UK. I get the 5-10k spread thing, but not the 25k spread thing. Fact: McLaren dealers don't buy these cars back. Shame as they really are very good cars, and at 120-130k for low mileage cars a bit of a bargain.
Hi Polar,Could you give a few more specifics please? What was the best bid for the car and what did you end up selling it for? It might give a bit more info to those of us on the retail bidding side.
Thanks

The dealers want their cake and eat it. They bid you low and sell high with a good margin spread they are not really prepared to eat into.Could you give a few more specifics please? I was offered a £4k discount as a cash buyer on a £150k car, I think you know what the outcome was

And have you seen the HUGE number of new 991 Turbos littering the classifieds? Seems every OPC has a couple of them knocking around looking for a home.
There was a time when I thought a 991 GT3 may just be a sound idea. Oh, hang on...
For all the doom mongering going on, I think these cars are all going to be fine provided you buy well.
With a 650S/ Hurracan / 458 replacement all going to cost £220-250k when they get going, I believe that a 100-120k Mclaren 12c, or a Gallardo limited edition for example, will look like pretty good value. If the economy is firm, I think these cars will firm up at these levels.
But I may be talking cobblers..

Agree
There must come a point when they are just too much car for the money - at 50% off the new list price of £250k seems to make sense. I sold a 2008 R8 for £48k two years ago, and its still worth that today...

Why would they favour a cash buyer when they can bank the commission from a financed purchase instead?
They would versus a part exchange. Even with finance you would need a sizeable deposit. £4k discount is nothing given the margins they have up their sleeves. Its almost daylight robbery to change a car these days. Better saving up, biding your time and buying a keepertoppstuff said:

I agree but some accuse me of being biased after my recent Gallardo Performante purchase. Coupled with the 991 GT3 fiasco there are going to be quite a few people in the market this summer. And have you seen the HUGE number of new 991 Turbos littering the classifieds?
