After searching for a MP4-12C for a long time I had the opportunity to drive a 570s. Yes, it a different car, but I had read and heard so many warnings on the MP4-12C, electric gremlins, engine, gearbox, faulty - whatever and so on.

So, question of the day. Cars and driving experience is different, but is it worth the difference, say some 30K€ to have a better car, 570s that not has as many reports on problems?

Or, will the Mp4-12C become a Icon in the future? 570s design feels somehow never...

I to was interested in jumping out of my continuous Porsche ownership in to an MP4 12C but am worried about potential high ownership costs. I’ve found running Porsche’s has been very reasonable.

For me the looks are a personal preference. I originally went to look at the 12C but was won over by the 540/570. 30k for the better car, probably an unfair comparison, its 30k for the newer car IMO.

I fancied a Mclaren and test drove a 540c, 570 GT and 12c....

I bought the 12c.

A few months a go I got a 570 GT for the day. I took it to Fort William and back. The drive confirmed I choose the correct car for me.

Looks are personal choice but I like the longer wheelbase and F1 silhouette of the 12C. Recently I have started thinking the P1 & 570 cars look too fussy. The longer wheelbase and wider tyres make the car more stable. The air brake is really cool.

Recently I was contacted by my dealer regarding the 600LT. I'm sure it will be amazing but I could not justify £100K+ over the 12c because the 12c has 600BHP, a short sport exhaust and the suspension will be better suited to the roads I drive on. It shows how highly I regard the 12c.

Oh and they are rare cars.

The wheel base on the 570 and 12c is exactly the same, 2670mm. They are after all based on the same basic carbon fibre monocell.

Its a phenominal piece of kit for the money and the performance is ridiculous.

What people have to remember is that it still has running costs of a £250k car though.
Some will stretch their budget to get in such an awesome car but then expect to run it on a shoestring.

Has anyone mentioned the billionaire doors yet !

I did not know that. I thought the 570 was shorter and wider. The carbon fibre chases stops behind the rear seats and the rest of the engine & gearbox are attached to a rear subframe. I am surprised the wheelbases are exactly the same.

I have had a 12c for 2 years after 10 or so 911's and a few other bits.

The 12c has never cost me anything to maintain outside of the service and warranty and I have had suspension parts covered by warranty as well as door latches, coolant leak, water pump, horn and a brake caliper. The warranty is expensive but does offer peace of mind.

To give one example for comparison, I had a GT2 with warranty. Guildford OPC managed to find many things outside of warranty to charge me for. Rear suspension struts leaking, exhaust heat shields, front radiators and ceramic disks which all added up to thousands.

To me its a different proposition but one that I have enjoyed and I feel like it has been good value for the miles I have covered.

I have owned my 12c for 12 months and it has been more rialible than any Porsche I have owned. The only thing I needed was a Iris 2 reboot. Second most reliable car was my Aston DB9. The Aston even fixed itself lol.

I finally had a test drive a few days ago in a 570GT. WOW!

The acceleration alone was like nothing I've experienced before. It stops quickly too!
For some reason I was expecting it to be noisy and a little uncomfortable so the fact that it was the exact opposite was a little strange to begin with.
I'm used to cars where you get the feeling you're doing 130mph when you're only doing 90, with this it's the other way round.
It seemed very happy to do crawl along at low speeds in traffic too.
I guess you all know this though!

I think I want one but might have to have another drive first smile

Be prepared for a few silly questions over the coming days/weeks.
With a car which still has the remains of the McLaren warranty what are the benefits of buying from an approved dealer instead of an indy ?
Should the number of owners be of any concern ? The car I drove had 3 previous and was a 17 plate.
Is it possible to find details of any warranty work done ?

Save your self £10k+ and buy a private car (with warranty) but get an inspection or better still buy from https://www.alastairbols.com

McLaren approved should come with 12 months warranty (warranty is about £4k....so £340 a month - give or take)
